@blastcornlow no, actually he's not. I really hate it when ppl talk about MC like he's the best spartan. HE IS NOT. He is just lucky, as Cortana says. The highest class of spartans are the headhunters who were mostly hidden by ONI. MC would have died before Halo CE if it weren't for other spartans, specifically Kelly, Linda and Fred. He didn't use to go solo very much.

@RC1207RC While it's true that the Chief is not the strongest, fastest, smartest, or best shot among the S-IIs, don't forget that in the same part of the "Fall of Reach" book where Dr. Halsey admits all of this, she ALSO states that she considers him the luckiest and bravest, and the best one OVERALL. True, Fred is probably the most skilled of the lot, but the books give the impression that he prefers to be in the background too much to really pull off the Chief's style of heroics.

@Daclassicx7 Actually, according to Ghosts of Onyx, the first SPARTAN-III company was formed about 21 years before the Fall of Reach. Also, on Reach's official website, there's a message from Kurt to Mendez where he basically says that he pulled Six out of Beta Company right after S-III training. Various other official sources like the Essential Visual Guide, as well as a host of various promotional materials, also point out that everyone in Noble Team except Jorge is a Spartan-III.

@Alexthapanda the spartan 1 program was called the Orion Project, and yes Johnson was a member. although the genetic problems caused most members to have genetic abnormalities and it was disbanded, that's why Johnson was immune to the flood.

Spartan 2s are Geneticaly augmented soldiers the UNSC took as children and the same with Spartan 3s they just dumbed down the augments sence a good portion of the Spartan 2s were taken out because their bodies couldnt process the augments.

And that's not counting the 7 S-IIs from Grey Team and Team Black, none of whom were at the Battle of Reach, nor Maria, who was last seen at a Korean testing facility right before the Covenant invaded Earth.

(a common cover name) ,but when you are in the warthog with buck he might say "keep it steady James" and bucks first name is Edward so i know he isn't talking to himself. so from what i can gather from what is cannon, his name is James D. and no he is not a spartan.
