go search out the new theme track from the edge's lost in a box (new zealand radio show) Sound a little similar? I love this piece of genius so much, worth ripping off....
The director of this video said that when he heard the song for the first time, the strong drum-machine base sounded as slapping the face of somebody, thats why he asked his dancers to do this
Yes it is about drugs and drug problems as is clear from when the band sings the original lyrics live. A change in the lyrics was made for the recorded version in order to get it played on the radio.
@Draugh39 Absolutely, suposedly the late and great Bernard Sumner was responsible for the original lyrics and those original lyrics related to what he imagined, being drug dependant was like! Ref: Q magazine 1999
@ctti You are absolutely right!, my mistake. I was writing about Bernard Sumner and the origins of this wonderful song and used "Late and Great" and as you rightly point out Bernard Sumner is very much alive. As an excuse, I had just been watching Joy Division's " Love will tear us apart" and a reference to Ian Curtis ( because that was what it was) was used ! sorry!
As a kid I used to sit up listening to the radio late at night in the hope this song would come on. It was probably the first song I ever loved, and it still sounds every bit as good today.
we dont take credit cards , this is a cash bar ........ your a stupid ugly bitch ... i wannt to stab you to death and play around with your blood ^^...... a,erican psycho , got to love that movie hahahaa
It's good to see kids turning on to the 80's music. Last golden age if you ask me. I guess even the kids see how lame tunes are today. Over-produced corporate garbage, all the same, with distorted robot voices, must get boring after a while.
@yakfitguy Agreed. I've noticed that with alot of kids turning to 80's music. I'm 39 and went through the 80's. I'm a New Order fan but my fav band is Simple Minds.
this song always makes me feel good despite the darkness that surrounds me. new order were and are such an amazing band. what they were able to do with the sudden, sad demise of joy division is nothing short of remarkable. they crafted a sound all their own with peter hooks distinct guitar. they rose from the ashes and became true pioneers in dance and electronic music. if i live until 80, i will still be listening to new order.
This is from the songwriter, Bernard Sumner, during an interview for Q magazine in 1999.
"(True Faith) is about drug dependency. I don't touch smack but when I wrote that song I tried to imagine what it's like to be a smackhead and nothing else matters to you except that day's hit."
@Whiskeyfur. From the way you have cited your source, I can tell that you've recently(?) completed a University degree (even done post-grad studies),since I detect a certain familiarity with careful citation of references. Allow me, however, to comment on your INTERPRETATION of the quotation.1)'Yes, they are singing about smack' : IF we take Summer's words for granted, then the song is NOT about 'smack' but about DRUG DEPENDENCY.I'm sure you can tell the difference in the LINGUISTIC REGISTER!tbc
@whiskeyfur [part2]. 2)The songwriter says: 'I don't touch smack, but [..] I TRIED TO IMAGINE' {emphasis mine}. In other words, and - to be more precise- READING BETWEEN THE LINES, the song is about a PERFORMANCE (an IMATATION, if you will) OF DRUG DEPENDENCY! This is not THE MEANING of the song: 'smack', 'drug dependency' are SIMPLY the song's THEMATICS. The implication of all this is that, whereas the departure point for the writing of the song's lyrics is say, farts, its MEANING is OPEN-ENDED!
@whiskeyfur -part3 ( 'space consideration' is the least of my concerns lol): It was a decent effort on your behalf to cite the songwriter's words as .. proof of the song's meaning. However, since the 50's and especially in the 80's when Post-Structuralism took the UK academic world by storm, AUTHORIAL INTENTIONS is pointless gossip! When it comes to the study of ANY text, therefore, taking the AUTHOR's words for granted (as if he was a .. God) is ridiculous:THERE IS NOTHING OUTSIDE THE TEXT!
PS: Quoting (actually- 'copy-pastying') your words:
''I wouldn't put too much stock in it''
-- that's so no true lol - you even managed to find a reference from.. Plato *sorry, Q magazine* for the sake of the discussion, didn't you? So, don't take YOUR words for granted, either lol*

