For 1960's animation, the visuals here are just SO awesome and yet, oh SO stunning, right up there with the 1967 Grinch and the Phantom Tollbooth a year after that =-)
back in the day WHITE was a very prominent colour in animations. just look at 70s animation and their great use of WHITE areas. nowadays everyone seems to be afraid of WHITE and will only use white for clouds but thats about it. really weird how no one dares to use white anymore for big areas of the background.
@stargate121 I think that's a deliberate choice - the clunky movement suits the uptight mechanical business atmosphere better. You can use limited animation to get an effect.
me and my friend watched this at 3 a.m. in third grade while we were waiting for a limo to the airport hahaha. we had the song stuck in our heads for most of the vacation.
We watched this in my World History class as a lesson having to do with how you perceive yourself. I think it was one of the most productive classes ever.
Did anyone notice all the cigarette smoking? (Especially the bear.) And that gothic smoke break. I haven’t smoked in a year and a half, but that almost made want to light up again! Got to love the sixties.
I always loved Chuck Jones' view on opulence. The President's office, for example, has this grand feel. Like there's a lot you haven't seen, like there's riches beyond imagination to be discovered there.
I have used this book as required reading in a work psychology class and I (and my students) am always uncovering more meanings/implications. The book is better, but I am glad the movie is available on YouTube, for its convenience.
I heard Frank Tashlin didn't like this and he accused Chuck Jones of missing the whole point of his book. I haven't read it myself, but for anyone who has, do you think this cartoon missed the point of the book?
@CharlesXavier Tashlin: Well, they destroyed the cartoon with one little thing. I saw that, I almost cried. I never talked to Chuck about it, I've never talked to him since. It was a terrible thing. This bear, he goes to sleep under a factory, when he wakes up they try to convince him he's a [man], as you well know, and he keeps insisting he's a bear, and that's the point of it. Up front in the beginning of this thing, when they are telling him he is a man and he is insisting he's a bear, they
@BobbyReed put a cigarette in his mouth. Now, the picture was destroyed there, because by the acceptance of a cigarette—you never saw where he got it—by putting a cigarette in his mouth, he was already a man. You know what I mean? Psychologically, the picture was ruined. It stopped working from that point on. So that was a terrible experience.

I remember watching this as a child and being utterly depressed. I didn't even fully understand what it was about but it left me feeling empty anyway. Now I'm 21. Funny how things haven't changed.
Im soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo happy you posted this cartoon !!! i havent seen it since i was like 10 or so .. and there are so many messages in this cartoon i almost exploded! I loved it.
This is right alongside that Owl Jolson I wanna singa cartoon in terms of sheer greatness !!!
That is extremely true. I was realizing that lately myself. Most people who think they make their own decisions are actually largely steered around by the people around them. And they never really realize it either. It's so pervasive that they can go on for years thinking that what others expect of them is what THEY want.
I saw this along time ago when i was a kid i'm glad i finally found it i remembered it was about a bear but didn't know the name of it until now thanks xavierenigma for posting this.
A GREAT example of how a system can break one's spirit. You're not what you are, but what your surroundings say you are. First they deny the real nature of the bear, they create him a way of life, and no choice according to a superior cause (work and money). At the end the cause disappears and so the bear's new and "real" life and use. It was nice to see the levels of importance in the company and the alignment of the low level bosses with the President. Great cartoon..
What a trippy cartoon! It's amusing how each level of executive has an increasingly unnecessary number of secretaries to say "come in", right up to the big, fancy, probably senile president that needs a whole secretary choir.
Also, there's a couple of scenes of a large group of people smoking. Couldn't show that in a kid's cartoon these days.
The first time I saw this was on Cartoon Network some years ago. It's a favortie of mine. I wish they had more cartoons like this that give real messages to people, instead of the crap they have now.
You know, throughout the entire story, I was expecting the words of the foreman, the general manager, the first, second and third vice president, and the presidents words would disappear in a burst of decapitation and arterial spray.
"I'm not a bear? I'm just a man who needs a shave and wears a fur coat? THEN SHAVE THIS!" =splat=
Is it just me or does some of the artwork look like something out of a Doctor Suess book? I mean things like the design of the bear, the characters and especially the president's office and car?
@Flashmikko i thought that too! especially the singing secretaries, they were like something out of the Grinch. And the repitition of the fur coat comment.
"You're not an artist or a creative person. You're just a radical who needs to cut his hair, shave, stop dressing interestingly, put on a suit and tie, or heels and makeup, and work for our company. And PS, stop thinking. Independent thoughts threaten us, and if you continue to think them, we'll impoverish and destroy you."
@poopalisk did he seriously do this. 99.9% of the time i would instantly think it was a joke. but if its the same chris im thinking of there is about a 50/50 chance in my mind that chugged jizz.
I'm sure, given that Chris views 'The Bear' as a prophet, this is like a parable to him.
Of course, they don't have any surmountable evidence that the bear is a 'silly man who needs a shave and wears a fur coat', and is therefore just a bear. Chris on the other hand, has owned a lot of questionable paraphenalia that will ensure he never gets laid by a woman, and we have the evidence of this. Assuming there was a choice, a straight man would never accept a dildo or anal beads as a free gift.
Yes, but in the 60's, some of my favorites, look them up compared to Fred Quimby's made in the 50's! (that's all pending on direction vs. production too!)
