spain, charming isnt it? alicia de la rocha is one of the best interpreters of Albeniz, who capture so well the essence of this beautiful land. Hope you enjoied your trip
Spanish music is so incredible. Just listened to de Larrocha for the first time a few weeks ago and i'm hooked now. Everytime i listen i feel like I'm visiting Spain again, watching flamenco dancing or seeing the beautiful women in Madrid. What a rich country, so full of life.
Albeniz and Granados should both be better known. I guess they got short shrift because they sound too spanish. I love Albeniz' sense of harmony/ melody. As far as I'm concerned Debussy could use some more flat 2nds and 6ths.
I guess Debussy does use b6. Wagner was fond of this too. If I remember right the use of b6in his music was supposed to represent a false reality or "dream world". I think when b2 and b6 are used together you get Spanish Impressionism. Was Debussy trying to sound Spanish, or was Albeniz trying to sound French? Or both?
They both are very well known in my world. I play as much as I can of their music and love them both very much. Such exquisite feelings and rhythm. I admit I am more partial to Albeniz. He is one of my all time favorites. It brought tears to my eyes to hear the way he died. Alicia de Larrocha is a great interpreter of his music.
I think his fate was very ironic. He apparently had an inordinate fear of water but in order to perform in the USA had to travel (reluctantly) by ship. He would have sailed home on earlier vessels had he not been invited to fulfill a last-minute "command" performance for Pres.Wilson. Upon his return, the channel ship (Sussex) he was on was torpedoed; however, he was safe on a life boat but dove in and drowned in an attempt to save his drowning wife.
I had no idea that he [Granados] escaped the torpedoed ship, one can only wonder how many more beautifull works he would have composed had he survived. But most importantly, it is a shame that he and his wife were deprived of their twilight years together.
I am obsessed with this piece!

Her playing has such unforced nobility. It reminds me of the pure sound of Dinu Lipatti.

What a terrible fate for the great Granados to have been blown up by a german torpedo!I believe it was the sussex he was on at the time.

He drowned, however, trying to save his wife who had gone overboard. They did not know how to swim either one
