  • My favorite horror movie along with The Shining and Jaws.

  • greatest movie ever.

  • @troublesomej well whatever you do don't waste your money on the re-make. It sucks :(

  • Interesting in that there are quite a number of deleted scenes shown in this promotional film. This is the first time I've seen McReady putting stuff on his new bed inside the camp because his shack is too cold. That's not in the final movie. Blair's examination of the dog-thing is different from the version in the film and Naul's being let in by Palmer is probably an earlier take from the one in the final cut as the acting is slightly different.

  • 2:40 Diabeetus!

  • @j0nw

    Nooo! :)

  • Why would MacReady try to open the door instead of just talking them to do so?

  • such a good film! they dont make em like this any more!!!!

  • I don't understand why most fans hate the prequel. It was very faithful. The ending fits very nicely to the 1982 version.

  • @spoonmonkey14

    1) It was not faithful at all. I have seen the 82 film more times than I can count. I know it line for line.

There is no ice cave in the 82 version, you see them blow up the ice to get to the ship in the 82 version.

They mixed up the Norwegians in the end, Lars is the one who drops the grenade and blows up. Neither is wearing the fur hooded parka like the 82 film.

No kerosene cans next to splitface but they are there in the 82 film.

    Need I go on?

  • @snake2006 No thank you, the re-make sucked lol

  • @butterfly153239

It wasn't a remake, it was a prequel that failed at being a prequel.

  • @snake2006 I meant prequel* sorry lol but anyways it did fail miserably

  • Truly a cinematic masterpiece. If you re-watch this anytime soon, keep in mind what it must have taken to get it all to look real.

Movie directing is underrated. Few people ever stop when watching a film to say "I wonder how they got that shot".

Thumbs up if you're one of the few who do stop to think.

  • Damn I miss movies like that! Nothing comes close nowadays!

  • I admire the fact that these guys were REALLY in the fucking ice and snow filming this. Makes it more real. I wish the the Thing 2011 was like that, instead of them sweating all the damn time

  • first goddamn week of winter

  • one of the best "horror" movies of all time, and I think will always be.

  • kurt russel is so cool

  • @LEAGUExOFxASSASSINS I have SO thought of that LMAO!

  • Yea, i agree about the grainy grittiness of movies in visuals. It`s the same with general photos too. there`s a meatiness that looks more realistic to life than the squeaky clean, crisp-perfection we get in images nowadays. In fact, if you just look around the world, it is not perfection in lines, light and colour in a fantasy looking way. I`ve even taken pictures of my hometown and it looks BETTER in the photo than when I look with my own eyes- Weird...

  • 1 dislike is from the thing

  • I love the suspense and tension in this movie, amazing

  • I always liked Kurt Russel, but after watching The Thing...He's a fucking boss....

  • The opening scene of Ghost ship used CGI and casting of people If I'm right, now that's how they should of redid The Thing.

  • But maybe I am partial to the old ways. I just like how "rough" all the older 80.s movies look. I heard Indiana Jones was actually shot a certain way even though Spielberg could have afforded the film to be crystal clear. And having great and likeable actors is a plus. I don't "dislike" al new movies. The Matrix (1st only)and the newer batmen movies are some of my favorite new ones. The movie 300 was heavy CGI but it looked awsome in it's own way because it was done on purpose.

  • @altman0005

I like the grittiness of older movies too. CGI ruins a lot of films these days IMO.

Of course it is also awesome when used right.

  • John Carpenters verson is still the best. Their is something more gritty about the sets and more convening about the actors then the newer Thing prequel. The CGI moments still cannot out do what the 80.s props did in that movie. At the end of the 80.s version you can tell some of the monster is stop motion and I would take that over bad CGI any day but most of their stuff looks real even to this day.

  • John Carpenter should release this movie with all their original scenes.

    (Director's Cut)

  • Everytime i see carpenter in an interview hes always got a fag going.

  • @TheGodParticle lmao

  • I just read the story 'Who Goes There' by John W. Campbell Jr. which was the basis for the original movie. It was really well written, and the great part is how closely the events of the 1982 version by Carpenter follows Campbell's original story. The movie even used the same names for the characters. Just 'google' 'Who Goes There--The Thing' and you can read it online.

  • @DiGiTaLdAzEDM

Yes this movie is THE adaptation of Who Goes There

  • Special effects were amazing for this time period. Universal released this movie 2 weeks after E. T. It was a mistake Universal made but oh well. Amazing movie.

  • @BestOfTheBestNumber9 yep and that reason why those japanese animators was probably inspired by the Thing Akira,Urotsukidouji,Genocyber,Wicked City and the list goes on and on!

