Pretty good for live at a "Barnes & Noble" bookstore. For me the voice and interpretation still come through, even with the muffled acoustics of this venue. Joanny, I love your music.
Uhmm no not impressed at all. Some kind of smokey club feel to her voice. She does not set herself apart enough to distinguish who she is. If iIheard her on the the radio wouldn't be able to tell you who she is. Just my view.
Then you haven't actually bothered to listen to her, anyone who makes an uniformed opinion based on one song...just likes to see there lacking opinions in print. ; )
@Asuigeneris1 I have heard some of here other songs. They sound pretty dam good, But not this one in particular. I mean she has not taken it away from the original artist and made it her own. Just the actual message I was trying to convey.
Just reading some of the posts left and I noticed our friend jonWayn70 wasn't to impressed. Let's remember, she's in the middle of a book store, not much of a venue for quality of sound.

Lets just Kiss and say GOODBYE... record it ,you own it, YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT with the , FUNK BROTHERS and singing what becomes of a broken heartache,JOAN try some ol' negro spirituals.... Mahalia's got a few that just might be the perfect fit... Youve found your rhythm, .... you both share the out of body ,while we hear you , sometimes its: UNBELIEVABLE,,, sometimes,,.. whoa,,,,sometimes OMG. but its always the same song that elicites those emotions from me,...U FOUND UR NICHE
All you have to do is look at Joan Osborne performing a song to see the passion and conviction she puts into it. Also, her voice just burrows its way into your head and you can't get it out....ever!
the thing about joan osborne is she does so many covers, that it always draws comparisons to the original version.
she can sing, for sure. but most of the time she comes up short. and this song really proves my point. there is just nothing behind that very nice voice.
@mikehouston1 Believe it or not PINK does a fantastic job singing Janis Joplin music...In saying that, if a real movie was ever made about Joplins life I would love to see OSBORNE play her!

In some ways it is a damming indictment of how far black music has fallen when we had real soul singers and we now have crappy and horrible R&B and Rep music. Thank god for class like Joan who brings the soul back to all our lives. This is truly blinding stuff and shows that we can all have soul in our lives and so respect and love to you all.
It's been a long, long time since I've heard a singer I enjoy listening to as much as I do Joan Osborne, and I've heard a lot of singers. I love the soul she puts into a song. Where so many other singers are just singing notes, Joan tells a story every time she sings and really puts herself into her music. Where too many singers are just poseurs, she's the real deal.
I have the Funk Bros DVD featuring her and I never get tired of watching Joan and the FB sharing the love.
This reminds me why I've spent the last fifteen years wondering how such an amazing performer didn't become the biggest thing on planet earth for at least five or ten years.
Moments like this are PRICELESS. Reminds me of a Saturday afternoon in Fort Lauderdale when I walked into a Borders store just in time to hear C. Lauper live doing an acoustic version of Time After Time. These are memories that can't be taken away...

This is okay, but you really need to hear her do "What Becomes of the Broken Hearted" on the Funk Brothers Motown DVD. It's fantastic.

Poor Jimmy Webb would be disappointed to hear his great lyrics and music treated so lifelessly by Joan Osborne.

...but an artist can't be blamed for someone's crappy live recording really.
Besides, covers are always hit or miss...sometimes justice can be done, other times not.
...but on a whole Osborne is an incredible artist.
I would agree though, that in this recording...it isn't something spectacular taking place.

Great to look at , but she does no justice to this song at all. Well, not after knowing Gladys Knight's version (original)

oh Lordy, another fantastic Joan performance. I would hang around bookstores a lot more if more of them had Joan playing a set.
