  • Watched this in school

  • i like bears.:3

  • Essa foi uma das melhores criticas que pude presenciar na minha infância, fico honrada de ter vista.

  • For 1960's animation, the visuals here are just SO awesome and yet, oh SO stunning, right up there with the 1967 Grinch and the Phantom Tollbooth a year after that =-)

  • dj cherno ftw

  • more truth told in 10 min than most people say in a lifetime

  • Chuck Jones did some cool stuff including The Grinch that Stole Christmas.

  • groovy tune at 7:26

  • back in the day WHITE was a very prominent colour in animations. just look at 70s animation and their great use of WHITE areas. nowadays everyone seems to be afraid of WHITE and will only use white for clouds but thats about it. really weird how no one dares to use white anymore for big areas of the background.

  • @MarkP0rter Kind of like 2D for the last two generations of game consoles.

  • bear swag

  • Cum in!

  • pot leaf at 9:24. now this cartoon makes more sense lol

  • {8:53} So he went to Whoville.

  • This represents the best and worst of Chuck Jones. The bear's walk cycle is superb. The rest of the limited animation is clunky and lazy.

  • @stargate121 I think that's a deliberate choice - the clunky movement suits the uptight mechanical business atmosphere better. You can use limited animation to get an effect.

  • Aww it cuts out like 5 second to soon .....

  • I can't believe I finally found this ....I think I'm gonna cry...:'-(

  • I was seeking this out for a very long time. Thanks very much for putting it up, happy place.

  • the symbolic of people, how convincing they are in something that isn't there at all!

  • amazing music at 7:26

  • As a child my brother and I listened to this on a phonograph record a zillion times.

Here is the version we listened to

    abmp3.com/download/3378711-the-bear-that-wasn-t.html

Whether true to the book or not, I think it is much more stimulating and expertly read.

  • by the way i love the song

  • i am from this generation and that's subliminal slavery shit next time think while watching not after

  • me and my friend watched this at 3 a.m. in third grade while we were waiting for a limo to the airport hahaha. we had the song stuck in our heads for most of the vacation.

  • 8 people are just plain bad people.

  • omg that was a waste of time and a waste of an essay i had to do.. wtf arer u thinking u new history teacher gtfo!! >.<

  • where can i find the song?

  • A real life bear that wasn't!

    watch?v=nqoXchQEU3U

  • We watched this in my World History class as a lesson having to do with how you perceive yourself. I think it was one of the most productive classes ever.

  • What is Tashlin, the author, suggesting about the relationship between an individual's identity and society or people with power?

  • Does a bear sh*t in a factory ???

  • @DONTBELIEVEIT1 Hahahah omg... xDDD <3

  • so much funnier when your blazed

  • Man what were they smokin in the 60's... oh yeah right, now I remember...

  • Did anyone notice all the cigarette smoking? (Especially the bear.) And that gothic smoke break. I haven’t smoked in a year and a half, but that almost made want to light up again! Got to love the sixties.

  • This is my favorite animated short!

  • Six retarded humans and ten retarded bears.

  • 1:20 probably the most nightmarish environmental message I've seen.

Six retarded humans and nine retarded zoo bears.

  • 1:20 probably the most nightmarish environmental message I've seen.

  • Do you think that's what suffering is for--to bring us back to our true selves?

  • I always loved Chuck Jones' view on opulence. The President's office, for example, has this grand feel. Like there's a lot you haven't seen, like there's riches beyond imagination to be discovered there.

  • 3:36 The voice sounds like Microsoft Sam...

  • i've been looking for this for quite awhile, always loved it.

  • 3:10 trippy ish

    (his button)

  • Thumbs up if the CWCki sent you!

  • Tom & Jerry never made me cry. This did.

  • i love this cartoon so funny ....

  • Eight silly men that need shaves and wear fur coats didn't like this.

  • Thumbs up if you were redirected here from the CWCki ;)

  • this is like a strange acid trip

  • You are not a bear, you're a silly man in a leather cap, assless chaps and a dog collar who needs to shave his chest...oh wait...

  • "Do you know, my son, with what little understanding the world is ruled?" My interpretation of this summed up in an old quote! :)

  • I have used this book as required reading in a work psychology class and I (and my students) am always uncovering more meanings/implications. The book is better, but I am glad the movie is available on YouTube, for its convenience.

  • thanks alot ive been looking for this cartoon!!! God BLess

  • This is truly a classic cartoon!! Thanks for posting!!

  • I heard Frank Tashlin didn't like this and he accused Chuck Jones of missing the whole point of his book. I haven't read it myself, but for anyone who has, do you think this cartoon missed the point of the book?

  • @CharlesXavier Tashlin: Well, they destroyed the cartoon with one little thing. I saw that, I almost cried. I never talked to Chuck about it, I've never talked to him since. It was a terrible thing. This bear, he goes to sleep under a factory, when he wakes up they try to convince him he's a [man], as you well know, and he keeps insisting he's a bear, and that's the point of it. Up front in the beginning of this thing, when they are telling him he is a man and he is insisting he's a bear, they

  • @BobbyReed put a cigarette in his mouth. Now, the picture was destroyed there, because by the acceptance of a cigarette—you never saw where he got it—by putting a cigarette in his mouth, he was already a man. You know what I mean? Psychologically, the picture was ruined. It stopped working from that point on. So that was a terrible experience.

