I'm a hard rock/metal listener, but I love seeing the videos of these old country players. When people discuss "greatest guitarists" how these guys are left out of the discussion is mind blowing.
Put a stack of effects on Chet Atkins doing Orange Blossom Special, and people would lose their minds about how awesome a player he is.
Doc is not completely blind. I went back stage at the Paramount, he was touring with mandolin genius Dave Grisman. There was a buffet laid out on a counter, and Doc surprised me when he said, "What's over there that's good. It looks like there is some really nice cheese", then walked over and piled up a plate. I almost asked him how much he could see, but that would have been insensitive and rude. Doc is a great man, and as kind and generous a Christian gentleman can be. I love Doc Watson. :-)
@thebeauhooligan Back in 1970, I was hanging out with Doc and his son Merle and we'd gone out for coffee and after about 20 minutes, Doc pulled out a pocket watch-flipped it open...and it was in Braille! He laid his index and middle fingers over the face, and said "We better be getting back in a couple of minutes..." I have never seen anything like this before or SINCE!! Doc is so amazing...
rock fan 363 you must be a mentally unstable human being. otherwise why would you say that about this music. i hope that you are going to get on meds. ma, pa, help this poor child overcome his difficulties in his life so that he may be reajusted to a normal human being.

Now Shut The Fuck UP and Listen to the Damn music you twat.
This is just bloody fantastic....so much talent packed into two people and what a joy to hear them play together ...amazing...sent shivers up my spine.
Brian Zetzer , eat your heart out, here are the kings, probably where you got your nothin doin no melody fast picken from and tried to add to it , but did'nt work out.!!!!
@engraver41 Spell his name correctly please - it's Setzer. Also, look for a Youtube of Chet Atkins talking about Gretsch guitars and hear what he has to say about Brian Setzer. I trust his opinion a bit more than yours.
One of my most treasured recordings - an LP no less - is of Doc and Chet together. Have to look this song up - is it "Dill Pickle Rag"? If you close your eyes, you can almost see and hear them sitting on someone's porch, playing and just having a wonderful time. I'm glad these two fine gentlemen got paid well for their performing, but I bet they'd do it for free if they had to. They sound like they enjoy it that much.
i heard doc use to come down to winston-salem and play on the street with a can when he was young, any truth to that? nothing fine than hearing him, vassar and earl playing that bluegrass threesome.
hey guys, fans of Doc Watson should definitely check out Kent Gustavson's new book, "Blind But Now I See, The Biography of Music Legend Doc Watson " @ his Facebook page, "Doc Watson Book".
Doc wasn't born blind - he lost his sight around - eleven? or a bit younger. So he's seen plenty of expressions.
Ragtime Annie - didn't Scott Joplin tell us that it was never right to play ragtime fast. I have a recording of this and slowed it down to 85% - sounds even better.
I wish that its audio was Hi-Fi quality. Sounds like it came from a VHS video cassette recorded at SLP/EP speed on the linear audio track. If anyone knows how to acquire a great copy of the original performance, I sure would like to know.
@dmonks40 That "sweep pick" is something Chet got from a classical player. He altered it a little and made it his own. Fingerpickers refer to it as, "The Super Lick"
y'all do know Doc Watson is blind, right? Why does he need to change his facial expression if he's never seen anyone else's expression his whole life? Buncha geniuses around here...
@jmooreguitar Sorry but you have no idea what you are talking about. Doc was born with an eye infection and was totally blind before his first birthday.
@OutOfElmo he lost his sight at an early age. besides facial expression have nothing to do with sight. dont believe me?close your eyes and i ll jick you in the fuckn nuts, you think youll make a facial expression. its called playing with music with all your feelings dipshit
Well its hard to flatpick without a pick don't ya think? Chet was playing fingerstule. And you ever try to flatpick a classical guitar? The string tension is lighter than a steel string so you don't get as much deflection.
Boy if were ever two guys who made difficult guitar playing look effortless, it's Chet and Doc. What I love about these three videos is how much it looks like Chet is having.
ya, its available on the internet, type in reflections chet atkins rapidshare and a link to download it will pop up off a website (you'll have to copy the link into your browser), or torrent it, or buy it

I am trying to remember here... On Reflections, there's a classic rag, Dill Pickles, as I recall, that's based on an original classic by the East Texas Serenaders 'Three in One Two Step'. Beaumont Rag came from that source too, probably. Also, their tag end onto Goodnight Waltz came from the Leake County Revelers Wednesday Night Waltz. Chet was my grandpas favorite guitar picker. On another note, when I was about 4 my grandma sent dad and I a cassette of "Remembering Merle." We played it over and over until it was worn out. Another favorite from grandma was Doc Watson's "Songs for Little Pickers." Froggy Went A Courtin' is my favorite on that one :)
This is from the old vinyl called Reflections now on CD. The Doc Watson tune is called Rag Time Annie, and is a classic of his from one of his earliest albums. Chets version of Black Mountain Rag was put out at the time Doc made a splash on the folk scene with a flat pick version of it. It is on Youtube so grab a look. Doc blew the folk scene apart. He is mighty fine (excellent) finger picker too. One of his live versions of Sitting On Top of the World (Open d tuning) is THE best.
