  • OMG THAT IS SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO GOOD!!!!!!!!!

  • @HorseComeTrue13 Hello there! Thank you so much!! :)) Roby

  • Well, I'm leaving for work, I have to paint a horse today. A 10 foot tall horse I cut out of plywood.

I came here to get some pointers on a little detail for my work, but, OMG! So now...I'm not sure if this helped or intimidated the crap out of me. But I'm going to try to do it just like you did it. Might be a little bit overkill for what I'm doing but I don't think I can resist trying lol. Thank you for making me want to be better. Kim Capp

  • @aboutsigns2 OMG Kim, you just gave me goose bumps! So generous with your comments, I very much appreciate it! Go for it, nothing to loose, right! Just think of it as colors, contrasts and values instead of what it actually is that you're painting, that really works. I'd like to think that I actually helped others along their artistic journey even thought I'm self taught. You learn by doing not any other way. Thank you so much again for making my day today Kim. I'd love to see your project! Roby

  • Wow! I am knocked out by your talent. You are awesome. I am an artist. I thought I was pretty good lol until I saw you. It's funny because people say to me, "How do you do that?",

and now here I am. How do you do that? So incredible, don't ever stop. Thank you for the demonstration.

  • @aboutsigns2 Hello Kim....thanks so much. You're welcome! Like I said, I'd love to see your project, that'd be fun!! Good luck today, go get em!!! :)) Roby

  • Wow love your work! What kind or brand are your color pencils?

  • @nonniesview Hello! Thanks so much for the nice comment. I'm using CarbOthello pastel pencils in combination with stick pastels. My favorite brands are Unison, Sennelier, Schmincke and Rembrandt. My paper is Bristol Board 500 series cold press Vellum or rag illistration board. Thanks again :)) Roby

  • this has to be fake. no one is that talented. ahhhhh so amazingggg

  • @icehorse91 Hello! Ha, ha....that's so nice! Thanks so much for the great comment, much appreciated! :)) Roby

  • hello! ive been drawing horse for about a year, yet I cant do anything with the paints I have, what would be the best paint to start off a beginner

  • @1002Lollipop Hello! If you have access to more mediums give them all a try and you'll find what fits for you. No matter what you choose it takes practice so don't give up especially if you love painting. I'm using pastels and I love them but choosing a medium is a personal thing. Good luck.... :)) Roby

  • @robertarobybaer thanks! ill try posting a vid of some of my pencil drawings! im really starstruck to have had advice from someone with such talent

  • @1002Lollipop Awwww, you're welcome! :)) Roby

  • Hello, this is absolutely amazing! I don't know how you find all the right colors, and the time not to mention! I love to draw horses although I'm not nearly as talented as you are, I wanted some advice on a painting I have yet to start. Its going to be of a horse, but I have no idea what else I want to put in it, do you have any suggestions?

  • @adriennewinner7 Hello! Thank you so much for your great comment! I have been practicing a lot of years now and I love horses. I was fortunate to have lived on a small ranch so I've had a lot of exposure to horses. As for your background... don't know, you'll have to decide that one for yourself. Just depends...some of my paintings I have no defined background, others, a complete background. If you do the entire horse you'll have to do a little something to ground it. Simple works!! :)) Roby

  • FA PAURA! ehm..I can't believe it!this eye..lives!!

  • @emyprinci Hello there! Thank you! I love horses and I think that their eye's say so much, can't get enough of them! :)) Roby

  • that's amazing!!!! i loved the detail in the eye!!

  • @973countrygirl Hi! Thanks so much for your nice comment! It's one of my favorite videos, I love horses so much! Thanks again! :)) Roby

  • Too well drawn! It's too well detailed and everything! It ... beautiful ~

  • @Chocola0121 Hello there! Thanks so much for that great comment!! :)) Roby

  • Roby: You do extraordinary work! I am blown away watching you painstakingly apply the color & texture for nearly every hair on the animal's coat. Your technique is so fascinating; the way you build the color & use the "next" chalk color to blend the previous layer rather than smudging or smearing with a kneaded eraser or fingers or paper stomp --- way cool! How do you sharpen your pencils? They have excellent points. Do you use a fixative on the finished product? If so, what do you use?