  • This was Paul Frees' only work for Chuck Jones.

  • I remember watching this as a child and being utterly depressed. I didn't even fully understand what it was about but it left me feeling empty anyway. Now I'm 21. Funny how things haven't changed.

Thanks for putting this up. :)

  • Im soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo happy you posted this cartoon !!! i havent seen it since i was like 10 or so .. and there are so many messages in this cartoon i almost exploded! I loved it.

This is right alongside that Owl Jolson I wanna singa cartoon in terms of sheer greatness !!!

  • "The older I get, the more individuality I find in animals and the less I find in humans" - Chuck Jones.

  • @WillScarlet16

That is extremely true. I was realizing that lately myself. Most people who think they make their own decisions are actually largely steered around by the people around them. And they never really realize it either. It's so pervasive that they can go on for years thinking that what others expect of them is what THEY want.

But sometimes it does break down.

  • I saw this along time ago when i was a kid i'm glad i finally found it i remembered it was about a bear but didn't know the name of it until now thanks xavierenigma for posting this.

  • i have to do homework on dis crap -_-"

  • @jj2phreshx38 wow, you have it easy mate. Stop complaining!

  • @jj2phreshx38 omg me too! where you from? im doing my homework right now on this

  • Omg iv been looking this forever somehow I remembered this for 10 years ago

  • A GREAT example of how a system can break one's spirit. You're not what you are, but what your surroundings say you are. First they deny the real nature of the bear, they create him a way of life, and no choice according to a superior cause (work and money). At the end the cause disappears and so the bear's new and "real" life and use. It was nice to see the levels of importance in the company and the alignment of the low level bosses with the President. Great cartoon..

    These level

  • Woooooow. YouTube got this, too?

  • What a trippy cartoon! It's amusing how each level of executive has an increasingly unnecessary number of secretaries to say "come in", right up to the big, fancy, probably senile president that needs a whole secretary choir.

Also, there's a couple of scenes of a large group of people smoking. Couldn't show that in a kid's cartoon these days.

  • The first time I saw this was on Cartoon Network some years ago. It's a favortie of mine. I wish they had more cartoons like this that give real messages to people, instead of the crap they have now.

  • And it's amazing how stupid people are that they can't recognize the difference between a man and a bear. BTW, your factory was built over HIS CAVE.

I guess this is how Tim from the Cleveland Show got started.

  • i seen this on boomerang 2 months ago! i never thought i'd see it again

  • This is a story about the machine putting down a free spirit.

  • WTF

  • You know, throughout the entire story, I was expecting the words of the foreman, the general manager, the first, second and third vice president, and the presidents words would disappear in a burst of decapitation and arterial spray.

"I'm not a bear? I'm just a man who needs a shave and wears a fur coat? THEN SHAVE THIS!" =splat=

  • @tariqk1981 If he did that, he'd be a CRAZY man who needs a shave and wears a fur coat.

  • makes me feel kind of sad that new generations are growing up without these cartoons!!

  • @hungarianbeast That's what Boomerang is for hopefully its still around when I have kids.

  • This was my favorite cartoon (and the book!) when I was a kid. It taught me to be me... I guess that's why I'm still a bear.

  • i bet if he bit/ate one of their asses then they would see he is a bear

  • @goddess098 good one xDDDDDD

  • 5:08 - 5:45 Sounds like God's angels welcoming us to heaven.

  • Everybody in this short needed to learn that it would be not just the inside but the outside that matters too!

"You are not a bear--you're a man who needs to shave and wears a fur coat!" LOL!

  • I wish these cartoons were still made..

I miss the good old cartoons!

  • Sublime.

  • I really like this cartoon :)

  • this makes me hot

  • Nobody thinks he's a bear. He doesn't even look like a man.

  • Was this from 1964 or 1965?

  • @depg1979 the book is from 1946. but the cartoon was from like '67 i'm pretty sure

  • i knew this shit exist.... i knew i wasn't crazy

  • @Kurama187 me too! i looked everywhere 4 this video... i knew it had 2 be somewhere

  • the president was actually voldemort. i can see. ;D

  • Is it just me or does some of the artwork look like something out of a Doctor Suess book? I mean things like the design of the bear, the characters and especially the president's office and car?

  • @Flashmikko i thought that too! especially the singing secretaries, they were like something out of the Grinch. And the repitition of the fur coat comment.

    i love this though. :)

  • COME IN

  • This is some sort of Kafka-esque nightmare.

  • weird I had no idea it was the same guy that did the voice in the Haunted Mansion at Disney Land and World

  • We should all stop and check if we're not really bears once in a while.

  • Comment removed

  • Thank you raposofan, you understand this perfectly. You should get a medal.

  • Go sonichu! Go out and zap to the extreme!

  • This is the best!

