At first, I was inclined to think Conrad was being petty, but by the end, I agreed with him. Running is a simple enough sport that it should be won by the fastest team and not become overcomplicated by a bunch of arbitrary technicalities. He was protesting the weight of minor technical matters over better running. Kaplan did a typical lawyer-type thing of trying to find a loophole to get him out of a loss. There's too much of that in society as it is.
you know what is funny? you couldn't get todays tv stars to do this, that's what tv in the 70's was, just fucking great!! i'm so glad i lived it...also, i always thought, and know, lynda carter was on cbs for wonder woman...to battle the bionic woman on abc-why no lindsay wagner on this? anyway, i think abc studios produced wonder woman-why else would lynda be on the abc team!? any help out there? let me know.. thx, fembotzcan
@torontoprofwaiter wonder woman was on ABC for 1 season then it was canceled then CBS picked it up and it was on air for 2 seasons.. When she was on this, the show was on ABC..
@kwebster62 Conrad is a hot head, Ben went to early and way behind the lines. Conrad had no idea that Kaplan played baseball and was a decent athlete. Surprise!
@63weezer dude, at one point before the sprint in the whole argument he's smoking! hahaha...what a massive tool. ah the 70's..this shit ruled in elementary school.
If this were done today, it would be loaded with "talking heads" interviews from Conrad, Kaplan, and Savalas about the race, and a bunch of bleeps. The camera would've caught one of the NBC female contestants crying on the sidelines, and the racist jokes would've been scrutinized to death by the media about whether this show is "out of hand". I really wish TV didn't take itself so seriously, this is awesome!
Funny how Cosell always passed himself off as the voice of integrity in sports journalism and yet relished stuff like this. He even briefly hosted a variety show.
I remember seeing this live. This was a Big Special back in the day. I always looked forward to it. Oh yeah, Conrad was a hot head. In fact, his famous quick temper was the reason why the old Eveready battery commercials used him as their spokesman, daring people to knock a battery off of his shoulder, saying "I dare you to knock this off my shoulder. I dare you."
@guarddog22 I watched this show every year as kid; perhaps my youth was duped by the show, but I don't recall ever once thinking it was staged. That many of the events were silly, and some stars took them very seriously (while others did not), may have made it look staged. Telly sure was having fun here with all the appeals to his Greek heritage (as if it gave him some sort of authority). Overall, I think it was light-hearted yet genuine competition that was good PR for the networks.
@TheLeroyMoon Hello, LeroyMoon. Well, even if it was mostly staged, you still enjoyed it and that's all that matters. (I always thought Telly Savalas was an underrated actor).
@guarddog22 Sadly, I think Telly's bald, ethnic look held him back. Plus, fans rarely allow one to resume his career after playing an icon. I miss the Battle, though; I felt bad for performers who would humiliate themselves (e.g. heartthrobs trying too hard at football). Performers aren't as bound to the networks now, so they probably don't see any interest in the Battle. IMO, it helped satisfy the public's interest in seeing celebrities as human beings, & I'd prefer it to tabloids anyday.
@guarddog22 I doubt that. The team members got paid for these games, with 20 grand to the winners and 10 grand to third place. Considering how much less TV stars were paid back then, there was a real incentive to win. It wouldn't suprise me if the interviews were scripted though.
oh this brings back great family memories, when we all anticipated these shows & watched them together. Now with over 100 channels available & DVR's in every room there isn't any anticipation. I miss these simpler times.
I had to watch it again. You gotta love conrad...check out the expression at 5:12...he may have been thinking "get your %&#$ hand off me", before hitting the cigarette.
I remember these shows [from] when I was a kid. Awesome! I forgot how great the Battles were...you won't find actors doing this stuff today. Howard Cosell made it all work. Thanks for posting!
Yes... TV viewing at it's best. Nothing like this nowadays. Real emotions, maybe some milking it to get it interesting, but by far, pure enterainment. Robert Conrad must've not known Gabe Kaplan ran track in high school, or unless he was paid big time to take the chance, and see if he could really beat Gabe. But smoking and running don't mix at all here. Clearly, Gabe's height and long strides out ran Robert's efforts. And no disrespects, but Linda Carter sure was giving Gabe alot of PDA! Wowee!
Well, watch any interview with "Bob" Conrad from back in the day. The man has no concept of the word humility. He's really just a giant dick and has no sense of himself. That's how you become old and lonely my friends... old and lonely.
My friends? What the hell am I talking about... I'm a solipsist and none of you even exist.
whoo hoo, Farrah Fawcett lays some sweet kisses on some hot blonde. I hope Epstein enjoyed his time with the stars. They probably ignore him these days.
Funny, I am looking at this clip because of a lunch conversation today. In the same conversation we talked about how it used to be that at the water cooler you could always talk about something like this because almost everyone would know what to what you were referring. Now with 150 channels on the cable, we gain choice, but a common frame of reference is perhaps weakened.
Gabe Kaplan poker player also high school and college runner. Watch him force loud mouth Bob Conrad, who is smoking, into a bluff and then call his bluff knowing Conrad had no chance. Even Kaplan's own team doesn't want him to run. Don't let the fro fool you Kaplan is stone cold gambler.
i see posts where people say "who cares its just a race", but you have to remember back then, there were only 3 big networks and this was always a competition to see who the best network was. these stars had a personal connection to their network, not like today.
