There is nothing wrong with being completely proud as Lao-Issan because all of our great grand parents were culturally and linguistically Lao who have taught us to eat sticky rice, Pa Deark, Koy and Lap. When you listen to Lum every day, eat sticky rice, Koy and Lap every day, you can not be more than Lao-Issan 200% can't you? So proud being a Lao-Issan!

I would say yes. It's the same, not just speaking, it includes culture, dressing and foods. But the new generations are mixed with lao and thai. May be I am just too young to understand and hope someone else can give you more details. KhonlaoUSA

The terminologies of Thai Essan language and Lao language have been used interchangeably both both people. Lao people in Laos usually call Lao-Essan according to what they have been instructed in school. Why do the Lao people in Laos call people who reside in Northeastern Provinces in Thailand Lao-Essan? Acccording to many history textbooks written about the Lao-Issan, they trace back to a history of the forced resettlement occured during Franco-Siam treaties of 1893 and 1904.

A spoken language in Northeastern provinces in Thailand is identical to Lao langauge spoken in Laos, in USA, in Cannada, France and other parts of the world where Lao people live in. A written Thai language is not identical, but it is so substantially similar that most Lao people can read Thai language without having to formally learn a Thai language in school because of its substantial similarity. I can also read it even though I have never learned it formally.

@BehindTheWall1 Laos and Issan Thailand use to be one nation. as recently as 1800 during the colonial France government gave the many part of Issan to Siam so they could easily continue robe the Laos nation.

That why right now Issan people continue speak lao but use Thai alphabet instead, but write the way laos do.

Yes, most Essan people are Lao ( Before the Frence gave 16 provices to Thailand). But Most Thai Essan might disagree with us on that.

I love Lao music and will support Lao artist but Lao music need to come up with their own original songs not base on the same song and change some pf the words. Lao music is beautiful if the artists would just add more instruments instead of one man band.

Both Thai and Lao needs to respect each other and help each others.
