svetlana is a very nice dancer, there's no doubt about that. but i think a lot of that rides on her feet and extensions. once you get over the initial 'wow' factor of her over-split, she actually gets a bit boring... she is very lucky to be born with those feet, her proportions and her natural flexibility. kinda makes you wonder, would she be so adored as a dancer so much if she didn't have that sort of luck in being born with the ideal ballerina body?

I just finished watching a video with Vishneva doing this same variation and it's so interesting to watch two very different dancers dancing Odette. Zahkarova's Odette is so composed and elegant while Vishneva's is sensual and emotional.

@frapuchinocaramel excuse me? i was being CIVIL and NEUTRAL, but now that people like you have come out... i PERSONALLY prefer gillian. yes, zakharova's feet and proportions are STUNNING, but it's just sheer luck she was born with that. over-split and getting your legs up next to your ears is nothing special in the ballet world. zakharova has the emotions of a brick wall and she can't jump. gillian is much more expressive and she also gets her legs way up there.

Ballet and art are not competitions, we aren't avaliating who can bring their legs higher; the purpose of it all is to have joy; what I, personaly, have more with Gillian's dramacity than with Svetlana's legs... But if somebody doesn't, what would be the problem:

@BiscuitOfMaple haha thank you :) precisely. ballet is telling a story. it is a whole performance. good ballet is not simply getting your legs behind your head. i recently watched a the recording of baryshnikov and makarova doing giselle. i am pretty sure that not once did she get her foot above the top of her head, yet i cried through the whole thing. THAT is real ballet.

hmmm. gillian murphy and zakharova... i think they're both on the same level in different ways. like zakharova has exceptional technique and beautiful extensions. murphy still has beautiful technique, some would argue as good as zakharova, but she definitely has much more emotion.

it just blows me away everytime i see this variation. she's divine. i mean look at her arms, how she moves her head, her face... she is by far the best swan i have ever seen in my entire ballet career. and everyone who says she's cold and shows no emotion must be ignorant or simply blind! of course its a matter of taste whether to like her style or not but people who deny her talent both artistically and technically dont have any sense for ballet.
