Amazing stuff. Is there any chance you'll make your version of "I wonder to myself" by Tommy? The quality is not so good, 3,500 views on Youtube, it's simply such a gem, ahead of its time, I'm almost sure you would agree it is, your version of it will help pick it up and I'm also sure would be great and feel just like it should feel, just like what it is - a modern song from the 60's or later, from one of the very best
I gotta say you play guitar like a BOSS! ha. i wanna learn how to do wht u did at the end. with the fast finger picking and picking out one rhythm notes too. it was pretty interesting.
Damn it, its 1:20 in the AM and I just have to listen one more time! What a find! Well maybe just two more …Needless to say, I love your playing. Thanks!
Reminded me of my old friend George, in the 80's, loved his synthetic heroin. It eventually proved to be genetically altering and he died from it. Sad, but life often is. R.I.P. George and Tommy.
Man....Good Stuff... like Sleepy Jon Esties and Homeslick James. All know, you can't play the blues untill you paid your dues. Thanks for posting, I enjoyed this very much.
Thats some fine pickin Brother. It must really suck to be able to do that anytime you want to. Hey, get yerself up here to the "Waterfront Blue Festivle" in Portland Oregon, the second seat in the house of blues. And hey, you wont ever need a motel room as long as ya can hit that string a lick..........
you are simply the best ... when I listen to your music I understand what it would mean to listen to old country blues records..... without all the noises & scratches!!!
Nothing like a nip of alchol based jelled cooking fuel for a morning eye opener. The first time I heard Tommy Johnson's original 78 rpm version I wanted to go down to the root cellar and build a guitar out of an old wooden cigar box and play the blues... It's a good thing I didn't.
Seriously, your playing style reminds me a lot of Sam Chatmon of the Mississippi Sheiks who played with a similarly elegant right hand touch to the strings.
I live in Michigan....dad came from WV..found a thousand cans or more in our old Michigan Basement...this was 1960 to 1970..he eventually enjoyed some cheap white wine...lived till he was 56...he was a good hearted man..taught me how to throw a curve ball..wasn't easy on a wooden leg...true story...I miss my old man!!!
I learned ormusbaxter's version, but there is still much missing compared to how Tommy Johnson plays it. A lesson would be great, either of your version or tommy johnson's.
I love this! The only tab I can find is so simplified its driving me crazy. Any chance of you tabbing this out for us? I'd seriously be willing to pay you to write this out for me.
just one curiosity. The verse where you sing "i drank so much canned heat it set down in my legs..." is it in the original record you (lucky one :) ) own? In the version i have (ain't sure which one it's an mp3) it does not sing it.
Thanks also for showing your hands. I learned it even if light years away from your technique and feeling.
it's shocking to think what people used to drink, from reading the More info button text that canned heat dont sound to nice. that must be the 1930's version of people drinking Meths in the 21st century.
Very great classic mississippi delta blues/ragtime style to your playing dude! Great cover of an old classic about the virtues of guzzling "Pink Lady" aka good ole Sterno!
man, i've already commented, but i've got to say it again, this is incredible! i'm learning this one off the original, and have to say that your arrangement is the best i've heard....don't get me wrong, i think tommy is the master, but you are about as close as it gets to the original
I never heard of Tommy Johnson, but I'm glad I ran across this video, I found it on accident, because the first time I listened to it my whole body started tingling from my head to my toes. I can't stop listing to this version of this song. Thanks for uploading this video. You made my day! I only like music when the musician gives their entire soul to it, like you have. Thanks again. Keep it up!
I have wanted to comment on this for a while. This is so close to Tommy Johnson's it is scary. Im a big Tommy Johnson fan and you did a outstanding job on this. Congrats.
Super! Funny the beautiful tune is very gay in regarding the sad subject matter! Thanks for the lengthy info added-loved the learning and hearing, this day!
You have caught the essence of Johnson's singing style. Nice guitar work, as usual. Loved the ending riff. A medical footnote for anyone looking for a cheap thrill: Don't try consuming canned heat at home. It is deadly.(literally)
Always enjoyable - thanks- also appreciate the history. Can't imagine anyone drinking that that stuff. - The old Supertone sounds really good. I have an older 3/4 size but it needs some work.
great job, as always. i'd love a tab of this, you've really inspired me to learn this one. tommy johnson is eerie good. much like your covers! 5 stars.
Thanks for the kind words. I don't have tab for my version but I know you can get it at the Stefan Grossman site. He tabbed it in one of his books and also Rory Block done a lesson on it (I believe that one is available through Homespun Tapes).
can you do a cover of "i wonder to myself" by tommy johnson? all the rechordings suck and its a fun song to play.

Thank you very much daddystovepipe,
you perform a good calm authentic sound and singing. Not superficial imitating but makin' it genuine from the inside of your soul. Thanks a lot!
I was searching the origin of the name of Canned Heat L.A. band and you explained it much. These lads were great fans of those 1920s bluesmen.