  • @DexGypMom Hello! Thank you so much for your great comments. I love that you get that I blend with the next color, you're the first to mention that. I use the X-ACTO Powerhouse electric sharpener. I get them at Office Max. You'll need an awl to get the broken off pastel points that sometimes get lodged that sometimes happens, especially when the sharpener get dull. I don't use any fixative, personal choice but they leave little dots, darken, render your painting no longer archival! :) Roby

  • Would you paint my horse if i sent you a picture????

  • @Rockaran100 Hi! I do accept a few commission pieces each year. Let me know if you're interested and we can discuss my timeline and pricing. Thank you for asking! :)) Roby

  • I was mesmerized watching how you achieved the reflection of you and the fence in the eye. Fantastic work !!

  • @Sweenart Hello! Thank you so very much for your nice comment, that's great! It's funny how you don't see the details until you really look!! : Thanks again! :))

  • this inspired me to go and continue a horse painting i had started ,,,,,

even though this picture makes mine look like a kindergartener drew it! heehee

the eye is nothing less than a real one ;)

  • @fanappaloosa Oh.... that's great! Good for you! Thank you very much for your nice comment! :)) Roby

  • @emma00abnormal Awww that's so cute, thanks very much!!! I have practiced a lot of years with the pastels. :))))

  • I am a young artist, and i have one major question. Might i ask what kind of utensils you use mainly in your artwork?

  • @deathair4 Hello! My utensils are as follows. I use Bristol Board 500 cold press Vellum paper. My pastel stick brands are Unison, Sennelier, Rembrandt, Schmincke to name my favorites and my pencils are CarbOthello pastel pencils. I use the X-ACTO Powerhouse pencil sharpener that I get at Office Max. The paper and pastels I usually get a Dick Blick here on line. Good luck! :))

  • @robertarobybaer Thank you. :)

  • omg god its so realistic i almost tried to rub it myself ts so amazing i like to draw horses but i find their muzzles are kinda hard your sooo amazing

  • Omg how pretty!!! O.O

  • @HeartlandxBuecher Hello! Thanks so much! :))

  • Oh wow. Thank you so much for uploading (: This is very beautiful. I love how you didn't take the easy way out like I would have and just draw the eye totally black with a little shine. You drew the reflection of the fence beautifully! Keep painting forever!!! You have a gift!

  • @FireDash13 Thank you so very much!!! I appreciate your kind words and I certainly will continue with the painting as long as I possibly can!!!!! Thanks again! :))

  • Hi there, could you please kindly advice me as to what paper, pencils and chalk are the best to use please? Also, what camera do you film with and what program do you use to edit your videos? Thank you SO SO much! i really appreciate any advice!

  • @kohlermichelle Hello! My paper is Bristol Board 500 series cold press Vellum. The pencils are CarbOthello pastel pencils and I get both at Dick Blicks here on line. My soft pastel sticks are brands such as Sennelier, Unison, Schmincke and Rembrandt. My camera is a Nikon Coolpix P90. As for the program I don't know as my friend does the editing for me. Good luck! :))

  • SO DARN GOOD!

  • very very very nice!! ;) great!

  • @Madlus27 Thanks so much! :))

  • is the white pencil like a smudger or what please tell me i am a huge fan of ur work, even though i only watched two videos.

  • @missninjadave Hello! The white pencil is a CarbOthello pastel pencil. I use my fingers to smudge and the pastel pencils for the fine detail and for blending in combination with the soft pastel sticks. I get my pencils at Dick Blick here on line along with my paper of choice which is Bristol Board 500 series cold press. Thanks again for the nice comment. Good luck! :))

  • @robertarobybaer thank you so much that reaally helped, watching your art gives me so much inspiration

  • @missninjadave That's great, thanks!! :))

  • You're welcome Claudette! :)

  • Thanks for your fast reply.

One of your many fans, Claudette.