  • The film scared the crap out of me the first time I saw it and is still the scariest film Ive ever seen.

  • @rochstan123 Really?Wasn't that scary imo,but well done.

  • @rochstan123 i think I saw it for the first time when i was about 4 and it scared the shit outta me

  • thats a fuckin scary movie one of the most scariest movie i saw since i waz 8

  • blood + snow = cool colors :D

  • my friend and me had been talking about the new movie for months when i asked him to go see it he said no because he was too scared thumbs up if you think my friends a pussy

  • lots of new info on Carpenter's original - theoriginalfan.blogspot.com.

  • Snake Plissken. I thought he was dead?

  • @cochranexyz that's what I heard.

  • One of the best horor movies ever made, period!!

  • thanks for this

  • @Bensterr23 Ive watched it, it amazingly stays true to Carpenters version albeit theres one scene particularly towards the end where it gets a bit actiony, but don't worry you'll love it!

  • They should have put this documentary on the DVD/BLU RAY release. Classic monster movie though.

  • Thanks for posting this, it's a real gem. I've been a Thing fan and suffering nightmares from the movie since '85. This truly is one of the greatest movies to feature fear and less often used paranoia...

  • Very interesting footage about the film!

  • The Thing, Halloween, The Fog, Escape from New York, and Big Trouble in Little China are my favorite films ever!! John Carpenter is my all time favorite director next to Tim Burton and Kurt Russell is one of my favorite actors!!! Their films will always hold a place in my heart! Hollywood can remake or reboot whatever film they want, but they will never come close to leaving a legacy like Carpenter's films does.

  • wait wtf ?? the start time scene at 2:40 I NEVER SAW IN FULL LIKE THAT! man i got to fetch out my moms old VHS version and see if that whole scene is on there when he says "Its not dead yet" and everybody backs up! lol i have the special edition on dvd and watched it numerous times and that scene i never saw play all the way out....i always said the best old horror movie cuts are on VHS for its soundtrack version and movie scenes. dvd seems to strip that shit. why is that??

  • @demonkai76 Yeah, I noticed at least two scenes they showed here that were cut from the movie.

  • Comment removed

  • Great film; but the original was better.

  • I absolutly love The Thing(2011),I knew hoe it was gonna end,but I just love how it explains questions, perfectly goes into the John Carpenter film,it was awesome

  • @MallRat666

definitely agreed!! i seen that shit first day on that friday and i was in shock and awe how the mayhem was going down in that prequel!

  • @BestOfTheBestNumber9 Last night I drank a Lava lamp and then I fucked a german shepard

  • Windows BLAST HIM!!

  • boring.............i want to see the defibrillator scene

  • the top comment is my fav youtube comment ever so far :)

  • Keith David is so boss.

  • @BestOfTheBestNumber9 Yeah that's true, I'm going to go see the new one on October 14 and to tell you the truth I'm kinda scared because this version like practically traumatized me when I first saw it as a kid. I know this one came out 1982 about 3 years before I was born and seen it on tv a couple years later and omg, I was never so scared in my life at that time! I don't know if the new one is going to scare the fuck outta me like this one did or it's just gonna suck, but I hope not!

  • pretty much directed by Howard Hawks?

  • 1 person is the THING

  • I thought the game was great!!! I looked past the glitchyness of it... They had a really good idea of it! I wish for a remake!!!

  • IN the 2011 film . they have shave and cream

  • Never a big fan of this movie. Gross and kinda cheesey, sums it up but this documentry shows what great people go into making a movie and how there are numerous elements go into making a film. Cool documentry though. John Carpenter is awesome, love Halloween and Escape From New York.

  • HEY MAN LOOK FOR ME ON THE WEB UNDER THING-FEST ALONG WITH RUE MORGUE MAGAZINE THIS OCT .2011 I AM HAVING THIS EVENT IN TORONTO CANADA WHEN THE NEW MOVIE WILL BE OUT WORLD WIDE THIS OCT 14.2011 BLOCK AWAY FROM WHERE THEY FLIMED THE NEW MOVIE! "THING-FEST"..................

  • This is what I think a lot of movies lack nowadays; big studio flicks don't have this kind of heart anymore. When you're worried about creature comforts and coffee breaks and bitch about the cold... ... well, you're not seeing the awesomeness of being able to make a movie.

I mean look at the crew here; they're cold, they're sleepy, but damn, they're there, making this movie.

  • ATTENTION PREQUEL FANS: Join the Facebook group The Thing - Prequel if you REALLY want to get in on the hype!

