It is natural for him to do that during the courtship process before the actual breeding. And if your female Betta has VERTICAL BARS that means she is willing to breed, if she's showing HORIZONTAL STRIPES it mean she not willing to breed.

I'm trying to breed my betta at the moment, I condition it and feed it live food. Also i placed a smalle tank inside the big one so the female and male can see each other. They been in there for about a month and a half now but when i take my female out she would always chase the male and bite him. Does anyone know whats wrong with her and how i can get them to breed?

It's likely you may not have a female at all, especially if 'she' is chasing him. All too often I see 'females' up for sale that are clearly short finned males, this is done for the main reason that true females have little colour pigmentation compared to males, and these just wouldn't sell as well...

@Babylindah I tried that too, and it might be 'cause

1. the male's not ready (must have COMPLETED bubble nest)

2. The male HATES your other female fish

try washing out some leaves from a live plant (in clean water, leave it for a while to be sure ) and leave it to float on the water. This MIGHT help encourage the fighter fish to build a nest.

let me know something srbmarine, I have a Blue and Turquoise Male and two females, I stuck them togther to mate, and my Male absolutely tore the crap out of the female, she looks really battered and bruised, is it normal for males to be that agressive towards females and is there any certain time they need to be mated up, i'm new to tropical fish and have not got a clue, cheers.

Yes unfortunatly that can happen in most cases. What I usually do is separate the male from the females until both are sexually mature and the female showing signs that she is gravid / egg bound. I then have a heavily planted tank that the male is in and 'show' him the female, this can be done in a floating jar. keep them like this for a day or so until the male has built a bubblenest and looks interested. The female can then be introduced. After mating it's best to remove the female

Yea she's a big ol' girl. She's about 3 years which is good going for a female, and one I raised myself.