  • @creativebeam1 :)))!!

  • WOW is it beauty! What is this technique? I like you :D

  • @blackdragonflay Hello! Thanks for your nice comment! I use soft pastels sticks and CarbOthello pastel pencils. My paper of choice is Bristol Board 500 series Vellum cold press. :))

  • Amazing very inspirational

  • @SpiritWolfBeliever Thank you very much! :))

  • To protect your finished paintings. What do you use? Thanks a bunch.

  • @creativebeam1 Hi, I don't use anything. Fixatives will darken the painting and leave little spots but most of all it will leave your painting no longer archival. For those reasons I choose not to use them. I get them framed right away or store them in a box. :))

  • that's phenomenal!

  • @siirifani4ever Thanks so much! :))

  • This is amazing beyond reason. All of it looks real and it in more then inspiring! Thanks for sharing!

  • @FlaxenRamDAILY Hi! Thanks for your very nice comment. I appreciate you taking the time to give me a compliment on my artwork!!! :)))

  • wow, great. what pencils and stuff do you use? drom derwent or what?

  • @CuteApplePiie Thanks! I use Bristol Board 500 series cold press paper. No oil pastels. I use the higher end pastel sticks such as Schmincke, Unison, Sennelier, Rembrandt and Grumbacher to name a few. I love the CarbOthello pastel pencils as they are how I achieve my fine detail. I use the X-ACTO Powerhouse electric sharpener for the great points I can get on the Carbo's and I get that sharpener at Office Max. :)

  • aaaaah. its real o.o

  • @mermieze Thanks, how nice!

  • Beautiful work!

  • @MsJelloG Thank you!!

  • Amazing and inspiring. Can you share with us which brand of Pastels were used here? The colors and the texture are really awesome.

  • @Indevor Thanks!!!! Yes, I can share...my stick pastels are Unison, Schmincke, Rembrandt, Grumbacher, to name a few and my pencils are CarbOthello pastel pencils and I get those at Dick Blick here on line. My paper of choice is Bristol Board 500 cold press. Thanks again! :))

  • you make this looks so easy....

    you're truely gifted!

  • DONT SUCK! (no mames en español) this is super amazing....that eye reflection was TERRIFIC! great detail grreat

  • @TheKevin1980 Thanks for the grreeat comment!!!!

  • @robertarobybaer jajaja xD

  • @TheKevin1980 :))))

  • This is breath taking! The detail in this is amazing! When I saw the thumb nail I was considering whether it was a real picture or a drawing like the title said! You are amazing!

  • @snowballjet Hello! Thank you for your lovely comments, you're very sweet! I appreciate it! :))

  • I tried to draw an eye with a reflection in it and epically failed , lol.

  • @artmaster211 Oh no! Keep trying!!! :)))))

  • @artmaster211Don't think of it as an eye, think about the tons a values and try to duplicate that. Remove the fact that it's reflection from your mind, think in terms of different colors and try it again. :))))))

  • I work with pastel pencils and you have to sharpen the hell out of them to get that much definition that small. Great job!

  • @artmaster211 Thanks so much!! Enjoyed seeing your lovely paintings!

  • YOUR WORK IS AMAZING, I SKETCH MY SELF AND HAVE USED DIFFERENT MEDIUMS BUT I WANT TO GO BACK TO PASTELS,, YOU MAKE IT LOOK SO EASY,, I GET DISCOURAGED SOMETIMES BUT I KNOW PRATICE MAKES PERFECT,, THANK YOU FOR YOUR VIDEOS,, I HOPE I CAN LEARN ALOT.,,AND GET HALF AS GOOD AS YOU,, MUCH ART LOVE DEBBIE

  • @debrick1978 Hi Debbie! Thanks so much for your lovely comments, so much appreciated! You're right when you say practice makes perfect. There are dues to be paid but hard work always gets rewarded. Good luck with your pastels and happy painting!!! Roby

