Racing is a business and sponsors like a lot of drivers that have less than stellar win records.
When it comes to sponsorship it is as much about off track performance as on, in fact more so. Speaking events, promotions, commercials etc.
John has won quite a few races in his career.
USAC, IMSA, GTP, Rolex, CART, NASCAR, NHRA (2n place top fuel).
Also, don't forget that he had quite a bit of success in fairly mediocre equipment at times.
Not a superstar but not a slouch either.

I can't believe John Andretti is still given a ride. I've seen him trash top of the line cars. Look at this guy's record, he is horrible!
Out of over 70 starts John Andretti only came up with one win even though he drove for some of the most experienced and successful teams.
What a joke! It just goes to show a name can carry someone way farther than competence.
Its too bad much more talented people missed out on a professional carreer because sponsors would rather have a name than talent...
