but it really isnt even obscure at all, and its funny to think that CHIP DAVIS is sitting in LA somewhere balling out of controll while i listen to this for the millionth time, scratching my head. CHIP DAVIS is probably just as confused as i am or maybe he knows exactly what he did, of course... CHIP DAVIS is a genius! just listen to this shit or just look at his photo, old wrinkly dorky white boy money. anyways i geuss the music is pretty funny or just plain weird, i dont know anymore!! PEACE
who the fuck buys this shit? who the fuck is listening to this shit!? is this music for people that dont listen to music? these videos arent exactly getting millions of hits, but as i read all of these comments of memories that people have attatched to this music, i realize this is something that never could have happened in the world we live in now and it almost seems as if this music has been... lost in time. something from our hilarious mind boggling culture that has faded into obscurity
@thefunkiestmothafuka You are obsecurely and absolutely not belonging here . You are tainting the pleasant past , and people still love this song . Now screw you and get the crap out of here!
@Lorden1516 hahahahaha sorry if i offended anybody, you got me all wrong man, i like mannheim steamroller, i was just making an observation. i thought some of the comments were hilarious (have you read the comments?) im not tainting the past, im celebrating it, dont be such a pussy.
heath and his truck LOW LOUD AND NASTY hitting 157.3 SPL in his truck in the summer of 1990?, somebody played this shit at a party? what the fuck!?) had me laughing uncontrollably. I decided to go all the way and ended up at wikipedia, to find this music is the product of brain child CHIP DAVIS? and that he has a succesful string of shitty christmas albums, one being of them being the BEST SELLING ALBUM OF ALL TIME? i mean this shit went double diamond thats 10X platinum, this left me wondering
as i delved deeper into MANNHEIM STEAMROLLER i found the songs that had similar qualities and low and behold the songs i discovered on the GRAMAPHONE SAMPLER that i liked, tocatta being one of them (late 70's early 80's synthy prog rock corn) and plenty of intersting video responses which make sence and some that dont (one about a 50 year old lady having a picnic on her birthday in a forest while blazing tocatta by manheim steamroller and being surrounded by cows?! this is a joke right?)---->
after discovering this GRAMAPHONE SAMPLER featuring music from FRESH AIRE (which i assumed was the name of the band) i had heard two songs on the sampler that were quite decent in a sence that it was a proggressive rock album , i decided to do a bit of research as i was interested in purchasing the the FRESH AIRE 2 album which i assumed would be in the same vein...what i came across were these youtube videos of shitty commercial classical music which were under the name mannheim steamroller--->
There are some musical groups and/or musicians who are ahead of their time. Chip Davis is a mastermind. On a level with Gershwin, Joplin, Berlin, and many other great American writers. I love Mannheim Steamroller!!
As I'm sitting here listening to this song on June 28th 2010 (for the first time in my life I add) I'm wondering what the time signature is between the beginning and 0:48. It actually took me listening until about 0:58 to get it down to a very allegro 5/8 or an impossibly difficult switch between 4/4 one measure and 10/16 each of the next 3 measures.
@nudist0885 you are correct with 5/8.. but if you are really stoked on the impossible change between quarters and sixteens, then to be precise it must be 12/16's or else you would come up a quarter note short. glad you heard this song.. this too was a childhood relic of mine.
I first heard this on my birthday about 8 years ago. We went into a pine forest for a picnic. There were butterflies and bees - it was magical. Suddenly, out of the pine forest, about 5 cows wandered in and milled around. We sat dumbfounded and enthralled as the music played and the cows stood and seemed transfixed. I remember being overwhelmed with joy - my 47th birthday will always be remembered with this music.
The first time I heard this song was in my freind Heath mini truck back in 1990.He had 16 15's in his Nissan pu.This song sounded great in his truck.LOW LOUD & NASTY that was the name of Heath's truck. This song was used for sound competion.Heath that summer hit 157.3 SPL in his truck
@frank0357 I believe you might be thinking of "Tocatta and Fugue, in D minor" by Don Dorsey from the album Bachbusters. That version had the wicked lows that everyone back in the day was demoing. Don't get me wrong, this version is fantastic but it just does not have the low end like Don Dorsey's version
Youtube is such a resource for hunting down old music. I was prob around 5-8 yrs old when my dad brought home his first Mannheim Steamroller album and blasted it on his huge console JBL's. You can imagine my brothers and I, eyes popping out of our heads as we assured our dad that this was some good stuff!! I grew up thinking the group was called Fresh Air...thanks youtube, now I know their real name. Just bought albums 1-5, & 8 on amazon and can't wait for it to arrive.
@valeskaheq2 i had to laugh when i read this, i was about the same age when my dad bought his hi-fi "Bose" stereo along with this album. I think they were using it as a demo in the store. He played this song so many times it's been burned in my head the past 30 years. When I finally decided to look it up a few years back i too thought the group was called Fresh Air. Took quite a while to track it down, but im glad i did. Sounds as good now as it did back then...
@LocalDogRescue Are you referring to the Acoustimass AM-5, perchance -- one of the very earliest examples of sattelite speakers paired with a subwoofer? (in mainstream use) These were sold at my local Sears store. There was a miniature theater within the store, and a Bose presentation was given about every 30 minutes or so. Outside, they would play the opening to Top Gun, to draw people in and see the sales presentation.
I know last year they opened with Come Home to the Sea, one of my fave pieces of all time, and I couldn't be there. I can only imagine how that sounded live...amazing. =)
The first time I heard this song, I was 5 years old and it rattled around in my head for years until I heard it again in high school and learned about the great Steamroller. Now 30 years later it is still one of my all time favorite instrumental songs. Hear hear for Chip and the Steamroller!

Thank you for posting this!!!
You have no idea what golden memories this cut has for me!
I was at a M/S concert and had a chance to spend some time talking with their manager.
Did you know Chip Davis was an oboe player in High School and that started him on his pursuit of Classical and Renaissance sounds?
And this song is GREAT when played on a blasting high fidelity system. :) People who have never heard it literally stop in their tracks!