  • The new one or prequel for this aint going to come close unless they've done it right and made it match up to this version or sequel. The two in a DVD box set would be odd viewing otherwise. Plus the fun of the 1982 film was watching what cool rubber FX they'd come up with to show the transformations and such. CGI will be . OK, yeah a computer did that. Plus why simulate blood pouring and the like when you can clearly do blood pouring and the like with actual liquids and materials? Who knows.

  • @kezadrone The prequel is done such that it segues directly into the 1982 film. Stay past the credits when you see the 2011 version. This movie begins where The Thing (2011) ends, and even the sets in the prequel are designed to totally match-up with the remains of the camp you see in the 1982 version.

  • @BigMikeMcBastard As long as they totally match up the FX we'll be good. :D

  • @kezadrone You really think they're going to use exclusively effects from 30 years ago in this movie?

  • @BigMikeMcBastard Not all of the film of course but with modern animatronics and silicones It would be a shame not to go down that path at least for some stuff. BUt the new Cinema release of Sinbad the fifth voyage is using state of the art stop-motion for the Dynamation shots so not all need be CGI these days.

  • @kezadrone The movie has a lot of physical effects and isn't just CGI, if that's what you're worried about.

  • Comment removed

  • @BigMikeMcBastard That's good news, I'm quite happy now sir. Cheers for clearing it up. :D Peace.

  • This is a best film for me in 3 ways:

    1. It's the best John Carpenter film with Kurt Russell (they've made 5 in total).

    2. It's the best Carpenter film, period (along with Halloween).

    3. It's the best remake (and I usually don't like remakes).

I also think Russell's performance in it is his best as well.

  • One of Carpenter's best. My favorite.

  • I miss horror movies :(

  • @juliantracks Me 2.

  • it's odd how the goriest mutation scenes have the slowest, calmest parts of the soundtrack

  • @StreakyTheFurry Yeah that's right. The fact that they decided to cut the score on the big action scenes and just let the atmosphere and folly artist do there thing is great. By today's standards the conventions/sensibilities would be reversed. ADD babe!

  • I dont think i have this one on the 2000 dvd... damn¡¡

  • the thing prequel will use both cgi and models..but some good cgi, the same people that created the alien effects for district 9, that shit looked pretty real

  • great movies by great directors....no CGI crap. "The Thing" circa. 1982 this movie rocked!

  • 7:00 they needed to have this in the film lol

  • IN MY TOP 5 GREATEST SCI FI MOVIES EVER MADE,AND THEY LIVE IS IN MY TOP 3

  • Damn, Childs can blow! lol I've never seen this.

  • cool, very cool, never seen that before

  • if you are about to "thing"-out on me lol love kurt russel

  • if it is on Norwegian camp why are there Americans in there? what is wrong with Norwegian audio and English subtitles? that would make it more scary as you focus on the acting and reactions of the cast to the thing.

  • Watch the skies, keep watching, everyone.

  • this movie is awesome on its own. remaking it is going to be like trying to remake the original JAWS. it shouldnt be done and you cannot make it any better. of course i am still going to see it though, so i guess the fat cats in LA have already won

  • @1023JPG It's not a remake if you mean the Thing movie coming out this year. It tells the story of the Norwegian camp site so it's a prequel. Of course they can mess it up but it still doesn't change the fact that this is in the top 5 of all time scifi/horror movies.

  • @1023JPG

Have you forgotten This movie is a remake?

  • @Johnlindsey289 It's not really a remake. More of a re-imagining of the story from the novella "Who Goes There?"

  • "HAPPY 29TH BIRTHDAY!" JUNE 25TH 2011 - TODAY IS THE 29TH ANNIVERSARY! TO "THE THING" 1982 BLOCK BUSTER CLASSIC....JOHN CARPENTER'S >THE THING!< LOOK FOR THING-FEST ON FACEBOOK TODAY JUNE 25TH 2011......

  • PLEASE CHECK OUT THING-FEST 2011! WHO GOES THERE? LETS HOPE YOU DO!

  • Kurt Russell's got some nice hair.

  • awesome subtle deleted scenes

  • i wish they filmed the scary parts

  • I always thought Kurt Russell looked alot like Jim Morrison in this movie. Am I the only one ???

  • Interesting how editing really improved the dog autopsy scene from the original version shown here. Final cut gave us all the info we needed, sounded more natural, and was far more dramatic.

  • There are fer trees in the antarctic?

  • @BWGgy Only in the British Columbia section of Antarctica.

  • @GoblinXXX Thanks.

But... Antarctica is the south pole, and nothing grows down there cept for some moss.

