  • The music from the original airing (before they changed it for the dvd so they didn't have to pay the royalties) was "Forever Nightshade Mary" by the Latin Playboys, a side project of David Hidalgo from Los Lobos. I recommend hunting down that song if you want to know what the end of this episode originally sounded like. It's a beautiful, amazing song. (Not sure where people are getting the Billy Joel song, that's not what aired in the original episode any more than the song in this video is.)

  • Dodo Greene - Hold On

    Enjoy.

  • @krizziz Thanks so much. :-))) Very very larg respect.

    Thank you:-))

"Már vagy 5 éve keresem ezt a számot, leírná neki valaki aki jobban ír angolul?"

  • it was not new york state of mind. I know billy Joel. and that was not it ! I would like to know what it is though !

  • BEST TV SHOW EVER!!!!!!!!!!

  • Does anyone know this song at the end of the DVD version of Joel's departure on the Ferry?

  • So has anyone figured out the song that's played in the DVD version?

  • Original song was "New York State of Mind" Billy Joel.

  • Does anyone kow the title of the end song?

  • Too bad Joel was surrounded by paradise (including Maggie) and all he could think about was Urban Sprawl.

  • give up alaska for new york? NEVA

  • So great to see this scene again..Maggie's sweet apology..Marilyn's knowing goodbye..so much in here. Joel was always in a New York state of mind..even though he tried. I really miss this show. Nothing can compare to it to me.

  • I seriously want to know the song, and singer that is being sung on the ferry from the dvd version when joel goes back to NY.. Please email ruygatheart@yahoo.com, Thanks.

  • this show just did not work without joel.

  • I hate that they changed the music at the end. But still, great scene...makes me tear up still to this day.

  • @clearlyblurry Refresh my memory...what was the original music? Yeah, I just don't "feel" it with this song. I remember feeling more somber when I first saw it...

  • Great acting !!!!

  • What's the name of the song sung at the end?

  • Northern Exposure is a state of mind

  • Una delle cose più belle che abbia mai visto...

  • I really prefer the original version, forever nightshade mary.. but does somebody know what song is THIS? it's a good song if you don't consider the NX episode.

How magic it was, Nothern Exposure, the greatest show I've ever seen! SO full of SENSE.

  • hi, does anyone know what song this is?

  • Is New York a city, or a dream? Maybe it's both.

  • Why they changed the music in the end on dvd? The original music was much better.

One of my favourites NX episodes, I always cry when I'm watching it.

  • I lOVE THIS PART of NE. on of my fav's, besides "up river".....my only problem is the song & the end, i havnt seen this in almost 10 years and i remember it being "night shade mary night"....one of the reason i fell in love with this scene..besides the fact it represnets all that is

  • Most emotive scene from NX from me, thanks.

  • I hated that he went back to New York not just because it was the death of the show, but because it meant that the character Joel didn't really end up changing at all.

  • i cried.

joel and maggie are so cute.

  • "everything, all I never said..."

    "me too"

    yeah, I cried as well

  • Look! The Trade Towers! And look again! Big jets flying into those trade towers! Wow, huh?!

  • RIP Joel.

THe O Connel curse was real I guess. He should have known better.

  • My favorite show of all time!!! This episode really epitomizes the brilliance of the show. Maggie and Joel. From the tension filled bickering early in the show, to the silence that can only mean goodbye. There is a moral, you just have to remember the one that got away, and how perfect a goodbye could really be.

  • Favourite show of all time. Favourite episode. This scene always makes me cry!!! Thanks so much for posting! I have the original version taped on vhs, i didnt recognise the music they played here, and it didnt sound right to me at all. I totally agree aceab24, the original was FAR more magical! they must have had probs getting dvd rights or something, its the only possible reason they changed it. Still, it was good to see again. Joel & Maggie! xxx This whole episode KILLS me every time.

  • Back to this scene: It's quite interesting that Joel wanted to go back to NYC continuously because he always mentioned it almost in every episode. Finally he found himself and he went back there when he could imagine it least of all. That's why I like this scene very much because it has message for everyday life. Altough it's valid for all episodes.

  • The David Schwartz music remains since he was the composer, and that def reminds me of the show. It was the best TV show ever. I loved it when Marilyn instinctively felt that Joel was on a soul journey.

But for die hards like myself who never missed an episode, what they did is a travesty.

In the ferry scene, try turning down that Rosemary Clooney or whatever it is and instead play the original song and you'll see how magical it was.

  • Ok, I tried it out and it's really better for that scene. It's a bit more gloomy song while the 2nd version is more optimistic, maybe. I like both of them. Btw here in Hungary they played only the 1st 4 seasons on TV so I know the others only in English and only from the net. But it was a great surprise for me when I realized that there are more seasons, not only 4.

  • hi, what do u mean " only from the net"? Is there a way to see the episodes on line, streaming or download them? thanks

  • Ok, I see... I was not aware of this. Thanks for the info!

  • How do you mean that the music is not the original? I did not change it... only cut this part from the movie. Or is there another version? If yes, then what is the original song?

  • When it was released on DVD the company had to change almost all of the original music (which was so crucial to Northern Exposure) because of various legal reasons, or they didn't want to spend the money for rights. So they supplemented different background music. This is the reason I won't buy the box sets...it's just not the same.

Forever Nightshade Mary by the Latin Playboys was originally playing, and it fit so well.

  • gosh, what a shame! that's really too bad :(

  • That was great but the music at the end is not the original. Vinx was playing while he was on the ferry.
