Gee, I wonder who you are gravlee1. LOL Good to see your video here brother. Was with you when I was in 138 00-04, AT shop and other fun stuff. Have fun, I miss those days.
@6806goats1 Internet here is too slow (Iraq) and I used FRM to download then watch. It was great to see old faces and the clowning around. Awesome video, thx.
I was on this cruse AK2 then demoted to SK2 now LS1 the fun never stops. I so miss aviation world I wished I could go back. AK and SK were different. I just wished the navy realized this.
Each signal signifies an all clear. First all personnel near the aircraft have done their job. All checks out. Then catapult hooking. Then more signals to ground crew. Then salute to pilot signifies all OK for shoot. Then crouch posiion to signify that the shooter passes everything. All safe. Then the shot. REPEAT EVERYTHING AGAIN.
Great video. It brought me right back to 30 years ago. Somethings really don't change. Worked in the AT shop and I level 78-81. Working the flight deck was the most entertaining job I've ever had. The pay sucked, but the rest of it was cool.
You are correct sir...if you are 1" behind the exhaust on that freakin' thing when it's at full throttle it is literally PAINFUL! I can still feel my sinuses rattling!
I know nothing about your airplanes. I think that we Infrantry types may be the sharp end of the stick. We just piss ourselves. Never at hot shower or a bed.
Hey I was a VAQ-138 shooter also, JFK Med-IO cruise 82'
Things have not changed at all on those big gray boats except the addition of females. The worst thing the navy has ever done. Damn if I would be carrying the load for those wave, it was bad enough I had to do it for other men.....
Blueshirts are aircraft handlers. Yellowshirts are aircraft DIRECTORS and the ultimate authority on the flight deck. Whatever your rank, if a yellowshirt tells you do do something, you do it or you might get killed.
If a blueshirt tells you to do something and you don't, you might wake up the next day to find some part of your bird busted that required 10 hours of maintenance to repair.
Not like I would have ever done such a thing when I wore blue. Nope. NEVER.
So me as a LCDR shooter (and seasoned naval aviator) on the flight deck has to comply with you as a second class petty officer because you're a yellow shirt? Ultimate authority???? Are you out of your mind?
Yes, I do wear a yellow jersey as a shooter, but I've never met an ABH who considers a shooter a "yellow shirt." Ultimate authority on the flight deck is the CO, then the Air Boss. Yellows do good work and do their part to get aircraft to where they need to be, but having an over empowered attitude about your role on the flight deck leads to crunches or worse. It usually leads to you being a blueshirt again or having to requal. I've seen it.
Man this vid rocks and as a former shooter myself, I enjoyed every second. Kinda brought a tear to my eye. What memories I have from the old days. Attack Squadron-94 Mighty Shrikes CVW-11 USS Enterprise 82-86.
i was with vaq 138 from 94-99 on the nimitz. ams3 shooter on my second cruise. this is great!!!!!! now i have a video to show everyone. no more charades in the living room w/ my thumb in the air. great job. i'm 31 now and have hearing issues but it was worth it. the LOUDEST bird on deck, oldest too... still flying last i heard! thank you again
Question: why are the green jackets the ones to be the closest to the airplane on take off ?

you enlist in the navy and become an airman(you'll be one of the guys in the colored shirts)
red=you load up plane with bombs ect.
purple=defuel/fuel the planes
green=hook up cables and reset them
white=operate catapult
yellow= i can't remember.
PS you don't get to choose if you become one but talk to a recuiter
UNClax990 3 years ago
i thought yellow was the guys that direct the planes on the flightdeck , and acts as launching commander. but correct me if i'm mistaken
folkertvankuijk 3 years ago
Yes, Yellow are called aircraft handlers and they are the ones who direct aircraft as they taxi around on the deck of a carrier.
rearden888 3 years ago
Red is also crash/salvage.
Rangerman9091 3 years ago
Corrections and a few colors you missed:
RED=ammo or fire fighter
PURPLE=fuel
GREEN=mechanics/jet mech, boat mech, catapolt mech,anything mech
BLUE=chocks and chains/aircraft handlers that tow and tie down aircraft. "yellow shirts" in training
YELLOW=aircraft directors/taxi the aircraft around deck. work closely w/"blue shirts"
BROWN=plane captains/ wash the jets, operate brakes during tow, ready the jet for flight.
WHITE=safety/medical/TROUBLESHOOTERS
markknofler 3 years ago 2
Collectively referred to as "Flight Deck Skittles".
Redshirts get up too early.
Grapes stink like JP5, so do their spaces and racks.
Greenies are insane to get that close to intakes.
Blueberries, aka "houdinis".
Yellowshirts wear yellow because they're always pissed off (usually about not being able to find any blueshirts).
Brownshirts, never around when you need to move a bird.
White, aka "flight deck pigeons" since all they do is wander around and shit on people.