  • Hello! Thank you for you very nice comment, just wonderful! I haven't used too many other papers because I just love the Bristol board. I also use rag illistration board as it has the same great tooth for my style. I have found that with the Carbo pencils you can't smudge them with your finger or they will nearly disappear. When used in combination with the pastel sticks do very well. I haven't used the sanded papers but wanted to try but I need my fingerprints and to not grind off my leads! :))

  • Hi Roberta! Your videos are breathe taking! I can just watch them over and over again all day long! Im' just starting with pastels myself, and I was used to Ingres but recently I got a sample of Fisher 400 and loved it. Did you ever try those? If yes, how different they are from the Bristol 500? Also, I have PITT pencils and Rembrandt, but Fisher 400 doesn't allow me to blend the background without taking off my fingerprints (lol). I read you use Rembrandt as well. Could it be the paper? Thanks!

  • It's just beautiful. I really wish I could draw as well as you.

  • @TeamSeymour Thank you so much for your kind comment, very nice!

  • GORGEOUS!!

You have such an amazing gift. I would love to be able to be as good as you. I know that good photos are essential.Do you take your own reference photos?

I work with suede paper but this makes me want to try to work with paper again. The first attempts with paper were not so good. What paper do you use if I may ask? Also, do you use a fixative?

Also, have you considered doing a video showing the viewers how you have everything set up (camera also) in your studio?

  • @customanimalart Hello! Thank you very much for your nice commment! I do take most of my own reference photos. The paper that I use is Bristol Board 500 cold press and also rag illistration board. They have a great tooth for my style of painting, not too textured. I don't use any fixatives as they tend to darken and leave little spots after spraying and your painting is no longer archival. As for your last question, the jury is out, but I'm mulling it around! :))

  • Let me know when you do it, I may help with questions =)

  • @scabrero :)))

  • Thank you so much for your patient with me, I will give them a try some time soon!

I will suggest you to make a video with the materials you use and why vs. all the variety that's is out there. I think your fans (like me =) ) and the learners will highly appreciate it. I know it wont be an easy task but I am sure it will help a lot of people and you will get more followers!! again, like me =)

  • @scabrero Thank you for your suggestion, I have considered doing such a video, you never know!! :)))

  • Amazing! The eye looks SO glossy and dimensional! You have an awesome talent, and so much consistency!

  • @TheDecoyDude Thank you so much!! I really enjoy doing eyes!

  • Very good my friend very good

  • @turelsut1 Thanks so much!! :))

  • This is amazing beyond words :0 Thank you so much for posting these videos :)

  • @TheHorseLady1212 Thanks, I reallly appreciate your comment and you're welcome for the videos! :))

  • Hi! Roberta, could you tell me what brand of pastels pencils/bars you use? they seems to blend really well =)

  • @scabrero Hello there! I use CarbOthello pastel pencils (Dick Blick carries them) and several of the top brands of pastel sticks such as, Rembrandt, Schmincke, Unison, Sennelier. Schmincke is soooo soft and buttery and is well used at the end of your painting for the finishing touches of color. =))

  • @robertarobybaer Thanks for the information Roberta =) is just that I started with pastels watching Colin Bradley videos and he uses Faber Castle Pitt pastel pencils, and since I don't know any better I thought on asking you because we are on the same path ;) and there are a lot of brands that confuses when you are a beginner..... are they ok ? or there is something better out there...... thank you for getting back to me =)

  • @scabrero You're welcome for the info! The Pitts are fine but are a little snug fitting into my X-ACTO Powerhouse sharpener, The Carbs fit very nicely and are lightfast. They are rated by stars on the CarbOthello pencils, the more stars the better. They blend very well in combination with the stick pastels.

  • I can't believe that such talent exists!!!!!!!! What a joy to watch " Self Portrait" come to life. How cleaver. That eye is just crazy good! You are ONE AWESOME ARTIST!! Thank you for sharing your unbelievable talent with all of us!!!!!!!!!!

  • @becsvet1 Another knock me off my socks comment!!! WOW!!! Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a beautiful comment on my video. It's people like you and the other wonderful people willing to comment that make my day and my year, THANK YOU!!!!! :)))))
