MDM sings this beautifully! He sacrifices none of the lyric beauty in this aria and supplies the power and drama needed for a hot headed emotionally overwrought guy like Alvaro. This is one passionate guy Don Alvaro and MDM gives him an edge no other tenor can because they don't have that true Dramatic Tenore power and volume.I love MDM in Verdi operas and think him one of the best Verdians ever.

@orsoghiotto : per conto mio ci sono stati almeno tre tenori che, in quest'opera, viaggiavano di pari passo con Del Monaco : Galliano Masini, Franco Corelli e Giuseppe Giacomini. Questa è una splendida esecuzione, su questo sono pienamente d'accordo con lei, ma dire che tutti gli altri siano " discorsi a ruota libera " mi sembra eccessivo. Saluti.

@mrodicalp : il più grande interprete di sempre di quest'opera si chiamava GALLIANO MASINI ( tenore che, nel corso della sua carriera, ha più volte toccato la PERFEZIONE ASSOLUTA ) ; l'unico che gli si può paragonare, in senso tecnico e vocale, è l'INTRAMONTABILE e DIVINO FRANCO CORELLI. Cito anche GIUSEPPE GIACOMINI, che è riuscito a dar vita in modo STRAORDINARIO a un Alvaro di primissimo livello che, nella storia dell'opera, ha ben pochi rivali. Tanti carissimi saluti.

@federic017 : carissimo amico, sappiamo tutti e due che M. Del Monaco è stato un grandissimo tenore drammatico, su questo non si discute. Per me però Del Monaco non cantava con la giusta tecnica vocale ; la vera tecnica di canto la si può vedere in Pertile, Lauri Volpi, Corelli e, soprattutto, nell'INTRAMONTABILE GALLIANO MASINI. Comunque onore a Del Monaco artisti / cantanti come lui non esistono più : M. Del Monaco = MERAVIGLIA dei tenori drammatici. Tanti carissimi saluti e CIAO !!!

Listen 2how gorgeous he sings the pianissimos(yes plural...more than once!)This performance is untouchable! &, the London Decca studio rec version of this aria is LEGENDARY! No 1, &I mean no1 can match that studio rec! Not Corelli, Bergonzi, Vickers, Baum, Tucker, McCracken(pretty good too!)& di Stefano(comes the closest because of his sweetness similar 2how Del Monaco sings here)But, di Stefano can't deliver the B flats the way Mario does! Very fine and if you compare to Corelli you will hear this was a real dramatic tenor not a spinto singing dramatic roles and for these roles I usually prefer Del Monaco. His Otello I heard in the house in 59, La Scala it was terrific the role fit him like Calaf fits Corelli.

I think this all drmatic-spinto is a funny thing. This is Monaco's far best Forza - beceuse he sings - like a spinto! With many shadows, nive pianos, full of feelings, woith no brutality at all. He always sang great undet the baton of Mitropoulos.
