They recently announced that he will be playing one of Rachel's dads on Glee. I couldn't help but giggle. If you guys aren't familiar with Glee, Rachel is played by Lea Michele who was Tateh's Little Girl in the OBC of Ragtime. I love when peoples' careers intertwine.
we are singing this song for our spring concert in my chorus!!! and this is the version my teacher played for us in class before we started learning it :D
Wow! I sang ' Make Them Hear You' without hearing this interpretation about 2 months ago! Wish I'd have heard it before then. It would have given me a better understanding of the song.
I heard Brian Stokes Mitchell for the very first time on Rosie ODonnell show years ago when Ragtime first opened. I was around 21. Within a few months, I bought my first plane ticket to New York, and Ragtime was my first broadway show ever. That's how amazing and inspirational his voice is.
Oh. My. Goodness. I just love this song! In my ninth grade choir concert we did a broadway medley where everyone got a solo! This was the first song that was sung and I got a solo for the part "And I could not put down my sword when justice was my right..." Oh heavens! Listening to this makes me so happy! I love it.
i just recently discovered Brian. Where have I been? An example of perfect vocal technique. His throat is so open , you could drive a truck through it. And a nice and handsome guy to boot. He could be Obama's brother. WOW !
Just heard this today. I thought Shoshana Beans little 5 second rendition was great, but goddamn this is powerful and beautiful. I wish more teenagers appreciated musical theatre.
Anyone else who even attempts to play Coalhouse Walker Jr. Can only clean up after Mitchell, because he swept the floor with all of them, the best baritone I've ever heard
I worked at a theater camp for children 8-16 over the summer, and this was one of the songs they learned. I got tears in my eyes every time they sang it.
A stunning performance! I don't necessarily think Alan Cumming was undeserving for "Cabaret" but Brian Stokes Mitchell's performance in "Ragtime" is one of the most powerful in the history of musical theatre.
@TheatreFilmBuff Agreed! Alan Cumming's Master Of Ceremonies was great, and if I were a Tony voter, I would vote for him any other year, but Brian Stokes Mitchell just inhabits this role, and deserves to be held in the same esteem as legendary performers like Rex Harrison, Ethel Merman, Robert Preston, or Zero Mostel for his performance in "Ragtime". I envy anyone who saw him perform this role live.
Mr. Mitchell makes it seem effortless as he sings, but this is absolutely flawless! Brings tears to my eyes each time I hear it. He made me hear him!!!!
I agree with your description... In my opinion he is the only one with a voice for this song... SO much depth and power in it... So that it truly "MAKES THEM HEAR YOU"!
What a thrill! My family doubted me but I insisted that we had to see "Ragtime" on Broadway. He and other cast members " blew us away". Thanks for a tremendous experience. It's one of my favorites.
I'm just going to point out that Mr. Mitchell sustains that last note perfectly. When listening to clips of Mr. Darrington, at the end of the song, you can hear the little breath for air. And the tone of their voices are different. I'm not saying he's bad, because he's great, he's just not QUITE as good as Mr. Mitchell, IMO.
we are singing this song along with others from ragtime and i absolutlety love this song! it actually sounds alot like colors of the wind from pocohontas
@wuddahninja my choir did this song last year for our Fine Arts Festival and the Black history program and god....frankly, we should be shot. So many missed notes on purpose...
I personally loved the song and so did like....5 others. My choir makes screeching monkeys sound like a good chorus. Thats how bad some of them are. So in answer to your question, no, they hated the song. I love doing songs from ragtime.
@LTHSFanpire well people in my school are blind. I loved this song because it was, well, powerful. Very Powerful. but all the students in my class hear is (from the words of a pompous choir member) some stupid old song.
'Teach every child to raise his voice'... I was never taught that by anyone. Most of the people I've met in my life told me to shut up and tag along. Even my parents. But eventually I learnt not to 'put down my sword, when justice was right'. =)
I was taught the same as you. Take it and shut up. I'm not African-American, but I was abused as I grew up and that's what I was told to do. My heart goes out to anyone who has been taught what we have. I now yell as loudly as possible when I see someone being wronged. I hope the same for everyone out there. Use their voice and be heard.
@ObsessedwithBroadway It's wonderful when you hear a good baritone who can actually sing a solid Ab. It's a major baritone power note, so "tenor business" isn't exactly how I'd put it, hahaha.
I find my self at a loss, I was originally a bass and now I am more so a baritone if not a tenor. I can sing this song really well, i do not think "wheels of a dream" will be as easy for me though....
this is my favorite song from ragtime but this version and every other version n here seems so... not right... i cant put my finger on it but it disappoints me
ashamed of being a tenor? lunacy! tenors get all the best parts! I'm so glad I'm a tenor. Any good musical theatre part you can name that's a baritone, i'll name five who are tenors. Stand strong and HIGH my friend!
does anyone by chance have a video of him doing this song on broadway? I'm singing it for a festival and I'd like to see how they blocked it. Thanks :D
Search for "Ragtime clips 2" on YouTube... it's a compilation of Broadway cast clips used in a PBS documentary, and part of Make Them Hear You is used.
Hearing this song again brings tears to my eyes. Stokes sung this song with so much passion. I was sad when he left the show in L.A. to do in NY. What a lovely picture you posted here of Stokes and his wife, Allison. I'll never forget all the trouble he went through just for my friend and I meet him in person on my birtday years ago. Some baritones can even reach high B flat or a pushed high B, but they cannot constantly do that since it will damage their vocals.
