I like Sifu Mazza but I don't know what to think about this video. I'm not a Wing Chun guy but I thought that Chi Sao was a sensitivity trainer and not the starting position to a fight. I have met Sifu Mazza many times. He is very fast and strong, but I thought that wasn't the point of the drill.
Big arms + dominant posture whole time does not = win. He's like a arm wrestler that curls his wrist or starts pushing before the signal. His left hand is already gripping and tense while they're pushing hands...
Look at 1:20 to 1:23 Mazza gets the trap. Nice! I like that he's aggressive and controlled. He def has the upper hand. Asian cat crossed his arms - not a good idea!
Some of you jokers don't know crap about chi sao cause you never fight. You don't have to always stick. But if that's the way you're taught too bad. Anyone with any common sense can see who dominated there.
@phillykf I agree and disagree with you. I agree that Kung Fu practictioners need real world application and experience to improve their technique, Wing Chun is one of those martial arts that's perfect for the real world. But I disagree with how Sifu Mazza presented himself. As a Master Sifu Mazza should know better and have nothing to prove. The biggest part of all martial arts is to know humility and restraint. In the real world as you say arrogance can lead to a bullet behind the ear.
@Tinhamodic Some of the Fatshan WC people dominated some Americans that were there before. So they were arrogant with this group. Keith Mazza just showed one of the top WC guys there that you don't have to be Chinese to be good at WC. You should've directed your humility and restraint remark to those arrogant Fatshan people. Real world . . lol What do you know about the real world that others don't know?? I'm from the hood and a combat Vet.
@phillykf My remark applies to all who practice martial arts regardless of style. If the Fatshaners were guilty of this then they should know better also. Real world? I've had my share of scrapes. I'm actually grateful where I don't have to live in an environment where I have to keep looking behind me. But as a martial artist one must always be vigilant and prepared. I commend your veteran status and your fortune to return whole of mind and body (at least I hope so)
@Mick0722MX There is no doubt Sifu Mazza was confident, a testimony to his skill, but whether he was arrogant is only a matter of opinion. I'm talking about control here. If we had a friendly match of chi sao, you don't know me, I don't know you and I "Punched" you in the face when I know merely touching your face would show that you were open. I would be demonstrating poor control and judgement. Chi sao is not about knocking each others teeth out, at least not the way I was taught.
@Tinhamodic He wasn't trying to prove anything. I was there, I video taped this and other segments. Perhaps I'm misunderstanding here; but the whole thing was a friendly exchange and like any '2' brothers you are going to get a bit competitive and both of them showed skills and they also showed camaraderie. For the Fatshan guys and the USA guys they gained perhaps a new respect for one another. After all was done, everyone became like one big family.
Chi Sao is not fighting but a training tool to find superior postions by reflex and proper angles/positions. In my personal opinion, the other guy seems to have understood the purpose of Chi Sao better than Mazza, and also performs better most of the time.
Mazza is doing chi sao in the first sequence of movements, after that he's mostly trying to get back at the other guy by breaking stick after having been hit because of poor positioning. At 1:37 he's hit with a palmstrike. He then slaps from outside and breaks stick(?) At 2:09 the guy reaches his throat before he reacts. At 2:15 the guy lands a very nice palmstrike, Mazza again breaks stick and starts boxing/wrestling to get back at the other guy. Unimpressive.
@OliverLarson I watched this over and over at 1:37 that palm strike is deflected and never touches Mazza. At 2:09 his "reach for the throat" never gets to mazza, his arm is completely extended and Mazza has control of his elbow just freeze frame and look. At 2:15 he does lands a nice palm strike but before the wrestling ever occurs he is overwhelmed by Mazzas counters. I dont think you know what your looking at.
@coxscorner ..'has control of his elbow...' I say in a real fight the other guy would have had control of his throat if he'd pushed further, one must stop such a move sooner than Mazza did. And exactly how is the palm strike at 1:37 deflected? Freeze at 1:37, the guy's palm is at Mazza's chest and neither of Mazza's hands is even near it. Mazza's 'counters' that you refer to are mostly him breaking stick to get even, not chi sau. And then the wrestling starts. I know exactly what I'm looking at.
@OliverLarson if he had pushed further. Thats like saying a boxer would have landed a jab if he reached further, never mind the fact it didnt land. At 1:37 I see something completely different. I froze it at 1:36 and it looks just short and Mazza's left hand is on his opponent right elbow. Opinions vary.
@coxscorner The point I was trying to make about the throat grab was that Mazza probably could not have stopped it if it had been a real fight. I believe the other guy could have reached his throat, as IMO Mazza's defense wasn't enough. In chi sau, a lot of times one may simply demonstrate that there's an opening (especially if the other guy's throat is involved). About the palm, yes I guess opions vary.
If the Chinese guy's been cocky, he deserved a lesson. If he's a nice guy, I'd probably won't do anything and make him lose face. Anyhow, it is clear that Sifu Keith wants to stop and avoid an escalation and the Chinese guy wants to continue.
On top of that, I noticed that actually Sifu Keith was already ready to end the sparring by giving him a friendly slap on the side but the dude got it the wrong way and started kicking and fighting. That was quite embarrassing to watch....
Phillykf, the dude did look quite cocky. Despite his "smile", he's probably boiling with rage underneath. XD I love Wing Chun. I'm a Wing Chun practitioner myself but I am under the lineage of Yip Kin.
