You won't get any argument from me, Jack - I don't own that disc and never have, but at least it was different. Probably a better comparison would've been Frank Sinatra's completely different - and equally brilliant - big band and ballad arrangements of a song like "Night And Day"
A pointless exercise - To compare, Eric Clapton's acoustic remake of 18 years ago offered the listener an opportunity to hear a familiar tune in a new and different light. Thankfully these two elected not to address the piano part at the end -
sexy sax. I didn't realize how much BW contributed to D&D's until i started viewing youtube. I wish that band could have lasted a bit longer. BW's voice seems to be holding out a bit better than EC's. nice post...
Wow this is definitely different than Clapton's version. The contrast between the slow verse and the fast chorus is really creative and gives good dynamic to the song. They really bring a new mood to the song and even though I like Clapton's version better because I am accustomed this new approach to the song is quite good as well. I love the way they have maintained the old riff in the chorus just to indicate that it IS Layla.
I'm fortunate enough to have the pleasure of being able to attend Bobby and CoCo's gigs at The Saxon Pub every Sunday night. They end their set with "Layla" and it never fails to give me goosebumps like it did the very first time I heard it when I was a teenager. "Layla" is and always will be my most favorite song ever. =^..^=
Texastigress, I am also fortunate enough to have have seen on several occasions Bobby and Coco at the Saxon Pub in Austin, Texas. I have probably seen you there! :-)
Heard Bobby and Coco be interviewed by KGSR Austin Tx DJ Jody Feb 14. They are great people and they have been blessed to have been with other great artists throughout their lives. I saw the Allman Bros. live in Miami when I was a teen for free, prior to Duane going to UK to record with E.C., Bobby and the rest. But now I will be able to see Bobby and Coco live in Austin, as they are local folks now. Awesome! The album sounds great and the Layla version is superb. :)
All I got to say.........is Eric Clapton should never have let this guy get away. Just don't understand why I have had to listen to all of his lame keyboard players for the last 30 years.....
Love it! Awesome Job Bobby!!

I would've liked to have heard them do their interpretation of the end of the song - a shame they didn't play it.
But nice track!

Fantastic version. I wanted to hear more from
Bobby Whitlock back in 1970. I've got some
searching to do.

This is an awesome version of the song! The sax work by Coco is outstanding and the vocals, well it just doesn't get any better than Bobby!

True genius - melody and harmony - looks like the guy from Donald Cammell's 'White of the Eye!'-
wish I could be him!!!!
