I think you hit the nail on the head: organized religion has nothing to do with any gods, since the gods they advertise can't be proven and the things their gods are given credit for can usually be explained by perfectly ordinary processes - sometimes even outright fraud and chicanery on the part of the 'faithful'.
It is probably best in one's spiritual quest to rely on your own good sense.

i'm not a christian, but you can take any form of religion completely literal, completely metaphorical, or a little of both.
i've never believed in devils or demons in the physical form, but we sure do have them in a metaphorical form.
would you really want to tell your kids do whatever you want in life, and uhh treat other like you would want to be treated.
