Derrick, Good for you for coming out. I had come out in high school; yet I was rushed by every frat on campus. The one I was most worried about turned out to be the most accepting. SAE. So I pledged them. So nice some of the national frats are so much more liberal today. From the looks of you and your articulation expressing yourself, you are a great example inspiration for other gay guys to come out. Thank you. We didn't have a TKE Chapter on our campus.
I came across your video late. You seem to have "it all together". Very nice looking, articulate, and well educated. Glad your frat life was so rewarding. We definitely need more people such as you speaking up and coming out to the rest of the world. I know people would be staggered if they knew how many of us were GLBT. Probably many GLBT people would be too. Thank you for your video.
You will find that it is a lot easier to come out in the college environment than it is to in the workplace. I myself am out to my family and to my close friends, but I am not out at work (I work in the corporate world, professional). I work for a company that is very family-oriented, and has a nearly non-existant GLBT network. We're talking at least Fortune 100... You will find that coming out is something you will have to do over and over again for the rest of your life.
Derrick, thanks for sharing this! I never had the guts to come 100% out when I was in my fraternity. Looking back now I can there really was no big deal.
What an awesome video. I went to one of the gayest universities in the world (Pepperdine University) and hardly ANYONE has the same courage you had! Congrats, you have earned my respect!
BRAVO. If you're watching, wondering if you should come out... do it. If your family and friends really love you, they will not care whom you love. The more we come out, the more people will understand we are their sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, parents, friends, co-workers, and neighbors.
You know... thank you for charing this. I know it's hard, for me was even harder but I know someday we will not be afraid of telling the others about this because it doesn't change our personality or the quality of the person... It's been amazing hearing this, it reminds me when I told my friends, all of them are straight, and they accpet me, that is wonderful!!!! Thank you for this! Maybe we'll never meet each other, but have a nice life! ;)
Thank you everyone for all your support. Every now and again I remeber to check the comments on this video and it warms my heart to hear all the nice things you have to say. (I also just ignore all the mean things) I hope that everyone can find the home and group of friends I have in my fraternity. I'm an alum now, in the real world and I miss my brothers a ton. Lots of love and respect to everyone who took the time to watch and comment.
I was out my senior year, but by that time, I had moved out of the house and really had a different circle of friends. I still did chapter dinners, etc, but it was different. Anyway, there was a big bar that everybody went to - it was a gay bar mainly, but it had a big crossover appeal. One saturday night , I was there with my boyfriend and was dancing with a group of friends and I was really getting into it. I then did a turn away from my friends ...
and was essentially facing the edge of the dance floor and there was six of my frat brothers and their dates -all of whom I knew. I was standing there facing all of them and just sorta waved-they turned and left . I wasn't looking forward to Monday night chapter dinner, but it was OK, sorta. Some of the brothers spoke to me and some didn't , but I was pretty much moving away from the frat anyway. The guys that were my friends remained and those that weren't apparently weren't from the beginning.
most frats are supper cool with gay bros! lol at my college at least i know of two that have gay members and guys from other frats have friends that are gay and there is no problem! I think is all about respect! as days go by i come to find out that so many people are very accepting, EVEN my bro who recently turned 14 has no problems with homosexuality and that made me feel happy cuz he will defend me from the bullies!!!! literally ! -well he doesnt know about me yet though!
Good for you man. I'm out to my family and friends, but I'm not sure if I'd have the confidence to come out to hundreds of straight guys at the same time. Kudos!
Great coming out story! Let me play devil's advocate-Do you think the acceptance from most of your frat brothers and friends could be because you do not seem like the stereotypical "gay guy?" It seems within the gay community, there are so many different degrees of gayness, that you appear to be more masculine and could quite possibly pass for straight. Whereas, someone who might wear their sexual orientation on their sleeve, may perhaps have a much more difficult time coming out.
MY apologies for the late response. But honestly, from what I have found, my specific chapter is accepting of all men as long as they are men of personal worth and character. We have a very wide range of brothers. I can say honestly that we have what most would consideras stereotypically gay brothers and they are just as much a welcome part of our brotherhood than any other brother of personal worth and character.

Im just wondering do the fraternity helps out the community or they just drinks and do nasty x-rated activities in front of peoples because I be hearing from peoples.
Coming out is hard, let alone when you're in a fraternity. I've just started the process of coming out to my chapter with pretty positive reactions. Anyway, good luck and grats.
"I look into the window of my mind Reflections of the fears I've left behind I step out of the ordinary I can feel my soul ascending I am on my way, Can't stop me now And you can do the same What have you done today to make you feel proud? It's never too late to try You could be so many people If you make that break for freedom" (PROUD by Heather Small) Thanks for sharing
Hey, thanks for your video man. It's real brave of you. We are actually the same age, and I'm also a senior at my University (in SA). So I think we have a lot in common there.. I'd like to get in touch some how? Just to chat. If you're up for it (and sorry if I sound like a stalker, not my intention)?
I am gay and in a fraternity ... I have yet to come out and don't plan on it my senior year. Though my brothers would support me (we had a openly gay brother 2 years ago), the school is far too homophobic for me to want to deal with it ... at least along with dealing with my parents....
damn you are hot!!!!! Besides that... I admire your strength. I want to come out to my sis... but I'm kinda afraid..... But congratulations on your coming out to your friends.
"Gay" is such a dainty, limp-wristed word. And it doesn't help to say that people who are not gay are "straight," which implies that gays are "bent," i.e., imperfect and abnormal. And "camp," "queer," "queen": who came up with these airy-fairy terms? Liberace?
No wonder it's so hard for dudes to come out!
What about updating the effeminate sounding "gay" with a word that echoes strength, confidence and bravery? Like, say, "Jedi"?
"Mom, Dad... I'm... a Jedi": yeah, way more accepting.

You have to keep coming out, over and over in different places. It's like you're never fully out of the closet. There's aways going to be people who don't know.

Pretty much everyone in this town are huge homophobes, and I hate it.
Everywhere I go, there is someone yelling, "Whoever talks next is gay", like it is something bad.