i admit conrad was an ass, but anybody who has competed, whether in a rec or pro league wants to win, even if in the end it doesnt mean anything other than bragging rights.
I love this old clip that shows Farrah fighting against an injustice...because that was a definite thread in that ran through her core. It was a streak in her nature to rail against injustice. She was no pushover. Love her. God rest her soul.
I loved watching this as kid. Back then it seemed to me like the entire pool of celebrities/networks was smaller and more intimate, almost like a "family". Even older personalities like Cosell were popular w/ kids as well as grandmothers b/c we were all experiencing the same media and therefore had the same pop culture references. Is all that gone now or am I just waxing nostalgic? The web has supposedly made the world smaller but sometimes I feel like it's made it bigger and less personal.
Funny, I am looking at this clip because of a lunch conversation today. @SettleNow You are so right!!......I still remember watching this and in 7th grade at the time and recall going to school the next day and everyone talking about this race. If they had something like this today, it would proberly be called "Battle of the Reality Stars"
@TheFrogger15 Yeah, these specials were always the topic of conversation the next day at school. I too remember SCREAMING for joy when Gabe Kaplan beat that old sourpuss Conrad.
I guess this "traumatic" event put Bob Conrad into a massive depression, followed by years of alcohol abuse. An actor, living in LA in the 70's (before Mexico moved in and ruined in), money, all the tail he could pump, was derailed because of this gay little race. Sad... Sad effects of short man syndrome -
Oh thank you for such beautiful things you say about others. it really does take a giant asshole to know of an even bigger one. Each person has a right to their opinion and i have stated mine. Oh BTW go screw yourself.
Joanna Pettet @ 2:12 "I don't know what all the hullabaloo is anyway." That may have been the last time anyone has used the word hullabaloo in a sentence.
2nd- Everyone's personality is different, robert conrad is just this way with sports, it's not all for the show, anyone can see this was not a act,- duuhhhhh!
If you do not have anything nice to say- keep your nasty mouth shut.-It's obvious you have to make rude comments to everyone who comments on this- You obviously have a problem.
Sure Savalas was right, the slow poke gets to run a shorter leg, so the slow one doesn't get as far behind as she would have. The faster one does run further, but he's the faster one.
But so what? Battle of the network T&A was just for fun.
@edridz132 You will notice that liberals are all about free speech and fighting the powers that be, accept when they have done something stupid and are about to be called on it. Then, all of the sudden, liberals want to talk about other things and avoid the game of politics. Hehehehe
@edridz132 Well, I do not watch Family Guy, so I am not sure what you mean. That said, I am no fan of Palin. She is an empty shell of a person. Devoid of anything interesting to me whatsoever. The only reason she has anyones attention is because of her screwed up family, the goofy names she gave her kids and the fact that she looks hot. That's it. She is less qualified than the community organizer/house painter in the currently occupying the White House.
sorry little drunk earlier... dont know what dunder is.... anyways what happened in the episode was there was a girl with downs syndrome and at once point they asked her what her parents did. she said my mother is the former govenor of alaska....so palin wants that episode pulled and never played agian.
so thats what i ment.....its both sides that complain...both sides idea of living free is living they way THEY want everyone to live.
I believe what you said did happened on BOTNS, in a later season after this, when LOU FERRINGO and Conrad somehow became the last ones standing in the "Simon sez" competition. They placed a Duracell battery on Conrad's shoulder, and Ferringo knocked it off when the simon sez told him to. Funny, a huge brute like Ferringo looking down at someone like Conrad! And I think they were told to "kiss and make up"... can't remember what happened after that!
I love seeing Farrah being logical and then fiesty at 6:10 forward. These were 2 of her best traits and many people did not realize that she had them.
Wow what a piece of nostalgia, so many of these memorable celebrities are gone.
Conrad was always a blow hard and poor sport, but on the other hand, much of it was intentional; he knew show biz and knew how to keep the viewers watching.
Conrad is such a blow hard! Little guy should be careful Gabe Kaplan don't knock him out! Conrad picks his spots - he never picks on guys who will fight him back. He's yellow.
I totally loved these Battle of the Network Stars events. Robert Conrad was always such a jerk. These celebs really took the competition seriously. I wonder if they could pull something like this off today if they limited participants to the broadcast networks as it was back then. There are just too many channels today otherwise. They could just do it with ABC, NBC and CBS. How nice to see Farrah young healthy and full of life.
Yes, isn't Farrah lovely... I watched most of the tv shows that are represented here growing up. I always looked so forward to watching these competitions.
This clip is good for soooo many reasons. Check out the ABC team...Richie Cunningham, Juan Epstein, Laverne, Mr. Kotter, Wonder Woman!...what a colection of characters... Schneider "looking for another mick to hit".....Cosell......Farrah(RIP) and the gorgeous Lynda Carter...I am forever grateful to Bill Simmons for leading me to this
That was probably one of a very few tv interviews in the 70 where Telly would not be smoking cigas AND holding a glass of scotch in hios other hand...
Hard to believe that only a few years earlier Robert Conrad, wearing the world's tightest pants, was the sexiest man in America on the Wild Wild West.
TV was much better back then and TV stars didn't act like the primadonnas we have today. Hollywood today is full of fake stars and attention starved assholes.