  • I love how the higher up in the ranks the bear goes, each supervisor has gradually more chins and gradually less hair on his head.

  • @hatedemo

    No. Just artistic.

  • @hatedemo

same guy who brought us Marvin the Martin and roadrunner :P

  • @KorparnasTid

    *Martian

  • Yes you all understand! don't ever let anyone tell you you're not a bear!

  • "You're not an artist or a creative person. You're just a radical who needs to cut his hair, shave, stop dressing interestingly, put on a suit and tie, or heels and makeup, and work for our company. And PS, stop thinking. Independent thoughts threaten us, and if you continue to think them, we'll impoverish and destroy you."

  • @raposofan You deserve the golden star, kid! You seem to be the only one that gets it!

  • @raposofan: LOL, nice one ;-).

  • 5:07 "Come in" oprah :)

  • I'm not a psychotic mentally retarded narcissistic sexist prejudice homosexual man child I'm just a silly man who has autism and wears the same shirt

  • Huh, I thought this was gonna be about a bear that turns straight.

  • @poopalisk did he seriously do this. 99.9% of the time i would instantly think it was a joke. but if its the same chris im thinking of there is about a 50/50 chance in my mind that chugged jizz.

  • I'm sure, given that Chris views 'The Bear' as a prophet, this is like a parable to him.

Of course, they don't have any surmountable evidence that the bear is a 'silly man who needs a shave and wears a fur coat', and is therefore just a bear. Chris on the other hand, has owned a lot of questionable paraphenalia that will ensure he never gets laid by a woman, and we have the evidence of this. Assuming there was a choice, a straight man would never accept a dildo or anal beads as a free gift.

  • And then use them, i might add.

  • Mais je suis un ours!

  • no you're not!

  • @poopalisk I hope someone brings that up in the next mailbag.

  • @Chickidydow

He'd just ignore it, sadly. :(

  • That's it -- I'm not going in to work tomorrow. I'm calling in BEAR.

  • I guess it's the cigar and the coffe cup that made others think he's not a bear =))

  • @cristian3131 Precisely. If you look on page 1 of the video comments. you'll see mine on the top of the page concerning 2 things:

    1. That there is no evidence to back the bosses' sayings

    2. The bear being in the wrong place at the wrong time

  • love it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Weird...

  • I love the moral of the story. Like I heard said, figure out who you are before other people tell you who you are. This is a great little film!

  • I was waiting for the bear to go crazy and maul all the vice presidents... it's what I would have done.

  • not just a cartoon but a animited piece of art

  • Who knows how many bears are walking among us, thinkin they're just silly men and women?

  • you just had a stroke of genius my friend.

  • @Gesmehod I'm afraid to find out...

  • I got to talkin' about cartoon's to my g/f and I was like "The bear who wasn't a bear use to be my fave. cartoon."

Had to find it, glad I did.

  • Didn't Chuck Jones direct Tom and Jerry?

  • Some episodes

  • Yes, but in the 60's, some of my favorites, look them up compared to Fred Quimby's made in the 50's! (that's all pending on direction vs. production too!)

  • i love the " come ins"!

  • i frikin love the sonnnngggg

  • i was so happy wheni starded typing in search box:"the bear th..." and find this at last :D

  • ...so much in the world has changed...

  • the bear has a sexy voice

  • I love this story, it is a lesoon to everybody in the world

  • Very nice video, and this was the 2nd time I saw it:P

  • I found an old notebook from High School where I had written, "You are not a bear--you're just a silly man, who needs a shave, and wears a fur coat." It took me years to figure out where I got it from-this was before google & you tube.

  • Love the jazzy music.

  • Comment removed

  • Same ; On Boomerang

  • lol yeah saw it just yesterday

  • Watching this right now for the first time on TV. Had to find it on the internet!

"Come in, come in, come iiiiiin!"

  • i saw this on TCM channel a few months ago and was blown away!

any1 know of a Chuck Jones DVD?

  • It's an extra on Looney Tunes Golden Collection Volume 3.

  • at least the president thought for himself and didn't just repeat the same stuff of his subordinates

  • It's amazing how this cartoon can be interpreted on so many levels. Truly a great cartoon. Thanks for uploading it.

  • I love it when the Formans badge laughs too! LOLOLOL

  • If everyone thinks that you aren't a bear, you aren't a bear.

If everyone thinks that two plus two are five, two plus two are five.

  • What's popular isn't always right, and what's right isn't always popular. If the bear says he is one, let him say so. Chances are that he knows more about himself than anybody else.

  • If no one disagrees with a wrong fact on Wikipedia, then it's a right fact.

  • I wonder if the secretaries in the President's office have to sing that every single time someone comes in.

    Couldn't pay me enough.

  • he lives like 5 miles underground...

  • I haven't seen this since I was 7! I'm so glad you posted it...

  • AMAZING!

  • I've been looking for this toon for a while, because I always enjoy the secretaries harmonizing.

  • Good ol' Jones sure makes good cartoons!!!!!!!!

  • This is brilliant.

  • Well...I guess I may as well.

  • i dobt get it....

  • check out the trinitytravis channel
