Heinlein? Who put him on the top of the list ! Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke and Frank Herbert top the list . And it doesn't matter in which order you put the top three really, Heinlein still comes fourth.
Well, that's one man's opinion. I have to say, Spider's one of the best writers ever, with a great sense for mixing science, tension, drama, and horrible, horrible puns together in a way that keeps you turning pages till you run out of them.
I like Spider, but there can be no rational comparison between he and RAH. While I have read much Heinlein and much Robinson and seldom been disappointed, I've no intention of ever reading Variable Star. For anybody to presume to coattail with the greatest SF writer of all time is patently absurd. Sorry Spider. I know you likely did this with the best of intentions and even deference, but the thing seems some abominable Frankenstein's monster to me.
