@DavidSoda The director of the opening ceremony in Barcelona was also the director of the ceremonies in Sydney. It was Ric Birch. For me it was and is the opening ceremony of the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, the BEST.
The best opening ceremony of the Olympic Winter Games was in Vancouver.
Sydney and Vancouver had the same producer and artistic director David Atkins. David Atkins is the best. I hope he will still make some spectacular ceremonies.
@DavidSoda Sydney was way better!! With accuracy Barcelona was better with that arrow shot but Sydney was way better visually!!! Absolutely stunning.......land Down Under is awesome!!!
Still makes me cring all these years latter .I was in Vancouver when there torch malfunctioned and you could hear there harts breaking , funny thing was that it was Aussies in Canada responsible that fuck up too
After watching the opening ceremony of the 2000 games, I am now convinced that it is one of the best opening ceremonies ever! I hope London would do a better job next year.
the fact that Sydney got the 2000 millenium games is one of the greatest moments in Australian history and the opening ceremony truely displayed this. the greatest opening ceremony for the greatest games in history. Years from now, people will still remember the Sydney 2000 olympics as the greatest of all time.
it wasnt supposed to be still i talked to the guy who owned the company that took part in making it and there was a few scary seconds when the bloody thing didnt move lol but in a weird way it didnt lessen the grand nature of the occassion.
@nacht98 No, it was supposed to ascend upwards almost immediately. A glitch in the system effectively prevent it from happening immediately, once they found out what was wrong, they rebooted the software system and reloaded the program. Other sources state that it wasn't tested with the flame, so the software didn't account for the additional weight, once enough fuel was burned, then it ascended upwards.
@nacht98 No, it stopped on its own, and apparently no-one breathed in the control room until it moved again! By the time the main burner took over, they had less than a minute of gas remaining! Any rumour that it hadn't been tested with the flame is crap btw - they tested it THREE TIMES with no glitch!
I hope that London 2012 follows the example of crown participation and the ATMOSPHERE put out by these wonderful games. Athens were....ok and Beijing was practically comatose. Don't get me wrong, the action on the track at 04 and 08 was amazing, but how the crowd reacted in Sydney, for me, still makes this the greatest games ever. I just hope that my home games in London can match that! :)
I get that it's celebrating 100 years of Women in the Olympics but they missed out on some amazing Australian Male athletes carrying the torch in the stadium.
@kelankw2 I to not remember ever to have inflammation of the Olympic torch as moved and Aroused so much emotion. When I first watched it, cried when Cathy entered the stairs. I guess I never lighting a candle is not eclipsed by the opening ceremony of the rest .... I have the impression that in Sydney it happened.
cathy freeman makes me so proud to be aussie <3

I think Barcelona was better, because of their simplicity and meaning but I don't know they're so close.
But Barcelona's slogan was the best of all times, Friends Forever!
