@shipwreck222 I tested it many years ago, and in the time it was pretty feature rich/complete with the default install. I imagine it is even better nowadays. It already comes with a lot of samples by default.
@shipwreck222 Yes, it is worth a try in my opinion. It's a pretty polished Digital Audio Workstation. From Wikipedia description: "Music can be produced by synthesizing sounds, arranging samples, and playing on a MIDI keyboard by combining the features of trackers, sequencers and synthesizers. It supports LADSPA and VST plugins."
@robertvoice utau:no like melodyne but almost you record the phonemes with your voice, in wav and put it in a folder, and then becomes a voicebank, is make your own virtual singer, with the software and your voice ^w^ is difficult, but I think it's fun in japonese (no mine but epic OWO): watch?v=tF89RAn-q_s in english (mine ^w^): watch?v=t2ST3Uc6LkM vocaloid:comes with the singer (and not free) vocaloid cv3 megurine luka bilingual japonese and english demo english: /watch?v=k0vVCrgOIzc
@blissfullwarrior hmm, LAME coder for .mp3 format? anyway, if you need it in MP3 soo bad, then get audacity for Linux. It should be in the repository. good luck ;D
Thank you for the video. I was wondering if you could recommend some good VST's that will work in Linux/Ubuntu DAWS (do I need WINE for that?). Also, are Ubuntu softsynths good enough that they are complete softsynth solutions or are there WIndows based softsynths that you can recommend that will augment my Ubuntu recording setup in a positive fashion?
I am no professional musician, but i discussed the same questions you made a while ago on the below comments, take a look, but i don't know well about VST's and DAWS, so i can't help you much, sorry : /
Thanks! But i did nothing really! I just played one sample song that came with the app and showed some of it's UI behavior, although i made some songs, which, i didn't considered to be good enough to be worth a upload.
arrggg.. Im new to the world of Linux and wondering if someone can help? pleeese!!! i have just installed linux 9.04 & was wondering about this real time kernel thingy and see its on ubuntu studio shoukd i do i re-install to benifit from the media extras it offers or could i just download the software like lmms etc... oh what is a kernal? im a dumb ass i know!!
You probably have Ubuntu. I recommend you to install just the default LMMS,to install LMMS just go to the menu Applications > Add/Remove software, on the search box, type LMMS,check the box next to the application name for installation, and click Apply and wait the installation to finish. All what Ubuntu Studio have, you can install on the default Ubuntu.
About what is a kernel:

Yeah you are right I did want to do it inside the program as you would with Cubase or any other DAW. But I looked up some documentation and it said that this is not possible, and the way to record audio is to use Audacity.
I spose it's not too different to other DAWs, as you would need to use an external wave editor to edit your audio files anyway.
Ah ok. There is Ardour and Jokosher too, you can pre-produce in Audacity and Ardour or Jokosher and pos-produce in LMMS, for example. But there are a lot of other editors/options/workflow methods.
I found the solution to this for anyone who's interested. You use Audacity to record and clip the audio, and import the audio file to a sample track in LMMS.
I downloaded as soon as I read the description. Thanks man. And I haven't tried the program yet but there are a ton of open source music and sound files on sounddogs. Check it out.
One question, how do I find this on Add/Remove in Ubuntu? I can't find it. PLEASE HELP! I wanna switch to this, cause is seems to be much less heavy on the CPU compared to FL Studio.
Anyway, i think it's not on Add/Remove (I don't know why), but it is on Synaptic. Go to the panel menu: System > Administration > Synaptic Package manager
When it opens, type "lmms" on it's search box, mark the box to install, and click on "Apply" button, wait for the installation process do end and you're ready to go :]
It's not Fruity Loops. And it's not a "Linux" version of Fruity Loops.
And it's not "Linux" version. Linux is a Open Source OS kernel. Applications under GPL license are called GNU Applications. A Open Source OS that use Linux kernel is called GNU/Linux.
So, LMMS is a GNU/Linux Application. And yes, it's Free and Open Source.
Hmm, in that video, i just loaded one single sample, with a loooooot of beats, so it's nothing special, just a slow load for a loooong music sample. To change the time, just "light" the "green big dots" in different places of the rhythm table and later edit it's execution time/place on the music (when it starts, stop, ends, etc) in the uper time tables. Or, edit it time manualy with the MIDI keyboard (Physical or virtual, do not matter).
I have one question, since I'm cheap and didn't bother with fruityloops, I need to make some drum tracks for my guitar work, just how? I'm really a beginner in software and things. Any advice were I could get some help?(for LMMS)
i don't have linux yet, but how do you get a midi device to work properly? in windows, you have to install drivers, but i can't find any drivers for linux.
GNU/Linux don't use "Drivers". It's not needed. GNU/Linux comes with all services servers, modules, services and aplications that in combination with linux kernel, recognizes and setup all your Hardware automaticaly. Some times, you need a controller app for a specific Hardware to work properly, or even a Driver if that Hardware was built only for WIndows, you can search for Open Source Drivers in that case, or if the Hardware manufacturer produce Drivers for GNU/Linux you can use that.
im totally new to linux with an acer aspire one (120 gb version) an i cant for the life of me figure out how to install this program :( can anyone help :P much appreciated cant wait to use it!

vocaloid:a program with several singers (just japonese and english)where you can use the voices as you want
utau: a fan-made of vocaloid(more difficult) but you can make your singer with your voice
mmd(miku miku dance):software 3d to make music videos of vocaloid (too utau)
sorry for the ortographic horror ¬///¬

Hi KernelScript, i just stumbled across your video and i want to check it out LMMS when i get home. I usually use Logic.
I had a question maybe you could answer. Do you know of any OSS similar to Reason or Ableton Live?
If this is not the place to ask, i'm sorry.
jdtobe 2 years ago
Hi jdtobe, i never used either Reason or Ableton Live. But i know some FOSS like audio production tools:
Ableton Live - Freewheeling, Ardour, LMMS and Rosegarden.
Reason - ZynAddSubFX, Oxygen, Rosegarden and LMMS.

Hey KernelScript, Just got LMMS and have been playing round with it. Like it a lot, BUT.
What about recording audio. I read that you are meant to record in Audacity and then import this as a sample. Is there any better way of doing this?

Hi Jonathan,
You can record samples with the virtual keyboard, other than that i don't know.
