I once flew an ex-National DC10! It was an American Airlines flight from ORD-LAX in 1988. It was registered N145AA, which was formerly N60NA for National.
I wont call this a great airline if you think about the bombing of flight 967 on 16th november 1959 and the bombing of flight 2511 on 6th January 1960 and let us not forget flight 27 when a pore guy was sucked out of the cabin on a National Airlines DC-10 on November 3th 1973 well it is not the worst airline ever when you compare it to Alaska Airlines but still
My very first flight on a plane was back in the early 70s when I was in the 2nd grade and it was on a National Airlines DC-10 from L.A. to Tampa Bay and back. Great memories!
Worked for NA in TPA back in the mid 60's. L B Maytag used to take a 727 out of service to fly his buddies to LAS, etc. Played hell with the schedule when he did.
@eileenfitz1965 My first flight was in 1976, I was 5. I flew with my mom from New York down to Miami with National, and I still remember the Stewardess. She was so nice and pretty. Hahhaha, I was just a 5 year old kid, but I told her that I thought she was pretty, and she was so nice, she brought me all this cool NA stuff to take with me, playing cards, drink stirrers, a plastic toy plane, etc. One of my best memories on that airline.
tonybklyn, you hit the nail on the head! Both were great, I flew with NAL '63-77 but had friends who stayed with Pan Am until the end, others went to United and many went with Delta.
Deregulation started this huge down fall of these wonderful airlines that are now just a great memory! Passengers will never be treated as we treated them when I flew.
I remember as a kid flying a National 747 from JFK to Miami. It had to be around 1972. I was 8 years old and during the flight the only thing that I remember was the pilot actually coming through the cabin and pinning some plastic wings on my chest. What a thrill. Sun King will always hold a special place in my heart. I yearn for those days when flying now!!!!
@jimdep333 I'm with you! My first flight was with National when I was a kid, from JFK to Miami, I around 1976, I was 5. This may sound crazy & unbelievable, but I still remember the Stewardess, I was a little kid, I told her she was very pretty and she brought me all this cool NA stuff, playing cards, a little plane, a bunch of stuff. Later the pilot walked through the cabin and gave me my plastic wings. One of the best memories I had being w/ my mom and flying what I called then, "The Sun Plane
correct, many more regionals and nationals (no pun intended) that have all since been bought or merged into the few that remain. also, competition from low-cost carriers forced some airlines out of some markets. get forced out of enough high margin markets and you can lose quite a bit of money in a hurry.
Absolutely LOVE the DC-10! I get to see them all the time driving by Fed-Ex at LAX on the way to work. I'm even more of an L-1011 fan though!

Never flown national, but beatiful colors, and heard they had great services. too bad they merge with PAN AM and commited suciece together.

More like a "murder-suicide". Both were great airlines that were totally uncompatible in every way. I flew for Pan Am as an F/A from 75-78.
