is pinyin the base of mandarin and Cantonese ? or just mandarin ?

@Ishidasouken Just Mandarin. Cantonese has it's own/another pinyin system. Cantonese and Mandarin are completely different (in terms of how it sounds). I believe the grammar and Characters are pretty much the same though.

@Tuennemann72 Are you asking me, or just making a general statement? If you're asking me (and no problem with the English ;) ) I learned it because I wanted to live in China. So the answer would be Life Style. I ended up living in Taiwan for 5 years. :)

I know you spent time in Taiwan. Since they use bopomofo there, did you ever learn that system as well as the pinyin?

@aafrophone I did end up learning the ol' Zhuyin Fuhao. What I did is pick up a kids wall poster and put it up behind the TV. Every time there was a commercial break I'd go through it: bopomofo... I think it only took me a couple weeks to get the basics down. It's useful in Taiwan because there are so many kids books to read.

@turdbug Just skip these lessons then. Chinese is the #1 most spoken (mother tongue) language in the world. China is also becoming a powerhouse economically. There are lots of reasons to want to learn the language. Also, I'm actually a lot more capable of teaching people how to learn Chinese because I've learned it as an adult. A native Chinese speaker never (consciously) learned the language so many aren't very effective teachers. And you are trolling.
