It's hilarious to me, a guy who's read the first two novels and anthologies, when someone says THIS Holmes isn't like the books. They're obviously comparing it not to the books, but to those God-Awful Basil Rathbone movies THAT DIDN'T EVEN GET THE PERIOD RIGHT AND MADE WATSON A JACKASS. Rather, a lot of what's glossed over in the stories (by a too-kind Watson) is studied more in-depth here (Holmes substance abuse, for example; you can tell in one scene he's been shooting coke).

If anything it's not the action (Holmes has seen plenty of action; maybe not Hollywood-styled) but his characterization. He's a pretty stern character, and in this movie, he's laid-back, almost giving off a play-boy vibe

I can tell that Kenneth Turan never read the Conan Doyles books. The books had all this action stuff in them. I especially love Holmes wild hallucinations in The Devils Foot.

went to see this at 1am it was the only film on... really was impressed with robert downey jr putting on the accent...could never have noticed ...amazing acting

..go in with a bottle of vodka,,,take a shot every time someone says the words 'bloody, 'peculiar' 'most' and also everytime someone smokes a pipe or grunts, or rabid animals

I thought the movie was great, my favorite part being Holmes' casual and flawless summation of everything that Blackwood had done, completely pissing on all his "supernatural" shit. The music is also one of my favorite parts, "the Rocky Road to Dublin" was a great choice of song.

Oh, and Watson suddenly being really sexy doesn't hurt either :)

Sherlock Holmes is a very nice film.

Who see this film must understand that this isn't the "real" sherlock holmes, that is in conan doyle's stories but this film show a modern reinterpretation of the character, underlining some aspects of the real sherlock.

I've watched the movie. it's great and out of my expectation. No surprise that Robert got the award of best actor for his work here. Just one thing, is it me or the movie somehow tried to suggest that there's a gay relationship between Holmes & Watson? I kinda getting the message between the lines...

Did anyone else notice weird marks and letters appearing on or around the characters during certain shots in the movie? The real question is, have you read any of the sherlock holmes stories? If you have, you'd understand that this isn't suppose to be an action movie. In fact, the most action it should have is a bit of fist fighting since holmes was a boxer.

I really liked downey as holmes, loved the accent, but i really didn't like the plot. it gave me fear through the whole movie because it revolved around satanism and shit. it really could be simple and have a murder case or some shit. enjoyed the action and the talk. thats what sherlock holmes is all about dumbshits.

Single-handedly one of the best movies I've ever seen. The story was great, and the fight scenes which followed the slow-mo explanation of how Holmes picked out every move he was going to do and what the results of his blows where was very good and something I've never seen in a movie before. Because they're comparing it to the original Sherlock Holmes, where he wasn't an "action hero". However, they're also being a little ridiculous in that sense because this is indeed the 21th century where we know, unfortunately, nobody can go see a film where there aren't explosions every second scene. Sorry, Kenneth. I thought the film was plenty transcendent. As a Sherlock Holmes fan and an RD Jr fan, I was delighted with every moment. The cinematography and art direction are splendid, the plot and subplots are loads of fun. The characterizations of Holmes, Watson, Mary, Irene, and the police were fantastic.

@elhacienda Problem is no one really knows who is the one enshrouded in darkness. I knew who he was from the beginning when Holmes said professor. That is the greatest mystery of the movie. I can't wait to see him in the sequel since he is literally Sherlock Holmes' equal. We knew who was the villain, but what was his motive, that was the main question. Also how did he survive. That was the main focus on detective work. They also portrayed Holmes perfectly.