To PARTHURT: Wow you blew me away with your comment-too bad I DID NOT invite any discussion! However, since you felt qualified to address ME with a note on..'FARTOLOGY', I kindly return the favour:IF you were an expert on CRITICAL THEORY, I'd probably elaborate on the NUISSANCES of the 'smack', as you put it, based on Derridean & Baudrillardian notions-trust me, I would help you look SOPHISTICATED. Luckily for both of us, you are clearly suffering from INTELLECTUAL CONSTIPATION & I from boredom
is their a newer version or something because I heard it on a Detroit radio channel called 9.55 fm. It sounded like it was more advanced, if you know what I'm talking about please tell me the new name.
To dearbornpolice. Watch them do this song live at Reading 1998. It is awesome. plus it's the orig' version. They sing 'now they're taking drugs with me' which was changed before it went on general release.
Viewers of this clip should QUIT efforts to decipher its meaning. The main reason for this is that- with a few exceptions- the viewers are UNTRAINED & UNQUALIFIED to contribute to the discussion, since they ignore the BASICS (!) on Visual Culture.
HINT: It is a POST-MODERN clip, because it RESISTS analysis & the possibility for ONE TRUE MEANING. It's a RIDDLE - like any GREAT work of ART. PS: those who dismiss pop music as easy, should think again. Most Pop Fans, should begin to think-for once!
Ecstasy. They wanted to show something weired in this Video, like something, that you see, then you are on Drugs. Means they wanted to Visualy the Drugs Trips.
i freaking love this song. first song i heard from new order on a throwback weekend for my local rock radio station. ive been addicted to them ever since. :] not sure i understand the video though. o.o xD
I remember playing this video at the VIP Club in Springdale Arkansas. We were the only club in 4 states to play music videos in that day. This video was an instant club favorite. We had two 12 foot video screens right on the dance floor. All the videos were BETA HI-FI STEREO. lol those were the days!
When I was a very small boy, Very small boys talked to me Now that weve grown up together Theyre afraid of what they see Thats the price that we all pay Our valued destiny comes to nothing I cant tell you where were going I guess there was just no way of knowing I used to think that the day would never come Id see delight in the shade of the morning sun My morning sun is the drug that brings me near To the childhood I lost, replaced by fear
I knew I used to listen to this, a long time ago, before I knew what was what, musically... seeing the pictures brought it all back. Thank you! Who needs regressive hypnosis when you've got youtube?
If I remember reading, it's actually about heroin addiction. It's more evident in the original song lyrics that references drugs, but was changed due to pressure by the label executives. Funnily enough, this song made them more popular with the younger crowd because of the music video, despite the more adult-oriented lyrics.
To the guys who thumbed this guy down: This addition enables you to listen to the song in a higher quality and IN STEREO! It doesn't work for every single video here on YT, but most.

I hate and love this song at the same time ,theres love the chorus but everything else, the start of it, and the melody where nobody is singing just..sucks.. is dry, but its a great song
There is just nothin like 80's music. The videos were so creative and groundbreaking, and fun. This song really takes me back to High school, and brings back all those feelings of teenage angst, and trying to fit in.They were sort of a one-hit-wonder band, but what a hit this was.Sweeeeet!!!!
Fuckin song takes me ther...top down.......blinded by tha wafer rollin 4:32 a.m. Dallas Texsez ..tellin friends u luv'em and it's a great moment in our time. Then, we move on to another time. we can go ther in our mind on occasion. Only, tha few. This song is the Trigger.
WTF? At least the money for nothing video was funny. I still love this song but the video is avante garde garbage, it hardly fits with the feeling of the song and it doesn't belong at all.
La cancion es buenisima, de entre las mejores de New Order, lo cual significa de las mejores. El video tiene creatividad, humor, imaginacion y gracia. La suma de la cancion mas el video, lo convierte en, para mi, el mejor videoclip que vi.
This was featured in the beginning of "American Psycho". Parts of the movie seem relevant in today's corporate America...The yuppie culture is alive and evolved to 2.0
This song always wakes me up.
Unfortunaltly I have to get up in about 7 hours so I really don't want to be wide awake.

American Psycho is one of my favorite movies of all time. The soundtrack alone just makes it great :) Hahaha that movie is so twisted.
