My comment was about the ethos that the right to bear arms is regarded as a freedom, when in fact it is the opposite. mitch, that bit about UK gun crime is pure NRA propaganda. We were actually disarmed in the 1920s, not 1999 as they tell you. The per capita gun deaths in the USA are 27 times those in the UK. That is an enormous difference. Half or more of gun crimes in the UK involve imitation weapons, not real guns. Of course the victims normally assume a gun is real.

@derekcolman full-bore self-loading rifles were legal up until the Hungerford shootings in 1987, full bore pistols were legal up until the Dunblane shootings in 1996. Not many people realised because they were fringe sports (I had friends & family that did so I have experience we both) but we had lots of full power weapons and not much gun crime. Now we have few guns (shotguns) and more shootings. Not saying the two facts are related but they are facts (check the national crime survey)

The increase in gun crime is mainly accounted for by the use of fake, replica, or BB guns to commit crime. In the UK the definition of a gun crime is any crime in which the victim believed that they were threatened by a gun, even if it was just a banana in a paper bag.

I know this is old, but I just came across it looking for another incident where someone was shot & killed at a church. Anyway I had to say this is a very sad situation. The officer seems very remorseful, apologetic even. She's a believer of Christ as well as a good samaritan because she put her own life in danger to save the lives of those who may have been merely strangers to her. And all 'some' of us care to do is leave negative comments. I am appalled by that. She is a heroic woman.

The shooter's biggest nemesis was his own irrational passion and lack of planning. Had he acted more the assassin & less the terrorist, i.e., chosen a single target, placed himself in an inconspicuous location, and chosen a weapon based more on target removal than dramatic effect, he could have accomplished his overall objective, and more likely have gotten away with it.