I finally just looked it up on the wiki. And the wiki page for the movie says it's set in the Antarctic. Funny goof for them, but they tried, like they say @ 4:27

  • @BWGgy It was SHOT in British Columbia, at least the exteriors-- No one cared if they got trees in the background of a Making Of documentary. I'm pretty sure we see no trees in the actual movie.

  • @GoblinXXX I just finished reading the book by Alan Dean Foster. A lot in there that never made it to the film, such as Childs' drug greenhouse, Fuchs' axe death, and Macready's storming of the outpost at the end.

  • @wandererlain Hm, I didn't even know there WAS a novelization-- I read WHO GOES THERE, the short story by John W. Campbell that it and THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD are both based on-- Everyone recognizes that it was a Lovecraft pastiche, but it's also a DOC SAVAGE pastiche: MacReady is Doc, and the rest of the characters (Carpenter uses their actual names) are all Doc Savage's sidekicks/assistants.

  • kurt russel is so beast, hes a good actor

  • @tylerf13ful You mean like a hairy beast? LOL

  • I think the new movie is gonna be about the Norwegian team that dug up the UFO with the thing inside of it. Anyways, it will most likely be flop?

  • @Heimegut66 It'll probably be okay, as long as they don't completely CGI the alien.

  • best horror movie ever

the thing of 2011 (remake) is a shit movie

  • @TheOcram991 So, you've seen the remake already?

  • @TheOcram991 Thought so. I bet there's a crappy and unscary CGI monster, too?

  • this is one of the best horror movies i have ever seen. John Carpenter is an underrated director imo. He does not get enough credit for his movies.

This movie came out in 1982 and I still enjoy it. I know the prequel is coming out soon but it will never be better than this.

  • @youliveyoudie Yesssssssssssss! God knows how many times I've seen Carpenter's version, and the prequel so many decades later (this is almost 30 years old!) makes no sense whatsoever!

  • bets horror/ monster movie ever!

  • jeez maybe they should put the rock or vin diesal in the new one they can shave their heads pluck their eyebrows exchange earings the thing wont want to replicate them and they"ll be safe

  • A prequel is a stupid and unnecessary idea!!!

WHY does everything have to be explained nowadays. It's scarier not knowing what happened with the Norwegians. Besides Hollywood is cutting back like us all.

You can't top the practical FX of this film with some CGI mess created by one or two dorks on a MAC. It'll completely be a bunch of production art manufactured Follywood crap. ENOUGH REMAKES. ENOUGH PREQUELS. ENOUGH SEQUELS!!!!! STOP PLEASE!!!

  • @PumaSweat It's really quite simple, the people who finance & distribute these movies are in the business of making money. They don't give a flying fuck about the "art of film making". From a business standpoint, If you're going to invest time & money into a project, why gamble on an original yet unproven idea, when you can make a sequel or remake to a film with a built-in audience & exponentially increase your odds of turning a profit.

  • @PumaSweat Bottom line: They'll stop churning out remakes, sequels, & prequels when people stop supporting them. Besides, i can think of a handful of remakes that surpass the original. Ironically, one of them is the very film on display here. Interestingly enough you sing the praises of "The Thing" (a remake) & then proceed to bash remakes in the very same comment.

  • @BrutalGoregasm Cant tell if your for me or against me, but I don't think there is any irony. Mostly I agree. Movies have been remade for years, especially when a film is very old and new film technology could help tell the story better. Nothing Wrong with that. "Of Mice or Men" for example. The Thing is 30 yrs old, came out before this current trend. That's what I'm talking about. They are remaking Total Recall for the love of God!

What's next a Batman Begins remake...? Called Batman Again!

  • @PumaSweat Well, i definitely agree that the current trend of remakes has gotten out of hand. My point was that, there are some gems amongst all the garbage; even in recent years. Also they serve the function of introducing a new generation to a beloved franchise, while modernizing it to suit the youth's sensibilities. Not to mention they're making these studios money hand over fist.

  • @BrutalGoregasm Yeah that's what i'm talking about I mean like 3:10 to Yuma was an old film remake was great!. Of Mice or Men was a b/w film from the 30's or 40's. 1992 remake was great! Logan's Run what was that late 60's...could be helped by a little facelift into 2000 now. But it's the very definition of remake today. There are films from the 60's, 70's, and 80's that are still WAY relevant. Some artistic expression is the voice of the time and should be left alone.

  • @BrutalGoregasm

Do you think it's ok to remake a movie that wasn't terribly well known or beloved in the first place? what did you think of The Crazies? a great example of remaking an obscure movie

  • @PumaSweat

Some remakes can sometimes can bring something new to the table while respecting the original. for example The Thing was made in the 1950's which was a decent but hokey product of it's time as it had a great idea but they didn't had the technology or time to do it justice back then as 30 years after that Carpenter adored the original as he remade it for a new generation thus it improved on the original's execution yet honored it. Was this remake made for money or love?

