I think this song stands above the rest of this album not only because it has a nice Orbison quality to it, but because it wasn't originally a part of the joke.
There is at least one version of this dating from 1970 kicking around and it shows up on most of the Neil Young rarities compilations that have circulated for years. Google "KQED TV rehearsal" and "1970" and "Neil Young" and you should find some five or six disc homemade compilations of rarities for download.
I wouldn't call this rockabilly, it's more doo wop than anything. btw, this is funny as hell, with neil just kinda popping up in every scene. where is he... oh there he is! great stuff.
Cool video, especially because of Neil's I've-been-on-a-three-day-drunk appearance. And yes, Trans(love to see a modern version of it) and Everybody's Rockin' are both wonderful albums completely ignored by Neil's fans(I being one). Go figure. P.S. David Geffen is the slowest man in the music business!
HERE HERE... 80's neil is so underated.. people think it's nonsense.
hawks&doves, reactor, trans, everybodysrockin, oldways, landingonwtaer, life, thisnotesforyou, eldorado, freedom.. how can all this amazing material be underated??..
No acounting for taste, but I like it cos it's not a typical Neil Young song. Plus it was kind of a 'Fuck You' to Geffen records who wanted him to do an ordinary folk rock album and he decided to try something different ( for him )
As I heard it, his record company insisted he record a rock n roll album (rock n roll in the context of the 1980s, or whenever he recorded this) so he recorded a proper 1950s-style rock n roll album to give them the big "fuck you, go and market that" and to school them in music. Legend.
@Broadsword95 absolutly what i heard also. A big middle finger to Geffen. They hated it the dumbass critics. This album is pure classic. I think it is one of his very best. The songs are so short that they need to add about 10 more great oldie covers. Goes to show you how diverse talent he has. This song was written over 20 yrs before he recorded it. If he was performing back in the 50's he would have been huge.
Everytime I see him I'm hoping he does it, but he never does.
I've never thought of Neil Young as being an especially humorous kind of guy. But this song just shows he can do anything.
And as much as I initially liked "Sample and Hold" the single from his previous album, THAT song really hasn't held up well. Sounds like an unholy cross between Peter Frampton, Styx and Kraftwerk.
But how can you NOT like "Wonderin'"? Think I'll watch it again!
@librarianeric Before introducing Elliot Roberts (then Geffen's business partner) to Young, Joni Mitchell apparently said "You gotta meet Neil ... He's the only guy who's funnier than you are." Maybe Canadian humor (humour?) is a little different, so it catches us off guard.
I loved this is '83 and still love it. David Geffen sued Neil over this, claiming he made this as a joke and it "wasn't representative of Neil Young or commercially viable." Geffen has done much for the music world but in this case he had something large stuck up his ass. As I recall that while Wonderin' and the LP didn't break any sales records, they did all right thank you. Not to mention a freakin' HILARIOUS video.
Funny that you say that...he looks a bit twisted like Jack here! Great song...I think Neil Young has performed about every good genre of music existing...
Neil and the best vid ever....Thanks Canadian Bro!

1:23 - 2:08 favorite part of song. The video doesn't matter as much as the music in my opinion, this is a good song.
