I'm using Schaller Security Locks ever since my guitar kissed the floor (I had these Warwick Locks installed). Warwick does a great job in building basses and bass amps, but they should stop producing these locks.
No offence to the poster, but this looks like an installation error to me. The Warwick strap locks are very reliable and work perfectly. Due to their design there's simply no way they can fall out like that unless;
i) they were suffering from a manufacturing defect, or
ii) the screw holding the button to the instrument wasn't screwed in far enough to allow the pin to secure properly. I'd wager on the second of those possibilities.
@chuckst0nes hello, just out of curiosity and because i never leave anything to chance i thought I'd try out your scenario No. 2! (cos i still have these horrid things on my shelf) The screw is as far down as possible inside the supplied strap button and they still come as off, as i thought. So that leaves your No. 1scenario.. which is of course the problem. I wouldn't expect every single one they ever made to not work, but for me, unless a Straplock is 100% safe I'm NOT buying it.
@jcyeaful that's nonsense. This guitar came off as described, while standing fell to the ground and hit the side of my pedalboard. If I was sat down it wouldn't have fell. This is for demonstration purposes. They would even worse if they'd designed them to only work when under some sort of tension. Haha.
@ibanezplayer23 i wouldn't expect anything less from a guy who plays an ibanez! LOL.. is it all pretty? with bright sickly colours and a pointy headstock? get a proper guitar and start leaving adult & constructive comments. ;-)
@azfryguy normally i don't but.. just to reiterate My Opinion, i don't particularly like the way they look and sound, for me. And will 'bag on' peoples comments that are quite frankly childish. I'm trying to do people a favor here and perhaps save this from happening to others guitars.
@azfryguy well, yea i guess i am. I'm usually up for that sort of stuff, made a pretty cool looking aluminium pedalboard and didn't make little straplocks!! i wish i had believe me! Also some of the cheapest locks, 2 piece black plastic ones are more affective than warwick ones and cost only 4 or 5 quid.
looks like you're better off not even using those strap locks. Thanks for showing this to everyone, i just got ernie ball strap locks and they work just fine.
You need it more if the strap button is on the back because the weight leans forward, plus you also have the other end like on all guitars.. and i think pretty much every guitarist has experienced that coming off at some point.. and once is one time too many. Anyway its kinda irrelevant where it is... you're buying 'strapLOCKS'.
@JMfanboy Exactly, I've put up a video showing just that. I don't understand why people would throw away money on overpriced straplocks that can break, having just a washer that doesn't fit over the topside is so much more reliable and nearly free.
Well it seems that warwicks "straplocks" Sucks... Thx 4 putting this vid on Youtube... i would have bought them if i wouldn't have seen this... now i got schallers security lock instead they work Excellent, Never failed... although im sorry for that dent i your guitar... if i were u i would call to Warwick and ask the how the F**K they can produce that shit!
I'm glad... Schallers have never failed for me either. I did email Warwick but they never replied, and i was so angry that i just wanted to forget it and move on but thought the least i could do is tell the world on youtube :-) they should be designed with absolute fail safe, otherwise its pointless isn't it??! They're there to protect. Cheers MrColdhellifyer.
So I just changed to Warwick straplocks on another instrument of mine and had the exact same problem as detailed in this video... because I used the original screws that came with the bass and not the screws included with the locks. The extra size of the non-Warwick screw prevents the Warwick peg from going far enough to allow the bearings to lock into place. All I had to do was file down the end of the lock peg (about 5 minutes total for both pegs) and the locks now work perfectly.
Ran out of characters the first time :-) The screws that came with the straplocks were smaller than the screws that were already in the bass - as such, the new screws were too small for the existing holes and I wanted to use the stock holes.
I have got the same ones!!! I had the same problem.
That is until I realised that all I needed to do was srew the screw in further as the screw gets in the way of the locking mech!! If you dont screw in in all the way...
I've been using the Warwick strap locks with my Warwick basses for years and they're incredibly solid. I'm a very active player and they've stood up to everything. It sucks that that happened to your guitar, but I've seen all sorts of straplocks fail including Schallers and Dunlops. The moral of the story is to check that stuff every time you get ready to use it, and that's a lesson that I've learned the hard way as well.
Hmm.. shame we have to check such a device, seeing that its very own existence relys on people wanting to protect their beloved/expensive instruments..? ?
The last thing i'm thinking of mid song is if my straplocks are gonna fail!! haha
exactly, why would we want to take the risk? the sicken thing is i thought, i must get round to buying some locking nuts before my strap comes off. and a set of Warwick's later, dadaa....DINK!