  • @Johnlindsey289 No disrespect but you may have missed on of my original comments. Remake a film may be fine if a creative approach or film technology can tell the story better. But that's not what's going on in Hollywood right now. They are just using a familar brand name and slapping crap together to make money off of curiosity. The Fly, The Thing 3:10 to Yuma, Of Mice and Men, all great remakes but did we really need the Karate kid?

  • @PumaSweat

Do you think it's ok to remake a movie that isn't terribly well known, obscure or not beloved?

  • @BrutalGoregasm True. Some films can be improved upon in the remake, but surely not this.

  • @wandererlain I can't argue with that.

  • My Brother and I visited the Hollywood set for this movie while it was being made. We found Wilfred Brimley's underground Flying Saucer in the trash out back. Tried to put it on the roof of our car but had to leave it in the end. They used "forced perspective" on the filming of it to make it look much bigger than it really was.

  • I wish they had made a mockumentary about the lives of the men at Outpost #31, just like they did with Curse of the Blair Witch. There'd be clips of MacReady in his shack talking about what kind of shampoo he uses for his beard as he hooks up an old Atari which he affectionately christens the Cheatin' Bitch 2, Blair making himself and Fuchs bowls of oatmeal in the kitchen, and Clark letting the Huskies do their business in random beds as payback for them all suspecting him.

  • the movie would have changed carpenter's career, if it was a huge hit back in 1982

  • Kurt could've played Jim Morrison.

  • The Thing (2011) prequel to the 1982 film of the same name. It will take place right before the first film, with the original Norwegian crew that discovered the alien.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------

I hope this will be good (videogame was bullshit)

  • @HATZCOOC This movie was made around 30 years ago....

  • @HATZCOOC lol i remember my dad buying the videogame when i was a kid. He was a fan of The movie and was hyped for the game...it was a major letdown lol

Btw did you know they're making a remake of the original Thing... i for one can't wait.

  • @HATZCOOC Don't agree on the videogame at all... it was ground-breaking when it was released. I still remember going in to buy it and running home!!

  • @HATZCOOC helll yea

  • the main guy of this film is awesome

  • Great featurette for my all time favorite Carpenter film.

  • @TheAltair4

Too bad they didn't put it on the DVD but it could have been a nice one. I have a Thing t-shirt, action figure, the PS2 sequel game and it was one of the first DVDs i got after my 2000 graduation when i got my player for graduation from my dad.

  • @Johnlindsey289 Yeah, it would have been nice if they had included this in the collector's edition, but they put a lot of other great stuff on it though.

  • Awesome movie, one of my faves since i was 16 and one of the best Sci-fi horror movies this side of Alien 1 & 2. The ultimate remake!

  • They are making a part two soon...This movie was crazy...scared the shit out of me when I was little.

  • @Spyder8561 Part 2 was the Video game for the Xbox and PS2 lurk more.

  • @GrilloJ123 No, I'm talking about a movie. I was looking at a site about remakes and sequels and they're in the process of either making this movie over or a sequel.

  • @Spyder8561 They're making a prequel with Mary Elizabeth Winstead in the starring role as a "tough Antarctica scientist."

What the hell is Mary Elizabeth Winstead doing at a Norwegian Antarctic Research Station in 1982??

  • @Craigmin dating one of her Evil Exes

  • @Spyder8561

It's a prequel actually just called "The Thing" when it could have been called "The Thing Unearthed" instead.

  • @Johnlindsey289 - It could have... but doesn't that just sound cheesy?

  • I can't wait for the prequel, the director was very anal about how it's going to look

  • Great movie to watch in the winter.

  • One of the top 10 best American horror films. I must have seen it in my life at least 75 times, and it never gets old. Just fantastic in every respect.

  • I think it's a great film, but I guess people get scared/horrified too easily. This isn't all that gory/scary. Yes, it's one of the best horror films I've ever seen, but doesn't disgust or scare me...

  • @joaocorreiamedia Try putting yourself "inside" of the story...either you'll be scared, or you're just not doing it right, lol.

  • yeah i remember siting in a lawn chair, you know the long kind that fold.. i don't believe they make them any more. it was mid July about 75 degrees that night but i was covered up to the neck with a blanket out side my fathers sweet costume van! oh the memory's.

  • Carpenter was one of the king in terrifying horror back then. The Thing, The Fog, Halloween, Christine, and Escape from NY. All storytelling masterpieces.

  • It wanted to be uuusssss
