@MrFawske3n he probably meant something more like, "If you get a nice set of sounds you can stop focusing on the bullshit and you can start making music."
@elborio I don't hear it either. Anyway, this is a Vengeance kick, which means it's already over-compressed for you... Putting another compressor on this kick is destructive and/or useless, unless you really really know what you're doing.
@MessyJatador use an envelope on the pitch of a oscillator youll be supprised what u can do. basicly with good thinking you can make all drum sounds you want. it gives so much freedom :D
@elborio I know how to make a kick. Pitch down a sine wave, play with ADSR (especially attack) on the pitch, layer, etc. But I was looking for extra tips in this process.
good kick:get 2 complex kick samples, put eq on both of em the one that sounds more punchy make it high cut for one that doesn't make it low cut,put compressor and configure it..i think that's it.Haven't watched the video but i think nzmusic101 did this what i said

@TheBdog92 Bypassing is essentially turning the effect off. So when you 'bypass' something you hear everything apart from that effect/plug in that you have bypassed.
There are some default eq's in logic for kick drums, toms, etc... I acctually don't have a clue how the whole EQ thing works, so I think of using those default eq's. Can you tell me if I can use them, or do they have a bad sounding, and it's better to eq on my own, although I don't know how to ...?!
hi thanks for sharing this. I'd like to follow it with the exact (geek i know) samples. could you tell us which Vengeance pack they came from as I have both essential electros and the corresponding .wav samples (37 and 58) sound different!
great vid mate. another kick secrect if anyone is "trolling", BBE sonic stomp plugin does remarkable things to bass drum samples.. immediate clarity, check it.
a good way to do this too would be parallel compression. Make a copy of the original kick drum track and put a compressor on it. Fastest attack setting and squash the crap out of it. around -15 gain reduction with +15 dB output. and something like 4:1 to 8:1 ratio. Then mix the two together. The original kick works as the attack portion, and the compressed gives it sustain and umph.
thumbs up if you think he should do a video for each plug in (or every insert) on logic pro 9. I know it would take a while but each vid don't have to be very long, just a brief overview of what each insert does and how you can use it to your advantage. I dunno about everybody else, but it would be a huge effort to me, and it would give you something to do! Im not being a thumbs up whore i just want him to see this!!!
This is kick layering, not "how to make a good kick" "how to make a kick sound better".
Could be the title! ;)
How to make a kickdrum can be seen in my latest video.
Not claiming my kickdrum is as powerful as a vecdrum kick tho.
But there's a huge difference, attack transients from "real" drums are "harder" then synthsounds, generally.
But if one want to make his own kickdrum like vengeance do, they still do similar things, only difference is layering with a attack sample on top of the sinewave
@didiblanch I believe it's a Vengeance package, you can find them anywhere online but you have to pay for them or.....get them as a "gift" if you get what I'm saying. Anyways google Vengeance Packages. There are about 8 or 9 total I believe and they all have different samples, really awesome stuff and I can almost say its essential to have. Cheers-Trance Cartel
Hi Ryan quick question....how would I go about making my low end kick and high end kick into one midi file, like say bouncing them so that both of them are on 1 midi instead of 2 separate one's not sure if this makes sense, but i want to turn 2 midi files into just one so I don't have to have such a clutter. Thanks mate email response to trancecartel@gmail.com cheers
I have a question. Whenever I do fast triplets or 16th notes with my kick drum, the first kick sounds good, and then all the ones following it seem to die down a little. Does anyone know why?
Just a quick question if i sample a kick from an existing dance song or dubstep then will i still need to double my kicks up as most likely the artist already used two kicks
@cutyourfringekid u don't need to have to kicks..but it will sound better with one kick and sub kick.. that means that one kick must be sub..so u must you eq to do that.
@SwitchUpBroadcast You could invert the phase with one of the kick layers, but the best thing it just to go by ear. Also, if you layer your kicks just like the video (one low, one mid/high) then there will be barely any phasing issues, as the kicks have different frequencies. So your best bet would be two have the kick layers covering different frequencies. I have layered two low kicks before and it did sound proper, so there really are no strict rules though. If it sounds good, it IS good!
Hi Ryan , I would like to say thank you for all of your tutorial especially this one , it really helped , I use fruity loop , but I dont have that one pack from vengeance. Could you send me the .wav file in my inbox for the kick please?
DON'T FORGET to SUPPORT!!! Its only like $2 a song, with Ryan, your getting more that a BANGER! You get to learn how to make them too!!! Keep it up!!!
1. Vengeance takes alot of sounds from other sample packs like Ueberschall, then add some bad compression to give it that "warm" feel and sell it without the originals permission.
2. They 'sample' loops, chords, drums etc.. from commercial songs and then sell. Again without the originals permission.
3. If your are using vengeance sample packs for noncommercial use than it's still bad. Because they remove alot of the originals quality by over compressing the sound.
@teagankelkmusic (continue)4. Vengeance sample packs ARE NOT royalty free. See for yourself and read the 'readme' file "You can use the Sounds in any type of non commercial music production without permission". This implies that the sample packs can NOT be used in commercial use. STILL DONT BELEIVE ME? @eduardo13rocha yes that's why Steve Angello made a banger hit with a sample from Vengeance, top 5 Beatport remixed by everyone and played in all dance club... KNAS!
@linkward Steve Angello is a millionaire. He can pay thousands for the licence of where ever that sample came from. Still though, I don't get your point here,
@eduardo13rocha To this day the Vengeance samples are simply the BEST out there. Every famous producers use them and have them. No other packs approach this quality for dance music sounds.
@eduardo13rocha To this day the Vengeance samples are simply the BEST out there. Every famous producers use them and have them. No other packs approach this quality for dance music sounds. You can turn it in any way you want to but no one cares about those details. Your comment would also imply that Ryan Enzed had to pay millions to release his track on beatport ?