Thanks for posting this video! My Warwick straplocks aren't as bad as yours appear to be, but that just adds to the danger. They don't fail for a while, but once I relax my vigilance, that's when it seems to happen. The worst occurred during a show; luckily I caught my bass, so it was not damaged (only my pride was hurt). :) I reported it to Warwick and they sent me a replacement set of locks (which turned out to be just as crappy as the initial ones).
guys why the fuck spend money on some expensive locks?? i took some wire, put the strap onto my guitar and wrapped the wire around the button thats sticking out from the strap and it wont even move a bit. u can jump, run, kick,or fling the guitar around your neck n do fuckin hoola hoops with it and the strap doesnt come off
I think its your button thats messed up. Mines perfectly fine. Used to for like 8 months alreadi no problem. Except for the part that the screw of the pin goes loose and all, but as usual it happens to all strap locks. My lock messed up my strap (schecter one)and now I have to onli use warwick for it. I hope it doesnt mess up my dunlop straps this time.
Well i'm glad yours have worked fine but do we all really want to take the risk? When the engineering tolerence is so small. I can see how schaller works, plus putting some loctite on the nut. no problems.
I am definitely not going to use warwick for my next guitar. I think I'll go for schaller or dunlop loks. And yes warwick is risky from what I've heard.
How long did i use the straplocks for..? about a day or two, one rehearsal i think. It could have been even worse as my guitar landed an inch away from my Electro Harmonix HOG not a cheapy pedal. i think the button system is inefficient too as they're so easy to press & release regardless of it actually working.
i've seen another cheap alternative, black plastic circular device that has an oval hole on a disc that twists. seems to work very well, and cheap too.
I would do the same thing if the straps don't fall off. My friends strap wasnt on properly n it just dropped in chipped off at the bottom of the guitar
I agree. I had these fail on me while gigging and my headstock hit the ground (tarmac) and now my bass has a nasty gash on it. I changed all my strap locks to Schaller.
Well.. 'just broken ones'?? I now have a broken £600 guitar! There's nothing there to see that looks broken, the tolerances in the design is obviously micro between it working or not, its impossible to see.(so any slight inconsistency in the manufacturing process or wear n' tear means the difference between a guitar hitting the floor or not).'Schallers' you can see exactly how they work, using a pull n slide system including a nut (which may need some 'loctite' on the thread for extra security).
I Just got a Parker two weeks ago and I'm looking for new straplocks for it, man.. thanks a million for share this, a very powerful reason to keep away from warwick "security locks".
Thanks dude, a pleasure to let people know. My £600 guitar is now probably worth £400 thanks to Warwick. Its quite a chunk, so deep it'd take a long time to build up the lacker, wait for it to dry/sink etc. And i cant do without it that long. Even if people have warwick ones that work. The design is floored as its so easy to accidentally push the button and release it. unlike Schaller which is a pull and slide realse system.
So im pretty knew to the whole strap lock thing.... Do you have to drill a new set of holes for the strap lock? or will it fit in the stock holes. I have a Epiphone LP Standard and Epiphone Sg Custom, if that helps.
They should fit without having to drill new holes, i dont have an epiphone but i'm sure they're the same as gibson. The screw may be slightly different lengths, but thats not really a problem.
Very informative! I bought the Schallers and this morning (after preparation of the formerly drilled out holes that were too big for the screw provided...had to fill in with LockTite glue and toothpicks)...I have managed to get one end of the strap on...but not the other. I think the strap is too thick...I'll need to get another strap, but I think the Schallers are gonna be fine...you just need room to screw down the washer and nut for security (this is where the 'thinner' strap is needed)
No - since all they would do most likely is send me a set of the very same locks that failed. So, I just put the schallers on - no issues since... No big deal to me...an inconvenience, yes, but in the bigger picture, a few bucks on strap locks is a minor issue. I still love my Warwick basses...
thats fair enough.. unfortunately for me it took a chunk out of my Gibson Les Paul. I'm sure they make great guitars, havent got a lot of experience with them myself. They should stick to guitars!
i did, i sent them an email and they didn't have the decency to get back to me! i sent them the link to this in the email. i should have taken it further really. The shop i bought them at had another thing going on with a customer that complained about a Warwick guitar stand that claimed not to stain 'white paint work'. and well it did, on an expensive LP. Warwick werent really interested, as far as i'm aware.
yup it is indeed! And they havent even replied to my email of complaint! i should have filmed the dent as well really. doh! (i might do that actually)