If not, when this was recorded, Bob Conrad was age 47 and Gabe Kaplan was 31 (per Wiki). A lot happens to the body in that time period.

Joanna Pettet @ 2:12 "I don't know what all the hullabaloo is anyway." That may have been the last time anyone has used the word hullabaloo in a sentence.

Woah! This is a fun little tv program from the 70's, not a political statement of any kind! Dang.
Someone is SO going to be blocked from commenting! That's right! My video - I have the power!

First of all i'm not a buddy okay, I'm a woman.

Conrad is a competitive son of a gun.

This is classic. I watched this live and always rooted for ABC, but to see this again after 30+years was so cool.

@anakina1 I agree with your comment. I faintly remember BOTNS because I was too young. It's wild to see all these big hollywood stars come together.

ok do you really have to pull politics into it.....get a life.
edridz132 2 years ago
@edridz132 You will notice that liberals are all about free speech and fighting the powers that be, accept when they have done something stupid and are about to be called on it. Then, all of the sudden, liberals want to talk about other things and avoid the game of politics. Hehehehe
spudnutsncoffee 2 years ago
@spudnutsncoffee i know its a little late....b but i dunder
but i think i get what your talking about. just like that liberal bitch sarahpalin with what family guy said about her right???
edridz132 2 years ago
@edridz132 Well, I do not watch Family Guy, so I am not sure what you mean. That said, I am no fan of Palin. She is an empty shell of a person. Devoid of anything interesting to me whatsoever. The only reason she has anyones attention is because of her screwed up family, the goofy names she gave her kids and the fact that she looks hot. That's it. She is less qualified than the community organizer/house painter in the currently occupying the White House.
spudnutsncoffee 2 years ago
@spudnutsncoffee
sorry little drunk earlier... dont know what dunder is.... anyways what happened in the episode was there was a girl with downs syndrome and at once point they asked her what her parents did. she said my mother is the former govenor of alaska....so palin wants that episode pulled and never played agian.
so thats what i ment.....its both sides that complain...both sides idea of living free is living they way THEY want everyone to live.

Conrad was always a hothead. ;-) he should have had a "battery on the shoulder knock-off" contest. ;-)
1sababoy 2 years ago
@1sababoy,
I believe what you said did happened on BOTNS, in a later season after this, when LOU FERRINGO and Conrad somehow became the last ones standing in the "Simon sez" competition.

Robert Conrad was so damn gorgeous! Short, stocky and SASSY! Oh how I used to love watching this show...thanks so much for posting.

Wow what a piece of nostalgia, so many of these memorable celebrities are gone.
Conrad was always a blow hard and poor sport, but on the other hand, much of it was intentional; he knew show biz and knew how to keep the viewers watching.
circuitdemon 2 years ago
oh i remember this when it aired i was 9 years old, remember this so well with robert conrad having a fit, it was classic.
actually i think robert conrad was a very good looking man.
this was classic tv, never be tv like it again
kajehgb 2 years ago
Conrad is such a blow hard! Little guy should be careful Gabe Kaplan don't knock him out! Conrad picks his spots - he never picks on guys who will fight him back. He's yellow.

I totally loved these Battle of the Network Stars events. Robert Conrad was always such a jerk. These celebs really took the competition seriously. I wonder if they could pull something like this off today if they limited participants to the broadcast networks as it was back then. There are just too many channels today otherwise. They could just do it with ABC, NBC and CBS. How nice to see Farrah young healthy and full of life.
carlynutt 2 years ago
Yes, isn't Farrah lovely... I watched most of the tv shows that are represented here growing up. I always looked so forward to watching these competitions.

This clip is good for soooo many reasons. Check out the ABC team...Richie Cunningham, Juan Epstein, Laverne, Mr. Kotter, Wonder Woman!...what a colection of characters... Schneider "looking for another mick to hit".....Cosell......Farrah(RIP) and the gorgeous Lynda Carter...I am forever grateful to Bill Simmons for leading me to this

Conrad lost because he was smoking before the race. He had no wind. And yes Farrah and Linda were looking good.

I remember this extremely well. I even remember that they had a run off and Kaplan kicked Conrads butt. haha good stuff.

That was probably one of a very few tv interviews in the 70 where Telly would not be smoking cigas AND holding a glass of scotch in hios other hand...
diuga1 2 years ago
Hard to believe that only a few years earlier Robert Conrad, wearing the world's tightest pants, was the sexiest man in America on the Wild Wild West.
Rexcetera 2 years ago
TV was much better back then and TV stars didn't act like the primadonnas we have today. Hollywood today is full of fake stars and attention starved assholes.

Gus Johnson would be the perfect play-by-play host to a modern version of this!
