but.. why would you fill the holes with gravel around the posts? moisture will kill the posts within few years. usually you would wanna use post shoes. or at least fill the whole hole with concrete and dip the posts in a really oily painting or something.
2nd rate way to support a deck at best, although generally accepted in many areas of the country.Footings should be poured to or above grade. In video it appears that he has only 12" of concrete in footing at best. Concrete to post brackets(hot dipped galvanized) should be inserted in footing. post should sit on and be attached to this bracket. you are building a deck not a fence! Beam should rest on post attached with a post to beam Simpson bracket. Therefore , weight of deck bears on posts.
Those posts should be notched with the beams sitting on top, not bolted to the sides. Now the entire weight of the deck and occupants is relying on the shear strength of the bolts.
Something I didn't quiteget here.... does he put the posts IN the concrete or does he stack it ON the concrete then fills it with gravel? I would assume he puts the post into the concrete and fills up the rest of the hole... like building a backyard fence... right?
i wish yall would stfu bout this video if i a black guy was talkin and said that and a white guy came up wouldnt nobody have nuffin to say God! he wrks at lowes he gonna do some manual labor sumtime in his career
I found this video horrible and racist. There is a scene where the white man says "that requires some manual labor" and in walks a black man. This is a racist. Everyone knows that spics are used for manual labor and niggers are lazy.
@Blackoutx86 Are you serious????? Your just looking for something to complain about... maybe your the racist one. If the black guy was mexican, would you complain?
ah hahahaha....classic...manual labour......mind it does seem a little on the over kill side of things....whats he putting on it?....a challenger tank?....
It's crazy that people will find a way to hate and complain on a simple how to video. Well, here's some advice...grow up! To do that, you'll need: Maturity, Kindness, Common Decency...and some safety glasses.
You guys are a bunch of wankers, cause a black guy happens to be the labourer straight away you arrogant & racials pricks think that. Well at least he has the skills & happens to be acknowlege world wide thru this programme more than what you racial pricks think.
PS: This is a fantastic video thanks for this as I happen to install my decking.
Help. I am planning on creating a free standing deck with a pergola around a hot tub. my hot tub is 34" high. The deck will be completely wrapped around the hot tub. I was considering installng footings to the ground surface and then brackets for 6"X6" post. The post will serve as the framing for the deck and the post for the composit columns of the pergola. I am concerned that the post will not be strudy enough to hold the deck and the pergola's lintels, rafters and purlins. Any advise?
@DavidLacrosse11 Concrete never completely dries. The moisture in it is just like burying the post in dirt. It will rot Setting it on the footing and filling it with gravel allows for good drainage and will make the post last much longer.
they give you a list of things to buy...landscape fabrick, treated lumber, auger digger, post level, shovel, post hole digger, cement mix, wheel barrel, string, gravel, pencil, and square, gloves, chalk line, line level, circular saw, drill, with drill bits, 3lb hammer, dusk mask, carriage bolts, washer, and nuts, socket wrench, and sockets, screws, and nails, clamps, AND a reciprocating saw,and a level...too much lumber involved, you don't need that much lumber for a deck..I know..suspicous
it's not "in" the concrete, it's ON the concrete... they are footings, he even says wait till it cures, then place the posts into the holes on the concrete... it's so that way the posts rest on a solid base rather then soft dirt.
It's not recommended to set treated wood in concrete. The concrete leaches the chemicals out of the wood causing the wood to rot. With 12 posts set to code depth, there will be no wobble.
@wfbrown1958 my friend didn't bother treating his wood posts before he set them in concrete. All fine and dandy .. that is until our friend Bessy came by with her doberman and that pup whipped out his weiner shnitzel and squirted the bejooters out of the main supporting poll. let's just say the whole deck collapsed in 4.2 seconds and we all had egg on our face!!
I have to agree. I only wish we had a Lowes closer to my home. I am forced to shop at Home Depot because of it, but have always prefered Lowes when I am close to one.
One MAJOR thing you should have added to the video is to have people call their local diggers hotline before digging ANY holes near the home. It is possible that water, electric or gas lines may be in the vicinity of where you plan to dig post holes for your deck. Better safe than sorry.
I was talking about this video, not the first one. At a minimum, they should have reminded viewers before digging. Not all who watched the first two videos catch everything and remember it, such as myself. Better to be repetitive than dead. Ok?
If you don't have the brains to think to call before hand without a video telling you to do so, please don't build something such as a deck. It's not safe for you or the people that are going to be using it. Stick to birdhouses...

what if he said, we have to make sure our deck is square, so this will require some math. (then an asian guy walks on)

I don't like that gravel in the hole shit. Just use concrete to fill the entire hole.....much sturdier.

Is there a way you can build a deck without having to dig holes in the ground?
Bfab129 6 months ago
can a deck be built like a house with a foundation on the sides then use metal bars To span across

Do the posts sink into the cement, to the bottom of the holes? Didn't seem like they pushed them into the cement much
bradkrit 9 months ago
@bradkrit No, they sit on top of the cement footer. That way if you need to do a repair on a post, it's not encased in cement.

So you let the cement harden then place the post ontop, or put the post in with the cement and let it harden to the post?
