I also have a 75g and have been deciding how many LEDs to do. Im going to use the 3w crees. How many 1w LEDs of each color do you have and do you have a par measurement? I'm looking to replicate a 250w metal halide in intensity so I can eventually go sps.
I just brought some led floodligts and rigged them over my reef tank, i am running a 14000k metal hilide floodlight in the middle, it looks awsome and the corols love it
@iwimp1994 t-5's with led's are good, also metal halides with t-5s are good, but if you're going to use metal halides then you might as well just use metal halides and forget the led's and vice versa. in my opinion the whole point of LED's is to use them as an alternative to t-5/mh.
Brother could you tell me how many colours have you used in this to get the colour in the video and it looks just fabulous. I' am waiting for your advice. Is that costly....?
I heard that LEDs are pretty good but they are better suited for softies. On reefcentral someone mentioned that LEDs are not recommended for harder corals such as Acros, Montipora and Clams. How do you feel about that?
hang on iam lost im new to marine (setting up slowly) so u can have a running tank with led's and reef still growing and its better then floros and metal halids ?
@soundwave2thousand hey love the tank, but if you would like some new LED Pixle sticks for your aquarium, please check out bblites.com. we have a three color stick. red, green, and blue. they are water proof and we also can install auto-fade mode. please ask questions for more information.
Ive had this going since February of 2009. It still has beautiful output and the results are amazing. I can go buy a coral or trade one with a fellow reefer and we each get different results. The corals I receive change color as do theirs. The ones I get change in a good way. Colors come out that halides couldn't accomplish. The tank is way different looking now than in this video. I wish I still had a camera that took videos...
The LEDs last for about 10 years before needing replacement. You spend a little more than a halide fixture would cost but in the long run, you save tons. The power bill is noticeably less, as well.
As far as a comparison to halides, they are hard to compare. Par is about the same as 250 watters, though.
Standard 75 Oceanic Glass... The sides aren't really clean, just coralline covered... The rock is a mix of Fiji, Tonga, and a few others... About 60ish pounds worth... I used CPVC pillars and drilled the rock...
Questions: is this acrylic or glass? What do you use to keep the sides clean? LOVE your live rock- any idea what kind it is or where you got it from? Much more interesting then basic figi rock. How many pounds did you use? What did you use to stick the rock together? Would love to see a vid of your filtration. Awesome!

You may want to turn down your power heads. Your green chromie and hippo tang look like a salmon trying to swim up stream against the current.

Hi, I was wondering what kind of led’s did you use and what kind of power source you use to. Like did you use ballast or some 12v power adapter?

with the open top doesn't the room smell?

@4k3el If tank water ever smells then you aren't taking very good care of your fish..
If everything is in balance it should actually kind of smell good and earthy.

Very nice build, i read your thread on RC, good job. Just want to know how the SPS's are doing... I see you have some monti caps and acros?

Sure is. It shimmers like Halides never could.

About 3, I guess. They run at 1 Amp and wattage is kinda irrelevant.

Hi soundwave, about how much did this cost to build????
thanks lucifa
Lucifa1968 2 years ago
Right at $600.00.

@soundwave2thousand for just the lights?
Mikegardensandcooks 2 years ago
@soundwave2thousand why go through the hassle of building your own when you can buy some for about the same price, maybe a little more?

I`m curious, how long do the LED`s last for before having to replace them?
Actually overall, How do these compare with halide?
And, thank you for this build and information share. I`m planning a 90gal reef and think I`ll DIY an LED fixture.