good job on getting 6 tracks signed :) Acctually the same amount for me as well ;) I noticed one is coming out on BigFish..what about the rest of them..what labels?
@Rezzidex I'm with you mate, I know what mixing and mastering does, but it just seems like everyone considers it completely obvious, and doesn't actually explain what it is or how to do it to beginners D:
i used the exact kicks but your high end one doesnt sound the same at all to me on my computer. ugh now im confused. i need monitors not a yamaha surround sound system
nice vid, another technique ive come across is use 3 different kick drums, 1 for the low end, other for the mid, and the third for the high end you want, if you use ableton like me, use eq three, and turn off some frequency ranges but keep the range you need, with the low end under 100 Hz, Mid 100 - 500 Hz, and high 500Hz and above. so when these 3 kicks are combined they sound totally different, and you can simply change the kick sample to get a different sounding kick
Hey! Massive thanks again for these beauts! Because your so helpful, I'm sort of reluctant to ask you things. But two have come to mind, Is there a reason that you don't but your kicks/snares through the EXS24 or any sampler? Woulda thought MIDI would be easier to deal with. Also Your snare sound! Are they from a specific sample pack? Thanks so muuchh!!
Thank you once more Ryan!! You really listen to your viewers, I requested a kickdrum tutorial previous video and a few days later it's up, it's so great man :) and this tutorial is very helpful. Thanks so much mate, and keep it up!
So what does the enveloper do? Cause I'm pretty sure Fl Studio doesnt have one and it made a huge difference on your kick. Anything else I could do for the same outcome?
@newzealanddude92 Fl studio's "fruity limiter" has a "transient shaper setting" in the presets menu. Transient shapers do exactly what their name implies, shaping the attack and release transients of a sound. The end result is something that sounds akin to a hard compressor and/or gater, and yet neither. Compressing and gating will give you the same result thought with a little tweaking.
@newzealanddude92 you can try the maximus plugin, atleast that's how i'd do it ^^ too bad i can't think of an easier way right now but maximus should do the trick also
@newzealanddude92 The way I sometimes do it in FL is by using the decay and sustain settings in the sampler - attack at 0, quick decay and sustain somewhere in the middle. Even if you loaded your kick directly onto the playlist, as far as I remember it still creates an instance of the sampler for that sound. There's a dropdown menu on the pattern sequencer, where you'll find it grouped under Audio Clips or something (I'm on a Mac right now so I can't check - sorry).
@FenderStrata Look into Stillwell Plugins, I think it's called. I use Cubase 5 and they're amazing. Free too, though you should buy them if you like them. :)
Wow.... I'm more of a trance junkie than electro stuff (Though I do enjoy a good electro song) But still I love watching your tuts... Sometimes they help me when I'm producing trance! Nice job mate! :)
Ive been using logic for a while now do you find that audio regions don't snap directly to the bar even you when you have it selected in the settings?
is there a work around for this or is it something us logic users have to put up with?
Not sure if this is what you were referring to by 'settings', but the drop down in the top right where you select the snap (smart, beat, division etc) has an on/off check for 'snap to absolute value'. For some reason it defaults to off, so check that if you haven't already. I advise not using smart wither if you have it on that.
Hey man thanks for the tip my drums seem to have more presence and punch verses using alot of gain. Thanks again.

i learned 4 very valuable key points here.
1. the same as mastering cant fix a good mix, you cant fix up bad samples with good processing. choosing the right samples is important.
2.don't overprocess and pile on effects, rather be very precise with a few.
3. eq your stacked samples so that they blend together, never boost two kick samples in the same place.
4. add the dynamics effects to the bus, not on the individual channels.
thanks for this tut.

So what does the enveloper do? Cause I'm pretty sure Fl Studio doesnt have one and it made a huge difference on your kick. Anything else I could do for the same outcome?
newzealanddude92 9 months ago

I use Cubase 6, Do you know any good sidechain plugs or somethin.. There's no default sidechain in the Cubase compressor.
Awesome tutorials btw! :)

Ive been using logic for a while now do you find that audio regions don't snap directly to the bar even you when you have it selected in the settings?
is there a work around for this or is it something us logic users have to put up with?
nice tut btw

@ADTPuk
Hauntzz 9 months ago
@Hauntzz Thanks man i always used the smart option.. And thought it was the best to use
ive put it on ticks and it seems to be a lot better
Thanks again

@ADTPuk
No problem, yeah smart is a useful idea but I find it tends to behave strangely.
Personally I have it on division and then change it depending on how fine I need to be.
