Well, Rita Diamond can call what Dr. Martin said "possible, partial" answers and explanations, but they're about the best answers and explanations anyone can hope to get.
He promoted his image, sayings and simple sayings of others that reflected his ideas. The idea of establishing a paradise on earth is completely foreign to the bible. His voice was broadcast through a PA 24 hours a day at the camp he created. Like so many tyrants, he had many wives fathered lots of children, may have had sex with children. He was a cult leader/dictator/tyrant/false God. Jim Jones was the polar opposite of Christ.
Jones was not a Christian. Jones stood before his followers and tore up a bible saying that his word was better than Gods. Jones idolized Mao. He died his hair black to look Asian. He named his church The Peoples Temple after the Peoples Republic of China. Jones openly advocated Communism.
Jones wanted people to follow him and his word, not Gods.
@stronglogos You're absolutely right; it is amazing how one person can deceive so many, yet tragically, it's happened more often than we may realize: Joseph Smith, Charles Russell, L. Ron Hubbard, Mary Baker Eddy, the Fox Sisters, Charles and Myrtle Fillmore, Madam Blavatsky, Sun Myung Moon...
What was the name of the group who were lead to believe that a spaceship was comming behind a comet to come take them away, as long as they drank the magic cool aid? The same thing could be said about those poor souls as was just said about the people at Jones Town:(
Great points by Dr. Martin. The people of Guyana wish this would go away...that is the aweful legacy of this demented cult leader.Everyone must read Kingdom of the Cults.GREAT BOOK.
They are lead to believe in "entitlements" and the world owes them a living..then someone like Jim Jones instills loathing for society at large (and paranoia) for his shangri-la!
God and Christ had very little to do with his theology!
