how are Giant Schnauzers? Iread lots about them of course, but alot of people give negative feedback when talking about Giants. I've read and been told they are one of the best guard dogs and extremely bold. some people say they are too bold. i'm not getting one ,just have always been interested in the breed.

@lexy4719 I've had my current GS for 9 years and I love the breed. Although, I'd never recommend one for an inexperienced dog owner or someone who doesn't think they'd be able to handle a lot of hyper, clumsy energy.
They are so affectionate, and it's true they are VERY bold and make great guard dogs (they get very attached to their ppl and space). Mine has gone after a dog that attacked me once, she backed off as soon as I called. And no one gets into my house without her barking at them.
i have a giant schnauzer and they are not agressive until they want to be, i have a male and he protects me no matter what, he is my body gaurd!! if anyone enter the house hewll grow until he know who they are or gets to know them! best dog iv ever know .
@TheBirdbe Exactly! My girl does too. She barks at anyone coming into the house until she knows who they are. She's perfectly ppl and dog friendly unless they instigate something. She's my body guard.
This is the first time I hear the Giant Schnauzer barking, and definitely agree that they will make good guardians. Who will dare to get closer with that bark?
Have you ever had problems with the Giant Schnauzers being too aggressive with your acquaintances or friends?
I got a small one, but my friends got giant too. You must be very careful and patient at the grow-up phase, and socialize them. If you do well, there's no problem with them at all. The giants are very playful, but dont raise your hands on the owner.
@mariuspy I've had mine for 9 years, and I've never had problems with her being too aggressive unless they are deemed a threat. She'll bark/growl at my friends/brother if she thinks they are being too rough with me or I'm getting upset. But she has also protected me from another dog that attempted to attack me.
So, no, I haven't had problems with her, but they are very sensitive to their persons moods when interacting with visitors. If I'm upset then she's upset.
Great dogs. I have a GS but I also had a Great Dane but it died. I also have a cross-breed between the male GS and the female GD and I can say that Great Danes are more intelligent than the GS.
I had 2 Great Danes, one after the other, just before my Giants and, although they were lovely dogs, I would never want to go back to them.
Danes are not long-lived and suffer from various of problems as a breed, due to their size. They are not very intelligent.
Giants are very clever and, should live 12 to 14 years. Be aware though, they need plenty of exercise and would not take well to being left alone for long periods, if you go to work. I work from home so this is not a problem.
Thanks for the valuable information. I'm leaning more towards the GS. The grooming seems to be a big responsibility, though. With regards to the beard and drinking water, do your floors just stay wet?
Just got a New dog too, I will be so sad if one of them go. Maggie the G.S. is a great watch dog and so fun to watch and play with... I have 3 videos for now.....
This hecka reminded me of that old deaf dog on the old 101 Dalmatians cartoon. "Two barks, one yip, and a woof." Does anyone else know what I'm talking about? Anyway, these dogs look funny bounding about. I hadn't ever heard of Giant Schnauzers.
Sadly, Archie has been diagnosed with osteosarcoma (bone cancer) and will not be with me for too much longer. my life is on hold until this is over. I love all my dogs but Archie turned out to be the dog love of my life so I am devastated. I am also worried about Dudley when Archie is gone.

I'm allergic to dogs and someone told me that schnauzers don't shed, is that true?

Schnauzers do shed, but just a little. They don't molt.

My mini is a born hunter. He caught a squirrel once and brought it in the house!

These two resemble my Dobies...the wife and I have to use the term "SQ", because 'squirrel' drives them nuts.

Good News! We now have Arnie, a giant schnauzer puppy who has brought joy to our house after the terrible loss of our Archie.
If dogs don't go to heaven, then when I die, I want to go where they went!
We give dogs time we can spare, space we can spare and love we can spare. And in return, dogs give us their all. It's the best deal man has ever made.

Sadly, Archie died on March 26th at 11:15 am, aged six. He will be desperately missed.

I am so sorry to hear about Archie. He is beautiful, as is Dudley. Thankyou for sharing the videos of your lovely pets.

Thank you for your kind comment. Archie is still with me today and still enjoys his walks on 3 legs.
I will not let him suffer and will do what's best for him, not me, when the time comes.
