Jewel is a Goddess of rock,! in I fact worked many shows when she toured & saw her open for Neil many times over, She is unique & talented, if Bob says it's cool, thats law,, but if Bob and Neil say it's cool, it better the any scripture ever written. Frankly, this reminds me a lot of Lady Day's (Billie Holiday) vocals. She is not replicating Neil, she is adding her voice. Its actually pretty good. I wish there was a longer arrangement.

This is disappointing. Jewel's voice, while being very soft and feminine, has a certain rawness to it which is appropriate for "Needle," plus she's a competent guitarist. So I was totally ready to love this.
But no, she had to go and butcher the vocal arrangement! Totally oversung!

Hey, I saw Jewel open for Neil back in the YOTH and I think she does a fine cover. Might not be your cuppa, but she does a credible job IMHO. BTW - she had it pretty rough living in a van with her mom up in Alaska, so she has just a bit of cred for this song.
She used the capo so she could sing it in her key, where Neil sang it in D. I'm pretty sure Neil could have sung this as high as Jewel. This one is a bit over the top. She actually did a nicer version on the Howard Stern show.

I got chills listening to this :) It might not resemble the original version, but that makes it even more better. Her soothing voice makes it completely special and she sang it completely in her own way. Great job. Very inspiring :)

This is disappointing. Jewel's voice, while being very soft and feminine, has a certain rawness to it which is appropriate for "Needle," plus she's a competent guitarist. So I was totally ready to love this.
But no, she had to go and butcher the vocal arrangement! Totally oversung!

She's trying way too hard to sound like she has some intense emotional connection to the song. I don't have a problem with Jewel at all. I wouldn't say I'm a "fan" but I have liked some of her songs over the years. But this is not good...

To my ears, this cover has taken a raw, beautiful, heartfelt, poignant and melodic song and moulded it into an imbalanced, whining wreck. Even if Neil Young himself likes it, I just can't manage it. I hear only forced and acted emotion here, nothing genuine. Sorry Jewel, but your cover of this gem is full of impurities.

Hey, I saw Jewel open for Neil back in the YOTH and I think she does a fine cover. Might not be your cuppa, but she does a credible job IMHO. BTW - she had it pretty rough living in a van with her mom up in Alaska, so she has just a bit of cred for this song.
