Loved watching this... too bad the audio is so bad on this. I always wished they would have created another 'live' record/video release from the height of Schlitt's era with them- along about Beyond Belief or so. Something along the lines of Captured... but with Schlitt. Good to watch this, though.
I saw Petra on their very first tour for their self-titled album in a very small church venue and followed them all the way through their career. A few years later I worked at a Christian radio station that brought them into town for three concerts and got to meet them and talk with them. They are truly in my opinion the best Christian rock musicians of all time.
Thanks for sharing! Too bad the audio isn't a little clearer, but I 'spose it's better than nothing!
I've got the Not of This World and Petra Praise albums; anybody got suggestions for other ones I should get? (I love Petra, but I don't know as much about them as I would like)
At the last concert I attended John said he had been with a secular rock group before he was saved. Yet he never said what group it was. He had stayed high for six straight months and his wife took him to visit her minister. when the minister asked John if he wanted to be saved John was so burned out all he could do was just nod his head. When he got saved God instantly cleaned him out and he was totally straight and in his right mind when he left the minister's office.
Man, I can still remember my first Petra concert, for THIS tour. I've always been a huge Journey/Steve Perry fan, and I always thought John was the Christian Steve Perry!! The way he dressed, moved, and his vocals...amazing, truly amazing to this day!
Until 1986 I was a hardened atheist...after becoming a born-again Christian in the summer of that year, Petra (pet-ruh not peet-ruh) was the very first Christian rock band I came across. I got to see them perform in Montana during their "Beyond Belief" tour. It was awesome!!!
I was in my late 30s at the time & my sister, 15 years older than I, was with me & it was sooo cool to see her rockin' out to this terrific band! =)
I like all of their albums, including their debut which wasn't a hit at all for them - Petra - but then after 30+ some odd years they needed a break too. I agree, no Christian rock band can give the same as Petra did. As long as we stay in His Spirit we can do far exceedingly more than our predecessors.
This band were a true blessing. Too bad that they aren't playing any more, since I don't think we ever will get to hear anything like them again. :-/ But well they left us with alot of good albums so they will allways be playing. If not live so atleast in my sterio and in my heart :-)
I have been a fan of Petra since as far back as I can remember. This Means War is, in my opinion, the BEST album they put out. My mother and I "screech" to Petra (I CAN sing...just not rock, no matter how hard I try) often. This is the album we put in. I may be a product of the 70s, but I'm a child of the 80s and love the 80s rock!
This Album was my second Petra Album. (Fired Up was my first.) And I love this music, the music (Equally John and Greg, and Bob (from the first CD)) helped bring many (myself included) to GOD.
"I consider them equal in talent, just not similar in style. Both are world class singers that most people don't know about and that is a shame." -Carol, I couldn't agree more!
Not really. Both are awesome, but being a singer myself in a band that covered songs from both eras of Petra, Schlitt is a better overall singer. That said, no on could hit a high falsetto like Volz -- the notes at the end of Adoni require being neutered to hit. And the note held at the end of Godpleaser is the longest pure note I've ever heard. Volz had better ballad dynamics -- listen to Road to Zion -- just perfect. But Volz could never dream of singing All the King's Horses.
This is fantastic! I wish I could have seen this song live. It's been a very important song in my walk as a Christian. I've remembered it when times have been dark or tough. God bless these guys! I think this was not long after John's conversion.
BTW, the great 70's rock vocalists are well-represented in John. The great rock of the early 70's lived on through the dark post-80's in John Schlitt.
Bob hartman is one of the best guitar players to never get any credit, John Schlitt is hands down the best vocalist ever, Ronnie cates has one of the heaviest Bass sound I've ever heard, John Lawry is an astonishing Keyboard player, Louie weaver is the only drummer perta should have ever had, one of my early influences.
I love Petra!!! I remember listening to the This means War "TAPE"(of course ive upgraded it to the CD) when I was a teenager I am now 35 years old. It was a sad day when they retired but there music and ministry will live on forever!!
there will never in the history of christian music be a band that can penetrate the gospel into so many lives, as well as bring the gospel alive the way Petra has. i was converted by the Spirit through the way Petra delivered the gospel alive in my life.
Petra rocks! They're my most fave band until now. From their music and to their message, very powerful! Compromising has no place in their songs. They have awesome titles of the song and they have qoutes from the bible. Nice to watch this vdio, no way we had a chance to watch their vdios those time there in Philippines. It's worth a view. More power to Petra!
The keyboards and drums seem to drown out everything else. I can barely hear Bob's guitar and Ronnie's bass is completely inaudible. Good video, though. I'm glad to see it. Looks like it was around 1988. Thank you for posting it. I like the song "Second Wind". I'd like to see that, too. Did you already put it up?
we need to heed the message to this song more and more in the days ahead.
we need revival in this country and around the world desperately!

I think they didn't have a best album, although Beyond Belief and Wake Up Call would be the two I would chose.
