Finlandia Hymn was composed by Jean Sibelius in 1899 for a symphony orchestra and it was put in words not until 50 years later. This was just a little part of the masterpiece. Versions like Be Still My Soul that have been made of it are missing the best part of the composition. Just listen to the whole work with a symphony orchestra and youll enjoy it.

This video made me cry. I am an American with deep Finnish descent on both sides of my family and I'm the only one who hasn't been there yet. I've been doing a log of genealogical research and I have cousins there! They want me to visit! They want to know why my ancestors left. I tell them - I don't know why, but they were poor and probably needed better work at the time. I can't wait to visit, thank you.

That's kind of weird that it's a Christian hymn elsewhere, as it has been composed by Sibelius (a Finnish composer). But maybe there are several versions...

It is a beutiful song :) But Eiledon was right, it is a Finnish song and not a christian hymn. Although Sibelius never actually meant it to be sung, it has many lyrics outside Finland and "Be Still My Soul" is one them. Finlandia Hymn was also chosen as a national song for an African state Biafra, which, I understand, is now part of Nigeria.
