I was the only one who had ever seen the movie much less heard of it, lol.

Well said my friend. There has been a lot of that going round lately. These remakes! If the original film is so good why attempt to remake it? Why fix something that isn't broken. The way I look at it is that a remake ruins the legacy of the original film. If they were going to remake anything I rather they try and remake some film that was poor. At least there will be something to improve on in the first place.
