  • my graduate school pre-screening tapes. I got auditions everywhere I applied, got some wonderful offers, and now I'm a grad student at a fantastic school with fantastic teachers. So, in this case at least, I won my auditions :).

So surprised this video's gotten so many views! Thanks to everyone :) !

    Much Love,

  • However....

Most of those fast tempos are asked for in an audition, and not in a full-orchestra performance scenario. So in light of this, @Haritonov46, it should not simply "be much faster". My next question to you would be, "WHEN should it be much faster? In what scenario?" Because it should not "be much faster" all the time, in every performance, under every conductor.

Look everybody, I'm very appreciative of your comments and compliments. I made this video almost two years ago for

  • Okay to settle the debate, there are some orchestras which will take it fast, like around 132, and in that case, being able to play this excerpt at 140 or even 150 will prove useful. It's like a baseball batter who's warming up before he goes out to the plate; he puts a weight on his baseball bat, even though he won't use it at the plate, and why? Because being able to "swing away" with a weight on will make the "real life scenario" that much easier to accomplish. So, @Haritonov46 has a point

  • haha good thing he didn't have to play that middle b flat

  • @PercussionJustin Good thing indeed... that xylophone had a nasty habit of that one always popping up...

  • That is one of the sweetest renditions I've ever heard of this excerpt. It's a beast to play and you make it look like it's as easy as breathing.

  • @HatsForEveryone Thank you so much! :) What a huge compliment.

  • Nice!!!

  • Awesome playing man, ignore the haters - I think I speak for every percussionist on the planet when I say this is a nightmare of an excerpt I thought you played it very well.

  • @JasonDeCristofaro Thanks so much!

  • like a boss

  • it might just be the way the microphone picked it up, but that xylo really needs a tuning!

  • Yay just learned this and im 13 great video by the way. It was sick

  • I'm impressed!!

  • @Haritonov46 Quarter Note= 112 in the score, but performance tempo with orchestra Quarter Note= 120-126 (my understanding). Audition Quarter Note= 122-132

  • @UKperc11

Some conductors may preffer Quarter Note = 132. That's why we should show readiness for 140.

  • one of the best performances on youtube..

  • The tempo is fine.

  • Not bad but good enough too. Should be much faster!!

  • @Haritonov46 really? What audition did you win with a blazing fast porgy? go away.

    Nice excerpt UKperc11

  • @armswim10

Should I understand your "go away" as prohibition to express my oppinion in here?

  • @Haritonov46

Lets leave being a stuck up a-hole to all the other classical musicians. Percussionists are supposed to be the supportive laid back people. This guy just shredded Porgy and Bess and all you can do is criticize. Nice stuff UKperc11! You don't "express your opinion" on youtube (and spell "opinion" wrong). You saying "should be much faster" just lets me know how AWESOME you are.

  • @Haritonov46 No, simply a request for you to reconsider your facts in relation to this excerpt. I would like to now jump on @bucksnbucks band wagon and agree 100% with him and honestly most of the percussion community. Just because you think you may have a larger percussion penis than the rest of us, does not mean that you truly do. Shall we "whip them out" and decide? So in short...go away...say what you will, but @UKperc11 has a kick ass recording and will probably win an audition before you

  • @armswim10

Too many words and too little sense. Nevertheless I don't tell you: GO AWAY.

You have all rights to babble on in here.

  • @Haritonov46 You sure don't. So here I am, writing above your reading level.

  • @armswim10: "So here I am..."

Sorry, but I don't give a fuck about where you are.

  • @Haritonov46 Why don't you put a recording of your excerpt online? Then we can decided if your tempo is correct..it will most likely be too fast.

  • @armswim10

Once again: in the case of this excerpt there is no such a thing as "too fast tempo". The faster - the better.
