yes. I was 13 when I got my first AppleIIe clone. I use to buy a game at the computer store, take it home, press ctrl-break, and read the programming. Then one day they locked all the programming, and all we saw was codes. This infuriated me and at that tender young age, I become a "hacker". The term hacker is best defined in the doc. "The history of Hacking" It all started with the phone company. The underground world of "black equipment". check it out.
Well, I hacked my PSP (Custom Firmware to program and run 3rd party applications and emulators such as Macintosh [Basilisk II], etc), Phone (Samsung A950 to Tether and remove all restrictions), Some software that requires you to upgrade to Vista+ in order to run them, yep, I used my creativity to make them run on my Windows XP box (but never distributed copies, UNLESS they were freeware in the first place). Yep, the more restrictions and cripplings of hardware, the more hacking we shall see...
I will try to keep my definition of a hacker simple. here it goes: A hacker is a person who wants to get more out of something than it was originally intended to serve/do. I do agree with yiou that if companys continue to try to cripple there software and devices they are going to force more people to be creative. And since essentially creativity is hacking. They will force more user to become hackers. Hacking isn't malicious, it's creative.
Once this happens, where the world is surrounded by technology everyone will tweak their devices, and it will be no longer be called hacking it will be called creativity. companies like microsoft google and apple will just have to deal with it.
of course it makes you hackers... but you dont understand the fact that most hacking is not illegal and no your not buying a full computer although you can make them powerful.
and yes you do have the right to do what you want with your own hard ware.
and a hacker is anyone who hacks or modifies anything.. come on! I mean bill gates and steve jobs are hackers thats why we have what we have today...
i think the definition of hacker scales, like jail braking an iphone is hacking but i dont really feel like it makes you a fill fledged hacker because its become to commonplace. a 13 year old with a good tutorial could do it. similar to how a little leager is considered BUT wouldn't be referd to as an athlete.
I completely agree with your definition of hacker, that is what I've always believed it to be. However that isn't what the media and general public deem it to be. The general populous categorize crackers in with hackers most of the time.
Additionally I'd say it's someone who wants to take complete control of his property. As for a generation of them? No, you'll realize more that the average person isn't motivated enough to spend their time on it like we are willing to.
so for me the word hacker is kinda negativ. because in my opinion a hacker doesn't "hack" something in a way that wasn't intended by the creator of this thing. a hacker is more of a person that does something evil like hack MS Windows to create a virus (not that evil, its windows it's a walking security hole), or something like he's cracking some computer games to play them without license etc, in the worst case he uploads it in a torrent so others can play it too, so thats a hacker for me...
but like you said in your comment below mine, my image of a hacker is a little bit different to yours, because i'm from germany and we get some news from time to time like "hacker makes borussia dortmund buys kevin kuranyi" and stuff, where someone hacked the website and created some news like borussia dortmund bought kevin kuranyi. and also the image painted by hollywood is something that might have affected my image of a hacker...
Anyone who claims to be a hacker and steals is not really a hacker, they're a thief. Hollywood paints an image of these so called hackers who rob banks and blow up tanks with computers. It's all bullshit. Real hackers just want to install Apache on their DVR.
I would say a hacker is someone that takes something, gets bored with it or wants more out of it then takes things into their own hands. A world full of hackers would be an awesome thing imo.
i think to be a "hacker" means to go outside the limits or rules set in things like EULA and what not. because hacker kinda come with a connotation of being unethical. but that may just be me
rather then someone who goes above and beyond what its ment to do.. i think a hacker is someone who makes a peice of hardware or software do anything its not suppose to do
if u say "hacker" it sounds so evil :) in my opinion, a hacker is someone who is not satisfied with some product or just wants to know how something is working. So he "plays" with hardware, software and technology TO LEARN,research, to improve or extent products. A Hacker is a Techie, a Sports(not physical), using/imroving things and tools in a uncommon way. like someone buys a car and pimps it up, hackers do that with ipods, software, puters n stuff. so there is nothing EVIL in "Hacker" .
Linux is a shining beacon of awesomeness. However it is not alone. There are a ton of awesome projects that are designed around building and creating.
I think with hardware, even though the companies don't want you to do stuff with it that they didn't intend, they don't explicitly say that you can't do it. They just say that if you do it, it voids the warranty. Or at least that's the first thought that pops into my tired little head. Am I right? Did he die?

I have a question. What kind of hacker's subclass is the one who interferes your life, steal your money, who doesn't realize what's he doing ?
