  • Be warned - under Windows, the BIOS installs a Backdoor / Trojan.

It is simply to deactivate if you know how to do.

You can edit the bios chip, too and remove Computrace.

If you use Linux, this technology has no function.

  • Say I was a laptop stealer, And I just want a laptop, not any bank accounts or log in details. I could just disable the wireless Or just install Linux or a different OS immediately. Me knowing this I wouldn't even turn it on....

  • For those who might be interested, here’s an Expert Talk: How to turn your notebook into a brick ? blog.ts.fujitsu.com/face2fujitsu/?p=1853

  • i cant be software, it has to be pure hardware, since u cannot access the bios if this message pops up.

  • It's a combination of both. The HW is Intel's Anti-Theft chipset which is being built into the motherboards of new laptops. The SW is Absolute's Computrace or LoJack for Laptops, which exchanges a key-pair with the anti-theft chipset and manages the anti-theft technology. You need both a) A laptop with the technology and b) Computrace or LoJack for Laptops.

  • i'd like to know if this is Software or pure hardware ??

if it's Software... then it fails if the user reinstall windows without going on the internet..

  • @ Fusionicon, WAY TOO EXPENSIVE, its kinda the same idea as gold in the ocean, were every square kilometre of the ocean has around 500kg of pure gold atoms. Its nice and all, but at the end of the day, you lose more than you gain.

  • Unless is something hard coded on the chips/hardware, I don't see why it can't be eventually hacked.

  • would be coded into a chip, maybe even the bios. HMM, might just be able to change the bios chip.

  • I think that given enough time I can figure out a way to bypass it. I wouldn't get into the hardware because that'd be just too hard and so not worth it, or trying to access the system after it's been locked down. The weak point is between theft and lockdown were the system has to rendevouz with Home Base to take its marching orders.

  • When it is installed, Absolute Software's Computrace or LoJack for Laptops registers as the chipset management application and they exchange an encrypted key pair. At this point no other application can manage the chipset. To receive a poison pill the device does have to rendezvous. However, almost all stolen laptops reconnect with the internet. Plus, as mentioned in the video @32 sec, there's also a countdown timer - So if the laptop fails to rendezvous within a set time it will lock anyway.

  • Ahhhh... I like it. Very smart. I did notice the countdown timer before. So it means that in order to break in you have between time zero and autoblock time to think of something. Certainly you need to develop a software to feign the LoJack signature to take over the hardware. Once that is done then the countdown/rendezvous pressure is off I think. If the HD is encoded and pass protected then I'd replace the HD or boot up from another device that has the software to feign the LoJack signal.

  • At any rate it is not a job for your usual burglar. Even with an expert, the probability could be very low if, beside the countdown timer, you have other security layers to deal with (HDD/BIOS passwords), because it becomes a matter of time. Certainly not worth the effort unless the laptop has your final project presentation and it accidentally got locked. :D

I think the best tool against hackers/burglars is not in making it impossible, but in making it just not worth the trouble.

  • Problem you have is if the thief never intends on Hooking it backup to the internet there is no way to lock the system. That's the only flaw.

  • oh wow this is great

  • wow really nice to do this remotely ;)

    how abt gps trackin ;p

  • Computrace, which you need to use the Intel Anti-Theft Technology, has full geolocation tracking capability, either via GPS or WiFi Triangulation. Although not covered in the video, if the device leaves a geographic area, a poison pill can be dispatched via an SMS message to the device.

  • damn huh.

    awesome feature :)

  • agreed

    lol

    anywho great video.

  • Why don`t you just put an un removable gps that if some one tries to remove it. The laptop is damaged. And the devices can be tracked.
