For R.Carter this first Db is always a missed target and next ones as well.I don't really get it ?
In this tune his intonation always suprises me in a bad way. How come !!! ??? on so many versions of this song always the same story with his bass line :(
How do you come back from a solo like that !?!?..Joe Henderson was like "aww shit I'll just jam out on one note until I come up with something because Freddie just stole the show.."
@Jonnyferrari202 Actually Joe's solo has a lot more nuance and playfullness to it. It's a nice contrast to Freddie. What you call jam out on one note is actually him developing a little motif to work with.
@deco02 All greats on this live performance: Ron Carter on bass, Joe Henderson, tenor sax; Tony Williams, drums, Freddie Hubbard, trumpet and of course Herbie Hancock, piano.
That may be the best Freddie Hubbard solo I've ever heard. When my daughter was an infant, she literally turned her head while feeding from a bottle when she heard this solo when this Blue Note special was on HBO. Later when Cassandra Wilson came on and started singing, she crapped her diaper. True Story!
@somesanity1 WE are all so different...I feel the same about Lowell George, and Little Feat ...to some HE gave ears, and some, ears and a little more sensitivity.....and soul....:)
I quite like the US3 version inthe same way that I quite like Ronnie Jordan's version of So What which I saw him play live at Ronnie Scott's and it was amazing. I commend anyone that likes a jazz tune enough to make a remake of it.....just proves that they have a good ear for what sounds good rather than the crap they are dishing out in the charts today. Now that is a load of bollocks!! I love jazz and if it's included in any song then I am inclined to like it!
Hubbard opens with a lyrical motif establishes the changes ... includes space ... then starts to burn (look at the note he delineates when he goes into the upper register) having grounded the solo he cooks and it is meaningful shit played with intensity and total commitment ... finally he gives primacy to a lyrical approach when he takes it out. A god of trumpet
