@SimonBak90 Perhaps a late answer but still here we go: The pop-up flash communicates with the other flashes via very short and weak flashes of light. The external flashes have an extra sensor to see those flashes. Google for Nikon creative lighting system (CLS) if you need to know more.
i love mine though i hate the rubber grips, same with my D3 they're so annoying but awell nikon really needs to fix that design flaw, i'm glad that i'm not the only photographer using CLS for shoots now! haha, i just hate the range of it since its only 10m
Based on conversations with the client, the lighting was preplanned. Client had pointed to several of my images at my web site that they liked and wanted a similar feel.

This had me shivering nonstop (I hate bees).
Great video, short and to the point(s).
It would definitely be great to be able to hear the conversation between you and the subject while you were working with each other.
Lastly, did you go out to this shoot with the Octabox + 3x SB's in mind as your primary/secondary light source?
