Why can't I ever watch a video like this without a bunch of guys from different countries (or at least on the sides of different countries) getting into a big "mine is bigger than yours" contest? Seriously. Let's just say in the west everybody got shot up, in the east they froze their asses off, and in the pacific, planes crashed into ships.
What went wrong: 1) There were 3 battalions of German Inf. defending Omaha with at least 2 88mm and many other 50mm and 75mm AT guns and supporting Inf. weapons. 2) There were only 5 exits up through the high bluffs off the beach and they were heavily defended. 3) About 64 - 72 tanks were landed on Omaha but they could not get up the high bluffs or the draws until the Infantry and Engineers went up the bluffs and took the defenders' positions.
I'm amazed at how insecure Brits are about Omaha. Britain and the United States both had many victories (and defeats) that are worth respect and historical treatment. Get over it fer chrissakes.
As for the Ambrose comments, did any of you putzes bother to read Pegasus Bridge? Honestly, you English are really embarrassing yourselves.
I think bickering about who did what is pointless and disrespectful of those who died. I suspect that Americans, British (like myself) and other allies alike all had a respect for each other's victories, defeats and sacrifices, as we should now. The fact is, at different times during the war, individual countries had it worst. The US had a hellish time at Omaha and Hurtgen Forest, the British came off worst at Dunkirk and Arnhem and the Canadians suffered the most at Dieppe. Honour them all.
A common thought amoungst Americans is that Omaha was the most important objective but if any of the beaches were left unsecured the Germans would have a wedge between the allies, Omaha was just as important as the others, however due to the length of the beach at low tide, all the obstacles, lack of Armour and veteran defenders, it was certainly the most bloodthirsty, taking 5 hours to secure it, the other beaches did experiance similar bloodshed but only briefly having armour and cover to help
Hmmm.. Flashheart bemoans the one-way, lop-sided, 'only-Americans-died' version of events. I wonder if he's ever given thought to the selfish and arrogant viewpoint the rest of the UK have had to endure since 'England' won the war, '..if you think old England's done', England at war with Germany etc, etc, etc..? Many other non-English towns were extensively bombed or blitzed during these times - not just London. Many, MANY non-English died in WW2
even though i really liked the vid, i gritted my teeth at the begining. Did Stpehn E Ambrose write this? americaamericaamericaamericaamerica!!! it all happened to america, Only Omaha had fighting, Only americans fought hard! BOLLOCKS! they could have at least mentioned the millions of others who fought, not in detail due to time restraints but they still could have wrote it better! cheers for the vidsmate :)
Great insight into the production side, but statments at the beginning, of the landing grinding to a halt and it being a disaster (that is the landing as a whole) are being somewhat sensationalist. What about the other 4 landing sites. were the Canadians Brits and US at the other beaches just going to collaspe and run away because OMAHA copped a flogging?
As far as I know the iplayer is just availible in the UK for now, which is a real shame. Not sure what else to suggest, maybe contact The Smithsonian Channel, do they ever release dvds of their programmes?
Glad people liked the 'making of' video. As a result of all the comments and hits the BBC has decided to reschedule and is repeating 'Bloody Omaha' on the 27th Jan!
It will also be availible online via the bbc iplayer for the following week (UK only I'm afraid)
In the US - The Smithsonian channel will be showing it soon (see their website)
Thanks for all the comments, who'd have thought Youtube hits could make the BBC reschedule!!
If we're not in the UK will we still be able to access it online? I don't have tivo or the smithsonian channel and due to my school schedule I won't be able to watch this on TV. A real shame because it looks like something I'd really like to watch. What about the military channel?
anybody now if this is on dvd!!!

You guys made an awesome video. It was like SPR except with the bloody water and the stacks of limbs and bodies. Love to see more of your work.

So, be quiet - it works both ways, asshole.

This is kinda great movie I'm I'm not glad staying in Hong Kong against to watch it...
I wonder how long with the film be?
Besides, I've just found those GIs are always repeating their movements which , perhaps, has been a mistake for them.

Not allowed, and it would have to be split up into 10min sections - not ideal,
sorry
if your in the UK, the iplayer will be your best bet - 24hour streaming, free - for a week after the 27th
