The King Penguin, or "Knight and Colonel Nils Olav" as his title and rank is, is the mascot of the Norwegian Royal Guard! :) He was knighted in the video by Major General Euan Loudon, chief executive and producer of the Edinburgh Tattoo
He is a resident in Edinburgh Zoo and is the third of his kind.
The tradition started in 1962 when the HMKG promoted the first mascot to Lance Corporal and named him their mascot.

I'll get it. You're a touch american soldier! Grown up on masculine movies and videogames. Brainwashed in the army, thrown out in war like the tough and heroic guy you are. A kid there lie dead in the arms of his mother, his entrails lying all over the place. The mother no more have any meaning in life, sitting by the remains of the failed tomahawk missile, looking on the burning oil wells in the distance, thinking about joining that jihad of theirs...
But you don't care, cuss you're in a war and all that matters there is to be tough and masculine! When you finally get home, you will get in debt and loose your house. Eat lots of crappy fast food, watch lots of TV and compensate for your bad living habits by getting addicted to healthcare drugs... hooha!
Hell, not that I would ever long to join HMKG (not that I would manage it), but they are far more disciplined and clear in their minds than those "masculine" grunts of yours.

@bearnar the one starting right after the drill...is not the one you named me..I'm not askink for the mambo song..don't like that...the other one the dramatic one
This is really just a short repertoar of their whole drill. By the way, i was in the Norwegian army for 4,5 years, 2 of which i served with NATO forces. Norwegians ain't at all bad at killing. We just know how to find the right targets, lol. That really goes for all the Scandinavian soldiers. And i will use this oportunity as well to say, we Scandinavians are all one people, we are brothers, and i think from the bottom of my heart Scandinavia could, should, even would have been one country.
somehow nearly all of the scandinavian countries have some sort of relationship to the kingdom of england(King Harald V of Norway is 63rd in line to the british throne)

He got knighted because he is a great hero in Norway! He bravely commanded the polar Penguin force at the battle of Longyearbyen during the invasion of Svalbard! Many brave penguins lost their lives, but his battalion held firmly in place and drove off the evil polar bear marauders! And for these actions he was knighted by the king.
@ThePatrioticPotatos is absolutely right. Our Penguin Assault forces has allways been a part of our first strike weapons. They leed the attack before the main force of White Polar Bear Marines. But our Marines could not get to Longyearbyen in time, so our Penguins had to do the job alone.. :D

Yup :D I'm not in this company though, but in Company 6, the one responsible for training recruits. I love it! :D This company is Company 3, they sure have got skills! :D
I like the band's choice of music, espiecially when they're using bits from Peter Graham's "Windows of the World" and the Red Army's March into Budapest (the one based from Berlioz's Hungarian March).
indeed. the music is always great, wonder how they find it. I'm a big fan of them, but i don't think i shud join the gard. I got a bad leg and all of that.
I know for a fact that Windows of the World is a standard top-level band competition piece, while other pieces are just marches and stuff. The drill team is awesome, but I like the band, since I'm a musician myself (and I lead a marching band as well)
its just hours and hours of drilling and playing the pieces over and over again.. eventually its in your blood.. Its been over a yeat since my time and I still know the music and can walk the drills.. :)
After seeing their performance, I can't disagree! The only thing I think might compete in the US would be the very best of each of our drum & bugle corps. !
Yes I'm also curious to know the name of this first song they march out to. It reminds me of a similar song they played a lot on the Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon and I love the cheery tone of it.
The music that they start playing at 3:24 is preformed really bad. I've heard those pieces of music preformed by average Norwegian amateur brass bands, and they do it much better! I'm ashamed that that's the best musical performance the HMKG band could manage to do, considering the large amount of skilled musicians in Norway. But to be honest it's not about skills, it's about the choice of music. They perform only marches well. Any other type of music they fail to perform any good at all.
Hi ;) If you're referring to the march played at the end, it's called "Gammel Jegermarsj" :) The song sung in the middle of the march is the good old scottish "Bonnie banks of Loch Lomond" :)
Fantastic !!!! Brilliant !!!! it just shows when you put effort into something it turns out brilliant,,, I thought that was something,,, it sent a shiver down my spine, it shows how much skill they have !!! A credit to you and to your country. And did that penguin just get knighted at the end lmao
@Farnylancs Yes, the penguin got knighted by the King of Norway. Olaf (The penguin) is the mascot of the kings guard and has been for thirty years or something like that (a couple of penguins have died along the way)
I'm waiting for them to fire on the queen with real bullets as the queens men did to innocents that wish not be part of her realm.

The HMKG lads are amongst the best in the world. As everything else in Norway.
This might ound a bit silly, but .. when we set our minds to do the best and make the best .. and the government cash out.. we are the best
gulowsen 2 years ago 23
just det
RickyPan1986 2 years ago
btw, the government?
I thought it should be the royal family who cash out...anyways, Norwegians are loaded..
RickyPan1986 2 years ago
After seeing their performance, I can't disagree! The only thing I think might compete in the US would be the very best of each of our drum & bugle corps. !
Loved the medal-wearing penguin !

I went on a holiday for only four days in 2006 and I would agree with you, there is something special about Norway.

misi1979 2 years ago 2
Yes I'm also curious to know the name of this first song they march out to. It reminds me of a similar song they played a lot on the Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon and I love the cheery tone of it.

It's from Norwegian composer Grieg's Peer Gynt suites - This "march" is called "In the Hall of the Mountain king."

It is "In the Hall of the Mountain King" by Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg. Called "Dovregubbens Hall" in Norwegian.

Hva heter march nr 2?? Etter dovregubbens hall?? Den litt Tjekkisk/Russisk preget marsjen
sokki88 3 years ago

There are many good drill platoons out there, but HMKG, aka Garden, is among the best.
spiff1003 3 years ago
HMKG 3'rd company own so bad.
And,sure you who wrote down there USMC Silent Drill Platoon is good, but do they play music and drill at the same time?..
I think it's fantastic that a country with not even 5 mill people can be so good in every thing.
I think Norway is much better then USMC Silent Drill Platoon, sure they are good, but it's not many who are as good as the 3'rd company

Have you heard of the Queen's Colour Squadron of the RAF Regiment? They're similar to the HMKG Drill Team.

TemperaMagenta 3 years ago

What is the name of that Norwegian song on the end of their performance?? I don't understand a word but it sounds awesome!!!
Frrrantic 3 years ago 2
Hi ;) If you're referring to the march played at the end, it's called "Gammel Jegermarsj" :) The song sung in the middle of the march is the good old scottish "Bonnie banks of Loch Lomond" :)

Fantastic !!!! Brilliant !!!! it just shows when you put effort into something it turns out brilliant,,, I thought that was something,,, it sent a shiver down my spine, it shows how much skill they have !!! A credit to you and to your country. And did that penguin just get knighted at the end lmao
Farnylancs 3 years ago 3
Thanks :) And yea, the penguin Nils Olav is now known as Sir Nils Olav :P
bearnar 3 years ago
@Farnylancs Yes, the penguin got knighted by the King of Norway. Olaf (The penguin) is the mascot of the kings guard and has been for thirty years or something like that (a couple of penguins have died along the way)
