  • i would wait for ncstae to come on tv in the 70s to see him play ,

  • @a6foot6 freshmen could not play varsity but the freshman team went 15-1 his freshman year. Trust me I met him last night

  • DT did jump center some I believe....my memory is foggy.

  • That background commentary was Jim Thacker, he and Billy Packer did all the ACC games at that time. They were the best broadcast team in college basketball ever. Nick Pond was the lead sports reporter at WRAL-TV.

    Tommy B. jumped center...not DT.

  • skywalker was 6'4" and burleson was 7'4". You know who took the tip-off for the team? Thompson

  • When David T falls on his head at 8:46.....i saw Jerome Kersey fall just like that at the Forum vs The Lakers and just like David T Jerome was just fine. It helps to be a world class athlete.

  • the voice of the commentary is Wally Ausley (the voice of the wolfpack )

  • who was the commentary reporter ,was his name nick pond. i loved his reporting

  • This is a great video! I feel like it is so hard today to find footage of older players. If anyone knows of any other similar videos of other ACC basketball greats I would love to see them! Also, David Thompson is in my opinion the greatest of all time, and IS the greatest player to come out of the ACC. I must admitt, I am also a Len Bias fan... it's awesome to see people that share my opinion. I would love to see more videos like this one.

  • Len Bias was a great player but u have to remember those teams he played on were medeocre at best. I think they were at the bottom of the ACC. They barely won half their games. The NCAA only allowed 32 teams in the tournament when that 72 team played. The 1st team Thompson played on was undefeated and didn't go to the tourney. They were on probation. They could've easily won 2 national championships. Len Bias was great but he was no David Thompson.

  • Sweet! I've always wanted to see that play where David Thompson jumped over someone's shoulders, and the bottom of his feet looked to be about 4 feet in the air when he did it. And this 4 part video is pretty good stuff, I love it.

  • david thompson was sick his first 6 years in the pro's too...... his rookie year he almost led denver to the championship but htey lost to dr j and the nets in 6 but yea david was nasty best college player ever. he was an unreal talent.

  • David Thompson was voted the greatest ACC player all time acouple years ago by the Charlotte paper. MJ was not that good in college and it's such bullshit people put him as the best acc player. ESPN and NBC have done those top 20 college players all time thing and MJ is always a head of DT and ESPN didn't even have him on their list which is pure bullshit.

  • This is an fantastic find.

  • I have to say the late Len Bias was the best player for the ACC. Michael Jordan was good in 1984 but his two years before that, he was more of a shadow player. David Thompson is the probably the best in history but I have to say that Len Bias possed some post up moves as well as David Thompson power.

  • i grew in north carolina, so i know all about the unc four corners offense. actually, dean smith had used that offense long before phil ford came to unc. however, phil ford's handle made it the weapon it was because there was not shot clock during that time. the other unc guards before phil ford coudldn't handle like him.

  • i was living in southern pines, n.c. in 1974. i was 16 years old. i've never seen these videos. absolutely fantastic!!! i'm 48 now. i'm reliving my childhood.

  • DT is the greatest ACC player.

  • No doubt! there was a poll by writers from the ACC several years ago, and they voted Michael Jordan the greatest ACC player. Those writers are ignorant. As Sports Illustrated stated several years ago, "no player from the ACC, not even Michael Jordan, was a better player in the ACC". That sums it up perfectly!

  • In my opinion,Tarhill,All Amer and Wooden award winner Phil Ford is the second greatest player to play in the ACC. Even had the bread and butter offensive play named after him. Any Youtube viewers recall the "Ford Corners"?

  • Yea, I remember Phil Ford. As a Wolfpack fan growing up in the 70s, I hated Phil Ford, Dean Smith and everything UNC! Duke's b-ball program sucked during that time. So they were never a factor. Today, I don't hate UNC so much. but I definately hate Duke! Funny how time changes. LOL

  • Dean Smith did a great service to college basketball with the four corners because it ruined games in which it was used. It was legal, but showed lack of sportsmanship. It said, we're ahead and we're taking the ball and going home rather than give you a chance to play s that we can see if we're better for 40 minutes. I was at the Marquette game when Smith, with Phil Ford, went into the 4 corners with a 2 or 3 point lead and probably cost them the game and the national championship.

  • anna please! stop! the 4 corners was great for basketball.

  • Anna, I couldn't agree with you more about Dean Smith's "four corners". Not only was it poor sportsmanship, it was very boring to watch. It was like UNC was declaring the game over before time went out, so they would be assured the win. Very poor sportsmanship!

  • Phil was such a talented ball handler, that Dean Smith would allow Phil to Globetrotter dribble upt to three to five minutes until he either penetrated for a easy layup or an easy dish. . Some games this scheme was 100% of the offense. No Tarhill has ever had this type of freedom or allowed this type of domination. And 1 players need to check out some vintage Phil Ford film. Note, his handle was 100% legal. Dean Smith, can you place some vintage Phil Ford film on Youtube.
