You do realize that you can VERY easily do this to your own music right? It just phases the center channel out of the audio by offsetting it. Any vocal remover will do this.
One of the main downsides is that it makes it mono. Because reverb is added to almost all vocals you can usually still hear them to varying degrees. Sometimes it's barely noticible, sometimes it's impossible to get it right. The thing I love about it though is that usually you end up with JUST
being able to hear the backup vocal like here. The first time I ever did this (in like 1998) I forgot to turn it off. My friend then really wanted to hear Sisqo's (?? spelling) song "The Thong Song." It's still an awesome song to hear because all you end up hearing are the backup vocals which sound really weird.
You don't need to use an audio editing program to do this either. You can get plugins for things like WinAmp that do it on the fly.
